Upgrading sprayer: recommendations

I think that I have outgrown my $10 1-gallon sprayer. I probably only need a 2 gallon for now but what brand would you recommend, I want to make the task as easy as possible.

If you could afford it one of those Black and Decker(there are other brands too) battery operated, on rollers sprayers would be nice. It's such an unpleasant task making it easier is a great idea. There is also a sprayer that gets charged by rolling but it isn't very long living. There are backpack sprayers that have an arm that you pump them up with but it's so hard on your back.

The B&D I have is only one gallon, but it's really nice & easy to use. Wasn't too expensive, either. It makes the job much more pleasant (and fast).

Unless you purchase a sprayer with a motor driven pump you will need to pump any sprayer you do buy since to get the material you mix in that sprayer you need to pressurize it and mechanical pumping is the only other option. There may be larger sprayers out there that could be pressurized by an air compressor but then due caution would be needed so you did not over pressurize it.

Okay, gang, for those who are interested... here's the upshot on how the modifications on the Mantis Sprayer worked this weekend. First off, RJ corrected what I previously wrote - it was a motorcycle battery (not a bicycle battery) that he put on the Mantis. It is a Yuasa battery sold by Honda as # YTZ14S, their heaviest duty motorcycle battery. It worked FANTASTIC!!!! Instead of taking 2 1/2 to 3 hours to spray the garden, I was finished in less than 1 and 1/2 hours (including mixing, cleaning up and putting away stuff). The only possible downside is that it sprays so vigorously that I needed to use an extra 3 gallons of spray mixture. So I had to go back and mix up another 3 gallons. But I got great coverage, and it still brought me in at 1 hour & a half including the remixing and reloading. The new hose was also a joy. I could walk 4 times as far with the expandable capacity, without dragging around an overly long hose. And when I store it, I don't have to wrap and wrap and wrap the hose around the handle. It collapses down to a nice neat circle on top of the sprayer. This has really made my week - heck, it's made my season to have a sprayer that works so effectively. RJ has earned a really big hug!

Which Graco sprayer would you recommend?

Just my 2 cents Personally, I have three sprayers. A cheap(ish) Graco airless sprayer, a Titan air assisted airless sprayer, and a Fujispray HVLP. ---- Paint sprayers are all about atomization of the paint. Airless sprayers basically use high pressure to bounce the paint off the surface. Air assisted and HVLP both use air to help atomize the paint. ---- If you are putting a lot of paint on the wall then an airless sprayer is pretty incredible. We use the cheap(ish) Graco to paint rental units fast. For wood projects I use either the air assisted airless or the HVLP. I get a better finish with the HVLP, it is a lot more user friendly and they are much cheaper to get into. However, you are not going to be spraying latex paint with an HVLP gun. I have a 5 stage motor in mine and I still can't spray a thick latex paint. So that means thinning the paint quite a bit and spraying more coats. The best answer for what you are wanting is an air assisted airless that you can turn off the pump and turn it into a true airless (Graco 595) but something like that will cost you a very pretty penny. --- If you are going to go with an airless because it can paint everything the tip (and maybe the mix) is imperative. Use the product sheets to find the recommended tip and then try it for a bit. Use a resource like youtube to make sure you understand what your spray pattern should look like before you start spraying wood (paint a lot of cardboard). If your putting too much paint on the edges things are going to go south. If you are going to go with an HVLP because you can't mess it up, get used to 20%-30% dilutions for latex paint and lots of refills. If you are going to go with an air assisted airless get used to 10%-20% dilutions for latex paint but few refills (or spend a ton of money). Best of luck

I would get a 2 gallon sprayer from True Value. It has a large opening at the neck so you don't spill chemicals when you add them to the sprayer.

I love my new Black & Decker sprayer! It is the one gallon model. Even though I have to fill it more often it is a pleasure to use. I can't believe I suffered as long as I did using one of those cheap one gallon sprayers.

I think it could be rigged onto a bigger bottle without much trouble. :-) A 3 or 5 gallon on a handtruck would work really well.

And can tell you what NOT to buy. I have a Sears model that leaked from the day I bought it. It leaks chemicals all over my hands as I spray. I should have taken it back...

The EZ sprayer is really nice. It has a rechargeable battery, 4 gallon capacity, several different kinds of nozzles. Overall very pleased with it. You can often find it at hydroponics stores and places like that for less.

I use a 2-gal. pump sprayer for the smaller jobs but have a 4-gal backpack for the big jobs like when spraying for BS and PM.
The only thing is four gallons of any liquid is heavy no matter how you transport it and the 4-gal is very difficult to get on your back without some help. Also having to pump that lever all the time while spraying gets pretty tiring and annoying really quick.
I am going to look into the automatic sprayer on wheels hopefully with a 4-gal capacity.
