Unusual sprinkler valve problem

Hello,

I've had a "sprinkler valve wont close" problem for years, and have never seen anything here or on google that addresses it. I run my watering sequence and one valve gets stuck on. I've replaced the solenoid and valve several times, it always works (shuts off) for a few days, then stops shutting off. There's never any dirt or grit. The controller has been replaced twice. Swapping solenoid leads, the problem stays with the valve, not the solenoid. Stretching the solenoid spring works for a few days, then it goes back to failing every day. I have varied the tightness of the solenoid fitting to no avail (once the valve fails, it never works correctly until I stretch out the spring).

Any ideas?

I suspect you are not adjusting the flow control knob on the valve. Many valves need the flow control to not be fully open. If on your valve there is a flow control knob open it fully then tighten it down 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 rotations. Run the zone and see if the pressure seems correct. Other than this you could have a bad valve body (but not likely).

Thank you for your reply. The system uses orbit sprinkler valves with no flow control, only a bleed knob. If you suspect a flow control problem, is this another way of saying the pressure is too high?

I have replaced the valve body at least 5 times, so I know its not the valve body (unless you mean valve body design). None of the other valves in the set have this problem.

w Don't know how old your system is or if a contractor installed it and it is under warranty, but here is what I would do assuming it is an old system. 1. Dig out the valve box and find the leaking valve. 2. Replace leaking valve. 3. Deepen the the valve box area and place gravel in the bottom of the valve box equal the original level. 4. Replace all the solenoid connections at the valves with waterproof screw-on connectors. 5. Check connections are solid at controller. 6. If the controller is older than 6 years old, replace the controller. or pay someone to do it. It will be worth the effort or money in the future. JMHO Aloha

ptg, Some additional info needed. The controller is located where? How many zones are hooked up in the controller? Where is the mainline shut-off in relation to the controller? You had a sprinkler contractor out to look at the system and all he could come up with is get a metal detector? If you can't find the valve how do you turn off the zone? Do you know where all the other auto valves are? Pictures would be helpful. Is the water source from the house(hose bib)or from the mainline to the house? These questions are a start. Go USC, You have the proper idea here and you have read the literature. Yes there is a possibility that the high heads could cause siphoning back to the house or street mains. Yes the burst of water is from the anti-siphon working properly. Yes the installer didn't pay much attention to the regulations(not news). Yes there are other types of anti-siphoning valves but most are not as reliable as the anti-siphon valves and hard to verify they are not working. Sometimes local city/county ordinances spell out the requirements for irrigation systems and alternate valve choices and everything else. Yes your yard would be an unusual case(steep grade changes) by having 5 foot high valves but not unheard of. Your situation would also require higher pressure for the system which may or may not be a good thing. A valve that can be utilized in your situation may be small check valves on the lines to the high irrigation heads( leaves water in the lines) and cuts down on head noise at start up. With all that said, I believe (others may disagree)the height of the tee at the bottom of the irrigation head should be below the anti-siphon valve. My A-S valve is about 24" above the ground as it come off my house hose faucet(aesthetically handicapped) and then goes into a auto-valve manifold in a irrigation control box with the lid about 1 inch above the ground. what happens is your trying to move a volume of water at a certain psi through a smaller connection which will lower it's psi thru friction loss but will increase it's velocity thru that same pipe. so what happens is the water hits the fittings or valve at a higher speed causing the hammer to be stronger.

I would suspect the problem is more the quality of the valves than a pressure problem. if your pressure is above 75psi that could be a problem for orbit valves. I would recomend going to a rain bird 75dvf valve which should deal with the trouble.

OK, I've now tried a couple of other valve brands, including a Watermaster with flow control. I get exactly the same result--it works for about 4 cycles, then the spring in the solenoid weakens and the valve no longer shuts off. If I stretch the spring a bit, it starts working again for a few cycles. There are 5 valves, only this one valve always fails after a while. I can swap valves and the problem stays with the line, not the valve. The bad line is the lowest of the sprinkler lines. Could there be a siphoning effect that damages the spring or keeps the valve on even when the solenoid releases?

My belief is it may be a pressure related problem. Are the zones on the same source? What is the pressure and flow rate of your source? You haven't really given a full picture of your system and its idiosyncrasies. Do you have any pressure regulators on your system? Is the source coming from the street pressure or the house pressure after the house regulator? You might think of having a licensed professional irrigation expert check your system out. We are at a disadvantage without physically checking out you system. JMHO. aloha
