Craftsman garage door opener problem

I have a 1/2HP craftsman garage door opener (model no. 139.53674SRT1) which has stopped working after our last thunderstorm. My question is: What's the first thing in the opener that gets damaged?

When power is turned on the indicator light on the back of the unit blinks 4 times every 3 or 4 seconds. The indicator lights in the sensors and the standard control console are also ok. When I press the remote or the standard console I hear a click from the opener, but nothing else happens. The light on the opener doesn't work and I don't get the click from the opener when I interupt the "beam" between the sensors.

Because of this I think maybe the circuit board may have to be replaced.

I would appreciate any help I can get here.

The blinking 4 times every 3 or 4 seconds is the code for sensors mis-aligned but that would not cause the symptomes you describe. Is your door stuck in the open position? Check to see if that blinking light is blinking 5 times instead of 4. If not, the most common thing for lightning to get to is the logic board.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I 've disconnected the door so that's not the problem. It seems that the indicator light blinks 5 times every 3-4 seconds, and I hear a click coming from somewhere inside the unit. I've removed the covers from the unit and everything "looks" ok, but I'm no electrician. What do you think? I can probably start by replacing the logic board?

Recently, my door will not stay when down when it is closed. It will go down all the way, then go back up. The only way to keep it closed is to hit the switch just as the door starts back up, then hit it again to close it. This only works if the door is only several inches or so back up when I hit the switch. The problem started a few months ago and happened only occassionally, I think only when it was very cold. Now it happens about every time I close it. I played with the down pressure setting, going from very light to heavy, with no luck. The opener is quite old, it preceded me in the house whihc I bought 16 years ago. But it has worked perfectly until now. I changed springs within the past 5 years. Any idea?

Sounds like a loose connection but this may help. If when closing the door it reverses to the open position and the main light flashes 10 times it is a door sensor problem. Make sure the small light on each sensor is on and not flickering ever so slightly. (check closely) Tweak them a little even though they may seem to be okay. Check for 5vdc between terminals 2 and 3 on the rear of the motor unit. If there is no voltage or if it is greater than 6vdc the logic board is bad.

There are two possibilities. One is that there is a set of switches on the rear of the motor unit and they need to be matched to the remotes. The other possibility is that there is a smart/learn button on the rear of the motor unit. Hold this button in for 6 seconds and it will erase all the codes it has remembered and your remotes will no longer work. After changing the dip switches on the remotes you will need to hold the button down on the remote and then press and immediately release the smart/learn button. This will program it to the new codes of your remotes.

A couple thoughts. This just started happening since you replaced the sprocket? Is it possible the chain is now too tight, or mis-aligned? The sprocket has the same number of teeth? Also, I think many people make the mistake of assuming their opener is defective, when in fact it's the door tracks or springs. With the opener disconnected, does the door open and close easily throughout its range? If not, it could be over-stressing the opener and causing it to stall, regardless of how high the force adjusters are set. David

No logic board yet. I misled you when I asked if your door was stuck in the open position. It is the trolley you need to look at. That is the thing the chain and the door is connected to. If it is jammed against the bolt in front of the motor unit it will cause the symptom you have. If it is, remove the bolt and then operate the door. With the door closed locate the 'up limit' on the side of the motor unit. Using a small screwdriver turn this control about 3 turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the motor cover. This should end your problem. Be sure to replace that bolt.

I should have mentioned in my last follow-up that I have disconnnected the garage door opener completely. It sits on my workbench in the garage and I still get the same result mentioned earlier when I press the remote. This problem occured after a thunderstorm so something inside the unit has suffered some kind of electrical damage. Before the storm everything worked perfectly.

Make sure the sensors are aligned. If they are okay, then disconnect the wires to the sensors and then reconnect them. After a storm, they sometimes need to be reset manually.
