where to find an Edith Bogue Southern Magnolia

Does anyone know any nurseries that sell Edith Bogue Southern Magnolias? I've heard that they can grow up around Chicago where I live and I was hoping to try and grow one.

There are many mail-order nurseries that sell this cultivar. Here are a few:

ForestFarm (excellent Garden Watchdog rating) http://www.forestfarm.com/

You might even check with a premium nursery in your area to see if they could get you one locally (maybe iffy in your area).

Not sure about which nursery, but where I live in the South, there are many Southern Magnolias around. Just be aware that evergreens like the SM have the toughest time in heavy snow with limb breakage. The wide, pyramidal growth pattern of the magnolia would make it even a bit more so.

However, it can stand snow and is a beautiful tree when established. Good luck and I hope you find a good one!

Yes, the one variety is more striking than the other. 'Edith Bogue' was selected for hardiness only and does not have a particularly outstanding appearance, as far as the species goes. Many seedlings sold here less ornamental, but many named cultivars more impressive visually.

Where did you get it from? I'm in SW Pa and there are not many nurseries here other than big box stores that sell trees. Anyway, I have a plain southern mag (evergreen) that remained evergreen last winter, I would'nt worry about one that is said to be more cold hardy than the plain evergreen Magnolia Grandifolia. As far as staking I would stake high and give it room to move back and forth a bit. Using 2 stakes and a loose rope/string.

some lady from a garden center is to come look at the dead river birch that shouldn't have died in 3 weeks, too bad yesterday it was trashed, it had no roots..she was to come 2 days back and didn't, I dont hold breath.. ISsue with magnolia, I had the soil too boggy, the issue is sometime more recently she started losing all her bright right top feeder roots, lower down, they are not white, perhaps they aren't meant to be.. I planted her shallowly as the nursery had her, but even now I see 99% of time, what's in a pot is still too deep..the base, I'm trying to realize the "flare" is a big different... I'm just watching... it's one of my last trees, ya know...I would buy small but have had too much bad luck online places (plus shipping).. but now due to difficulty with strength .. they don't like to sell small.. I don't have the money Ken, I'm obsessed as it's my outlet for dealing with the rest of my out-of-control.. and I used to have a gorgeous yard... and i'm an outside freak, can't be in... always was like that..I've been careless, too much, thinking.. not thinking clearly.. Sorry if I wasn't clear, but all your answers helped a lot, thanks for taking the time..you are very kind! Oh, everyone tells me magnolias don't like clay...but oh well, I can't move another thing to a pot... I've no ... I hate life sometimes, it comes at you and never seems to give you a break.. Art in Nature, What I found with the strong vertical growers, where the branches attach to the trunk with very small angles, was that the snow would just accumulate in the the crotch (ha ha, not a botanical term, I'm sure), until the whole branch would fall down. Broad-branching ones would just lower their branches until the melting would begin, and they would magically rise up, with NO DAMAGE. I do have a Majestic Beauty, and this one is not only broad-spreading, it is also wide-leaved. But still was good with snow. I gotta say, I think I prefer the form of both E.B. and the Victoria, Majestic Beauty leaves, I find M.B. a bit coarse, but flowers are definitely HUGE. D.D. Blanchard is such a nice, cold-hardy one, but I rarely have seen it sold around me (NJ/Zone 7a/b) , not that there is any more room anyway. Little Gems are nice but more inclined to cold damage, and growth is much more restrained. I once had a cultivar known as Green Giant, that one was fast-growing, had 0 indumentum. That one was eventually removed, it had very poor tolerance to any snow loads, and its lime green leaves burned in winter sun and cold.

one indication that what you read is NOT correct.. might be the fact that no local nursery carries them ... dont you think ... not much help??? ... lol ...

southern mail order suppliers make all kinds of ALLEGED zone claims .... that may or not hold true in the great white north ... there is THEORY.. and then there is reality ...

in reality .. it will .. most likely ... all depend on your little micro climate ... and it seems you know this.. when you say you want to 'TRY' ....

have you ever seen one locally????

you might try contacting The Chicago Botanic Garden and seeing what their thoughts are in this regard ....

i am also aware that Hidden Lakes Gardens in Tipton MI [just SW of ann arbor] has a magnolia collection .... see link .... you might want to contact them as they should be close in zone to you ... and see if they have any southern magnolia ....

Not the most visually interesting of the more hardy M. grandiflora selections, and not the most hardy either. And I have had one come apart under wet snow in USDA 8.

There have been prior thread(s) on this site, where better choices have been mentioned. Maybe searching GW will bring one up.

Thanks everyone for your input. Growing a Southern Magnolia around Chicago is a bit of a stretch, especially this winter where Chicago has only seen three days reach 40 for a high since December 1st and today was the first below zero moring of the winter (-4). I've read on this forum that they have been seen around the Chicagoland Area, and are supposed to be common around the Detroit Area, including a 40 foot specimen near downtown Mt. Clemens, MI. Ken you might want to chime in on whether you think this is true since you live in Michigan.

Although the only one I've seen closest to Chicago was in Springfield, IL. It was growing in the backyard of a residence and was 30 feet tall and looked very healthy. Springfield is probably 2-3 degrees on average warmer than Chicago.

I don't know how 'Edith Bogue' would hold up to snow or even how well it will do in Chicago, but I do know it can withstand pretty low temperatures. I've seen verified reports of it surviving temperatures around -20 degrees F (and at least one reliable report of it surviving -22 degrees F). Chicago is now in zone 6 in newer hardiness zone schemes, so temperature extremes are not likely to be a problem. 'Edith Bogue' may not be THE most hardy cultivar, but it is definitely among the most hardy.
