Thank you! How far from the corner should I plant it? I am concerned about it getting taller than it is wide (as it appears in the above photo --- beautiful as that is!) and the flowers disappearing into the canopy of the juniper trees. I believe the one we had was shipped as a band. Is that too small to plant out, or does it need to be potted up and grown in a pot for a while? If I could plant it out right away then it certainly wouldn't be hard to dig a small hole for a band. The trick will be protecting it from the crows and critters while still small.

odinthor... ...yes, the water is very much still here, in the Fens where I am... surrounded by rivers, streams, ditches and dykes... and a fair bit of flooding in winter, however further south and east in East Anglia, in the counties of Essex and Suffolk, water is scarcer and it can be quite dry, the driest parts of this country. ...Even here in the northern section with the Fens, we have had little rain this year, except a couple of nights ago when we had electric storms and what seemed like 2 inches of rain in about an hour.... to make up for the 97 degrees we got the other day... this rainfall was manna from heaven for me, as I've been watering my garden with the hose since March... ...obviously, this doesn't compare with drought in other areas but it can be difficult here to get things established.. ..Darlow's Enigma doesn't appeal to me at all as a rose I'd want to grow, but I would also like to know its real name, out of curiosity... ..oh I've just checked on HMF... 'Cascadia' [1922] is thought to be the true identity... Madame d'Arblay x Bloomfield Abundance... that's quite a nice name I think....

Zone 9b, Newhall, CA, mid California desert. Darlow's Enigma grew on the north side of an enormous Mexican Elderberry which I constantly hacked on to keep it from eating the rose beds around it. Darlow's was evergreen and it flowered nearly year round. The most severe year that canyon bottom saw in its 18 years of existence, had a 100 degree temperature range, from 15 F to 115 F. Darlow grew there then and there were never any issues with it. In that position, it never received ANY direct sun, only filtered and reflected sun and light.

I’m curious, though: if picking the right color based on window or light orientation isn’t a sound strategy, why are there so many articles about it? Because it's lucrative. It depends on what you mean by "articles". There are scientific studies and white papers about azimuth, fenestration, cardinal and intermediate geographical directions and how daylight propagates through interior spaces. Also, lots of good stuff about how the eye adapts to light and dark illuminantion. If you're talking about posts on blogs, most of them are garbage. It's a lot of baseless, subjective opinion presented as expertise. Bloggers know they can make up whatever they want about color and no one is going to call them out on the bulls@t they publish - because there aren't that many legit color experts reading the crap they publish to call them out - or care. Most people have not one fat clue how color works but are intrigued, fascinated, sometimes romanced by color. Which makes it a hot topic and how color responds to NSEW light is Google keywords rich. So, whatever "systems" and "rules" bloggers want to make up, and sometimes slap a price tag on, innocent people who don't know any better are willing to gobble it up and adopt their color point of view as if it were gospel without question or vetting. Blogosphere is at best reductive when it comes to how color works and it's the last place anyone should look for information. The damage it's done to color literacy is actually quite sad.
