Should I remove tree?

We have a very (3 + story) pear tree living between my house and my neighbors. I am currently looking to do some yard renovations, and am strongly considering removing the tree. During strong storms we have lost a few large branches onto the neighbors roof. I am worried about the tree breaking at some point and causing significant damage. Also I am looking at having sprinklers installed and this may be a difficult prospect with such a large tree in the mix. Finally I have a few foundation concerns for both me and the neighbors.

On that same note, this is Texas and I hate removing a large healthy tree. It does provide some shade during the middle of the day (then again its hard to get anything to grow near it).

So do I remove the tree?

nothing good to say about the type of tree.. its location.. nor its future.

you are really stretching it.. to suggest it shades that 8 feet between the two house.. lol ...

Thomis, P.serotina is the preferred food for Eastern Tent Caterpillars - but they do get on other species - I noticed several 'tents' in apple trees in my orchard earlier this week. Manual removal is about as effective as anything I've tried. Google up ETCs, and there should be plenty of info on control measures to attempt. They rarely cause any long-term damage. P.serotina is in full bloom here now - I'm seeing trees with tents & flower clusters. So...I'm presuming either yours are still too young - though I see trees less than 10 ft tall blooming - or you've just not noticed them in bloom.

Looks pretty good to me. No dead or brown edges on the leaves. I'd say keep doing what you're doing. It's still adjusting to the outdoor environment. If you are expecting the branches to suddenly pop upright it's not going to happen. They got long and lanky inside without enough light. You'll either need to support them upright, prune back and wait for upright growth, or live with what you have. If left like they are you will get upright growth from the highest buds on the current limbs or other buds maybe on the trunk. Form can be improved later down the road. Post back if you have more questions after it starts growing again. Give the tree as much light as possible.

i know dave.. in the conifer forum has dealt with these.. because i noted i liked his recycled use of the boxes ... in other words.. he did not destroy them .... i am not sure.. he visits the tree forum i would not plant a conifer in august.. in MI ... i would place it.. box and all in shade.. until mid to late fall.. when nights are reliable cool ... and days more temperate ... all you need is a couple hundred degree days after planting ken

I don't see many species trees that winter burn up here. It's the cultivars that have the most trouble. But yes, combination of frozen ground, windy, sunny locations and repetitious -25 d temps for a good part of the season get hit the hardest. As long as the buds are alive and how much of the total tree is burned, they usually will make a comeback. I've seen much worse than yours. Some winters are just worse than others. Remove it before it falls on something. These trees were an unfortunate fad. More and more cities have removed them from their lists.

Another vote for remove. And make sure you get someone with good expertise in removing trees from tight places - and check they've got full insurance, too.

'Fraid it'll be an expensive job.

Thanks for all of the advice, it helped me make my decision.
Fortunately, we have a large oak in the back and another large tree in the front.

Wow, which cultivar is that? Never seen a tall one like that.

I agree with others, Cut it down before it splits in half and cause damage to the house.

Who in their right mind would have put that tree there?

Cut it down!

If you have a saw and are handy you could take it down pretty easily from the top to the bottom piece by piece.

Wow! Now that's a 'timber-type' pear!
Boy, if there was an instrument-maker or wood-worker in the neighborhood, and you could have that sucker sawninto veneer-quality lumber, it'd possibly be worth something - but most timber-cutters wouldn't want to come within 20 miles of trying to extract that sucker from that spot.
Looks like a job for an accomplished, bonded/insured arbor service - not just cuz'n Bubba with a chainsaw.

I appreciate all the feedback!

We toasted the tree, and had it chopped down.

We miss the shade it gave some parts of the house, but will now have less to worry about, and some sunnier spots for a garden.
