clean outside gutters
Comments (1)We have cream colored gutters which show a lot of dirt and we have found that Clorox Cleanup works great. Or you could probably just use a bleach/water mixture in a sprayer if you need to get up high....See MoreCleaning gutters from ground
Comments (8)My hate-heights husband is phobic about clean gutters. Since we do not have a very steep hipped roof, the fastest and easiest method for us is me on the roof with a leaf-blower clearing the gutters as I walk near the edge....takes 10 minutes max which includes ladder placement, climbing, and hoisting cords/blower. If my husband's male vanity reigns supreme...30-45 minutes with me worrying that he is going to tumble off at any moment...his reaction to being on the roof makes me a nervous wreck! I would hate cleaning the gutters from below...way too messy for me...runny mud and decaying crud in the face...yuck! If being on the ground or on a ladder were my only option, I would definitely do a section of the gutters with inexpensive gutter guards to see how we'll they worked before investing all the effort to do the entire gutter system....See MoreThe best way to clean the grime off the outside of our gutters
Comments (2)There are all kinds of things you can use. A trip to your local True Value or ACE Hardware store will have everything from plastic scoops (designed for gutters) to remove debris, and you'll need a bucket to hold the "muck" while you clean it out of the gutters. A second person to dump the bucket is a good idea, in which case it's nice to have more than one 5-gallon bucket. There are stiff brushes the size/shape of gutters to hand-clean them. I can also suggest the cleaners in a bottle you attach to a garden hose and apply to the gutters once the debris has been removed. The trick is to apply it and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to have time to "work", and THEN wash it down with a hose. A power washer is going to work, too, but in my experience work best with two people and you BOTH have to wear a rain suit to keep from getting drenched with any project I've been part of with a power washer. The bottle of cleaner attached to the garden hose can also get messy, but easier to use than a power washer, in my experience. Once again, using this method it's nice to have two people. One on the ground to move the garden hose. The key to success is doing the removal more often and before it gets wet from a rain storm. We would blow the leaves out with a small electric leaf blower (they include attachments now so you can do a single-story home from the ground), and now we have a light-weight battery-powered leaf blower that would have been nice because it would have eliminated the electric cord. I would do our home myself with the leaf blower while walking on our roof, rather than perched on the ladder, and it would only take about 10-minutes because I could get to the entire roof without having to move the ladder every few feet. I would blow out the gutters several times a week and ALWAYS just before a rain. I would also say one of the best things we did when we moved into our current home 10-years ago was to have aluminum gutter-covers attached to our gutters. We NEVER have to clean gutters anymore - WOO HOO! We do check them a couple times a year for any problems, but have never had any debris/clogs after 10-years. So once you get them thoroughly cleaned, give yourselves an early Christmas gift and have gutter-covers put on. -Grainlady...See MorePaint gutters or have them professionally cleaned?
Comments (1)Gutters should be cleaned at the time of cleaning for painting. if gutters are prepped correctly paint will not chip or peel. if the gutters clean up well no need to paint them...See More- 17 years ago
