Hard or soft water
Comments (5)Our town has several large well that go thru filters, we have a water softner as its needed for clothes and dishes and stuff as otherwise our water is hard without it. Currently im useing that same water to water my indoor fig plants and there ok for now and also drink it. When spring comes i use the hose which has the unsoften water and thats for the large potted fig tree's but i also collect rain water when it rains and use that as well during the growing season outdoors. As Gorgi says i drink from faucet as well, its been said that the bottle stuff has all the garbage as well but thats another story . Martin...See MoreR/O system. Do I plumb w/ hard or soft water?
Comments (4)Yur choices are either have your membrane try to remove calcium carbonate or sodium. Calcium is know as a hydrophobic element and sodium is a hydrophillic element. What this means the water loves sodium and hate calcium. Membranes will rid the deposits of sodium very easily and calcium will adhere and soon the membrane is shot. Inn fact we get the word calcification from this process. The prefilter will suffer but not as much. Certainly, if you remove the calcium and iron, the whole system will benefit. Membranes will start to be damaged in as little as 5 gpg in a relatively short time. Are you connecting the RO to the ice maker? Good idea if you can. Comments (16)I love my RO filter. Most of my out of town relatives who've come to visit have commented on how they like my water, not knowing it was filtered. One small additional benefit with a softener + RO combination is that the RO membrane will last a bit longer than if you feed it "regular" water. My RO is plumbed to the fridge so it can feed the icemaker + water dispenser, and I have a separate spigot at my prep sink. It sounds like you're already doing it, but you'll want to be sure that you run RO water through plastic tubing, not directly in copper pipes. The plastic tubing is normally run inside the copper pipe. Be aware that the RO filter removes fluoride, so if you have kids you might want to talk to your dentist about it. A fluoride toothpaste and fresh fruit should be plenty of fluoride, but talk to your dentist....See MoreHow do I turn off the water to my ice maker?
Comments (1)Re turning off water to the sink....that should not be a concern. The concern would be a free supply line. Often, technicians will turn off all water, not wanting to risk the homeowner knows how to shut off different supplies....See MoreThe_Mohave__Kid
