Help Identifing Garden Way Tiller

I recently acquired an old Garden Way tiller and have been trying to determine exactly what I have and find documentation for it. There are various numbers, machine stamped, on the tiller of the format TH-nnnn. I was able to find what appears to be a hand stamped serial number on the top right side of the transmission case -- 497107. It has a 8hp B&S engine that appears to be original. From what I have read, I believe this is Troy Bilt Horse tiller. But what model is it -- I, II, III, IV, etc.? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks -- TPW

It's a "Horse" model....the smaller models wer "Pony' and "Junior".....if yours works properly....you have a very nice unit .....I worked for Gardenway in the mid 80's...I tuned up more "Horses" than I care to remember ....Good Luck Jim

BTW if you go to the MTD website you should be able to find manuals for your TB,,,as MTD now owns them...

Thanks Jim! It seems to be a solid unit. Do you know how I can determine if this "Horse" is a I, II, III or IV? Or, does it matter? The reason I ask is for ordering parts. I noticed there were difference parts lists and I don't want to order parts from one list and find out I ordered from the wrong list.

Have troy built pony from 78 to 81 era. The motor been replace by Honda ge 160. The transmission pulley is sloppy the bolt is tight. You can move it around by hand. What is missing? A key , bearing? Serial number 118349 stamp on transmission frame. Other numbers 20512CT. 8F2 24/82. Tring to find Manuel and parts list.

Its troy bilt pony tiller. If get number off transmission case top right even where transmission case cover mounts there machine off place serial take wire brush clean so see stamp numbers 6 are more numbers. The H50 means 5 horsepower engine with engine number Jackssmallengine may help with parts but that engine no longer made.

Because your tiller is PTO model and electric start it would been in 1980's you need to join yahoo troybilt tiller group Bill Roger owner of group has dealer ship and can supply all info you need site has photo and files on tiller. I have 5 old troybilt tillers. Your serial number tell more about tiller number on transmission case above right tire (not cover).

the ones I tuned were ones...then the two's came out with a PTO to disengage the tines ...(as reverse sometimes tickled your toes....) as for 3's and 4's ,I can't say I know the difference ....Sorry Jim

BTW if you do not have a PTO handle to engage the tines ,I believe it's a "One"....
