Have it ID but a reputable agency first. Some how that doesn't look like the witches broom I've seen. The foliage is to far apart and open. The witches broom I've seen is very dense growth.

Seil, thank you for your suggestion. I will take a piece of that suspicious growth and let the extension office do the verdict.
I lost so many roses to RRD last summer, it's just heartbreaking.

The stem seems too elongated for RRD. I would suspect roundup contamination first. But take a sample to your local ag agent.

Amanda, yes, I forgot to mention, I never used Roundup anywhere there. So, Roundup damage version is not a possibility. Unfortunately.

That looks like herbicide damage. Try cutting it back and see what happens. I have exactly the same on one of my roses where I sprayed RoundUP near recently.

I haven't seen RRD on Baltimore Belle, but this doesn't look like RRD to me. Herbicide damage doesn't have to be from Round Up ... it can be lawn weed killer, or some other sort of herbicide. If this were mine, I would cut the offending cane off at the ground, along with any that adjoin it, and I would wait and see.

I'm sorry to hear that your beautiful garden has had RRD come to it. I see so much RRD on the roadside roses wherever I go, and I watch my own garden very closely. I removed a suspicious cane from Miriam's Pink Powerpuff earlier this spring.

When Robert and I visited you last spring, we said that we would get together more often, but we never did. I really enjoy your company, so let's see what we can do to see each other more often this year, okay?

I think I can cut the canes to down below, no problem. My only concern is that 'Baltimore Belle' is growing right next to my two 'Eden' roses that succumbed to RRD last summer. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Connie, BTW, your cuttings of 'Pink Surprise' all took roots, I now have three beautiful young plants. I hope they will be as happy here as they are in your garden. Outstanding rose, as I remember it.

I had a two-year battle with a fungal cane dieback disease in my roses. Whenever the roses infected with this disease threw new canes or new growth on existing canes, it looked exactly like your pictures. Most of my roses recovered from the fungal disease, so I hope that's all you have on your rose. FYI, the disease in my roses started with all of the new growth and buds wilting down and eventually turning brown and dying and then they started throwing the weird new growth.

I question the advice to show it to your local ag agent. I "suspect" that he/she may be well trained in crop information but I would also "suspect" that he/she may know very little about RRD and its affect on roses.

The State of Virginia has a good corps of workers who interface with the guys at Virginia Tech who have been working on RRD diagnoses for about a decade. Marina can trust them.

I wonder if there is something in the soil from building the house. Esp if this rose is right next to a site where there was a problem.

Corners are bad....when it comes to spreading RRD. It's a place where wind borne mites get dropped when the wind speed drops as it hits the corner at any potential angle.

Two things I'd do for that rose: Take a sharp shovel blade and cut into the ground around it, to stop any root-to-root potential transmission. I'd then cut back those canes; there's something wrong with them and they aren't going to make good blooms this year, anyway. THEN watch what comes back from the roots. What you would have done is either purge a bunch of toxins from the bulk of the rose or given it a reason to grow out of this, or you will see the new growth come back even worse.

It doesn't look like RRD. I would follow Ann's advice.

Sometimes in the spring a cane is sort of half dead and can only push leaves out part way. This is what the canes look like to me.

I've had RRD on about 10 roses. Some of them had obvious symptoms on a single cane. I cut below the symptoms and the roses have been fine ever since. Sometimes a rose can get RRD and still look great for several years before needing to be disposed of. Just trim off the bad spots as they appear.

RRD is bad, but it's not the end of the world. If you keep an eye on it and cut out the infections, you can keep it under control. It takes a long time for an initial infection to overwhelm a plant.

A week ago I found a seriously infected cane amongst a group of 6 double knockouts. I just cut out the bad part and threw it in the woods. This is what I always do. I'm surrounded by infected multiflora rose so rrd is a part of growing roses for me. When my roses get RRD, I don't have to post pictures, it's grotesquely obvious. Not like your pictures.

Dark Lady, you may not have used any RoundUp but possibly a neighbor has. The spray can drift a long way on any breeze. I had a neighbor spray his hedge for poison ivy and it affected my rose bed 40 feet away. Like you, my first thought was RRD but with further investigation I discovered what happened.

Ah yikes! This is the first I've heard of Rose Rosette. I need to visit the Rose forum more often. I hope it doesn't come to Florida. I never thought I'd been happy that our climate is so hostile to wild rose populations.

There's a reasonable chance that you're wrong.

I've seen this same stuff too here, not nearly so much as what you were looking at, but to a noticeable extent on a very young rose that was clearly suffering, suffering. The rose here was planted in the ground on the north side of our house but very near a pot ghetto yard area that RRD had spread like wildfire through, so I kind of gave it a second thought at the time I started wondering what to do about the rose. But none of the roses I ended up throwing out due to RRD looked like this rose, and the fact that the rose has grown and looks completely normal now (though still small and somewhat leggy) convinces me that this rose totally escaped RRD. The rose, Little White Pet, did have a few black canes that I cut out. We then moved the rose to a much sunnier spot about a month ago. It's doing much better now, and looks as if it might be the rose we were hoping for.

If your spot already has plenty of sun (looks as if it does, going by the heavy, beautiful blooming shown in a previous year), maybe think about assuming a fungus problem and do whatever you might do for that, including, perhaps, pulling the rose a little farther out from the wall to get more air circulating. We didn't do anything other than to cut out the black canes and move the rose to a sunnier spot and it appears to have worked.

This spring plants of Georgetown Tea in 2 different gardens about 10 miles apart (!) both have spindly new growth, undersized and sparse foliage and the first flowers were poor quality.
Meanwhile Monsieur Tillier, Lady H. & other teas are just fine.
This has been a big spring for mildew so I'm guessing Georgetown Tea just doesn't like the weather. Too bad since it is a gorgeous color & when it's good it's very good!
Interesting that the growth I'm seeing is so much like that photo...

I have a Belinda's Dream that did that type of weird growth on two canes last year. I took them off and the plant has been fine. I have 7 of them growing as a hedge against the building. The canes in question were right at the corner, near the AC which puts out heat from the back and I always assumed that caused this weird growth. Like I said though, I pruned them back and its growing fine now months later.
