Transplanting and Replanting Crabapples

Five years ago, we put in two small crabapple trees in our backyard. They are doing wonderfully, but we are having a basement dug for a bedroom addition and are having some of the dirt transplanted to that part of the lawn. The area really needs to be regraded, but I hate the thought of losing the trees. Is there any way that we could dig them up and place them somewhere for a week or two and then replant them in the same places again? Would they survive? Any tips on how to do this would be much appreciated.

There are five years old and we are in zone 6a. They would most likely need to be moved in April or May.

It would be best if you do the moving while they are dormant. They should be waking up very soon with this mild weather. I know my crabapples are pushing new growth already here and little north of me. If the basement is for safety purposes (tornado shelter) that takes priority for me. I would then have to transplant them now. I would not wait until April. If the project can be put off until they are dormant this fall, since you like them so much, I'd do that ideally. Remember, small crabapples are pretty inexpensive, you could just start over. But transplanting in the growing season is not a death sentence, just a lot of work keeping them alive and disease free in the harshest time of year (summer) with a massively reduced root system.

Yes, if you can physically do it, or if you can afford to have equipment brought it, it certainly can be done. With the right equipment, fully mature trees can be moved.

April or May, though -- no, sorry, it needs to be done while dormant. Which, with the kind of weather in your neck of the woods, is NOW. Before the buds break and grow, at least. The sooner the better.

Dave and Allison, Thank you both for the answers. Dave, I especially liked the photos in the tomato section you linked for me. Now I see what Allison means about "you'll know true leaves when you see them." I love learning all of this but I feel really dumb because I jumped in with both feet and I already see that I've made a LOT of mistakes. For example, I may have started my seeds too early. I also used the wrong soil...I used regular potting soil WITH FERTILIZER built right in. So, I really messed that up. I wonder if it's just a matter of time before I watch my precious seedlings fail. I'll be so sad about the time and the money. I spent about $100 on all my supplies, with about $80 on seeds. I have three large flower garden areas to decorate and each year, I spend a lot of money buying flowers from a nursery. I thought this would be a better way to do it. I have a small vegetable garden which is in its fourth year. I've had varying success with either buying plants or sowing directly in the soil. Last year I totally ruined the garden through a variety of mistakes. I'm still learning but it's getting old. I wish I'd found this forum 2 months ago! Are my mistakes with the soil going to make me very sad? I have planted many flower seeds-- zinnias, marigolds, gazanias (which I'd never heard of but I liked the picture in the seed catalog!) I have two types of tomoatoes started and some watermelon. I plan to sow many others in another week or so...I plotted out a schedule based on the days to germination and days to maturity listed on the seed packets. I would be more inclined to ammend the top of the soil, perhaps scratching it in some just outside the drip line. Inside the drip line I would be afraid of damaging feeder roots by scratching around, so be careful there. If you cover it with some pine bark the worms will come up and pull the compost under for you. It does take some time, so be patient. I would also use an organic based fertilizer such as Mills Magic Mix, or Purely Organic (very silmilar to Mills, but much less expensive). Rose Tone is also good, and can be used in combination. You may also want to use a liquid fertilizer (I like the Mills Easy Feed) every couple of weeks or so, to give them a boost until the organics kick in. Water well both before and after feeding. If you aren't doing so already, irrigating the roses on a regular basis would help also. You would have to judge how much by the drainage you have in your soil....yours is much different than what I deal with. As a rule, most roses do not like to be disturbed, and I would move them only if they looked like you would lose them otherwise. Sandy

It is possible that it's just taking some time to recover from whatever transplant shock it experienced last season. It is also possible that whatever fertilizer was applied last fall and this spring encouraged foliage at the expense of flowers. Just make sure it gets enough water this summer otherwise, let it be. No more fertilizer. You never want to fertilize a stressed plant or one that recently planted and truthfully, trees in the landscape seldom need to be fertilized anyway. Certainly not twice within a single 12 month span!

I need to transplant my gladiator crabapple (to the left of the arbor) that was planted last summer as I have built an arbor and now the tree is too close. The tree gets sun after 11:30 am in the summer but because of the fence/2-story houses) the lower portion of the tree is shaded most of the time. Since my yard is so tiny I only have two spots the tree can go. Both spots have their problems. 1) I can move the tree over 6 feet to the left from where it is now. It will still get sun but have some slight shading especially later in the season as the sun goes lower in the sky. The area is also quite moist as my yard drains that direction. The soil is heavy clay which I plant to amend the whole bed next spring. I also plan to plant the tree in a slightly raised mound to aid in drainage. 2) I can move the tree closer to the deck but it will be shaded until 12:00 pm and the area also receives some of my drainage water. There is landscape fabric and rock under the deck and my patio has compacted road crush under it. It seems neither spot would be ideal for this tree but I already have it and it needs to be moved. Where do you think would be best for the tree? Please excuse my messy yard!

Thanks for the quick responses! I'm not worried about the cost of buying new trees. It's more the time we will lose planting new ones. They are also so lovely and clearly love the locations in the yard where they are currently. Since it is almost 70 degrees outside today, everything is already budding. We already have daffodils blooming. I really don't have another place to put them permanently in the yard, as it is pretty small. So regardless they would have to sit for a few weeks. How do you even do that? Do you wrap them in burlap and keep them upright?

I guess I'll take my chances with transplanting them later. And if they die, I'll plant new in the fall or next spring.

see if the guy with the backhoe.. who is going to dig the basement.. cant do it for you ... just place them somewhere else ...

age of the tree is irrelevant.. perhaps if you told us how big it is.. that might be a bit more helpful ...

and is there anything precious about these ????

in my world.. the reasonableness of the project is compared to cost of replacement.. and if i could mail order two replacements for $20 .. i surely would not spend $500 to move them ...

focus on the project.. the addition ... deal with the garden after ... if they must be sacrificed.. so be it ...
