Forum Debate: Encore Azaleas vs. Knockout Roses
Comments (4)FWIW I don't think every azalea actually needs shade north of the DC suburbs, I have a couple in full sun, but the only place all of the Encores are hardy is well south of there. I'm still rather irritated I paid top dollar for one of them from a fancy Baltimore area nursery - one of my few purchases of trees or shrubs from a non-specialist, local nursery - only to have it die at a very high winter temp, around 10F. Most of them should never have been rated zn 7 hardy, the species they used to get the late blooming was a very tender SE Asian one. It was the orange one...some of the pink ones might be a bit hardier but I know I've read other accounts on the web of their hardiness having been overstated during the initial launch. Remember all knockout roses in the eastern US, at least, will probably eventually die of RRD....See MoreSimplicity vs Knockout
Comments (18)I had the sunny and the red knockout but they both died on me due to where they were planted in the garden. What happened was the black rubber pipe they had sim to the eaves trough had it placed so that whenever it rained really hard it would come down off the roof and into not only the ditch but into the garden and flood part of it out as it was like a moat. I wasn't aware of it at the time doing this and due to the constant freezing and thawing as well the roses eventually died on me. The first knockout I got was in this one garden but the sawfly larvae that was on the mini rose came over on to mine and did a number on it. Soooo moved it to the other garden was doing ok but then once the hostas got going and nobody actually looked after the garden letting them go wild they were overshadowing it. Move hah #3. Phoned my garden center where I got it from asked if it was okay to move it for a 3rd time and they assured me it was and just after I do to give it this quick start once every week for the next 3 weeks to help with the transplanting of it. And it has been there ever since. The tenacious rose proved to me it was going to pull through no matter what. And despite the size of it got a bloom or two on it!!! Never got around to covering any of them up last year. And it still survived. You should see it now!!!! Wow!!! Has gotten higher and has developed 4 buds on it. One of them has opened up today on it. Seems to like it there....See MoreKnockout, Flower Carpet, or Easy Elegance?
Comments (8)I know a lot of people love KO, but where I live they are so ubiquitous I'm tired of them! My limited experience: I had one pink Flower Carpet, for me I was not impressed - it grew well enough, but only seemed to have one flush and then I read these roses are closely bred to rugosas, so you may not see continuous flowering as claimed. Eventually got SP'd was fed up with the thorny flowerless weediness. Easy Elegance: I was just admiring my bursting with growth own-root (from Home Depot 2 years ago) Macy's Pride and Funny Face Easy Elegance roses this morning. (Maybe all EEs are own-root). I treated these terribly the first year, left them in the original pots, they were down to a few spindly shoots. Now planted in baking sun front yard in not the greatest soil (though they did get fertilized) and they have really bushed out and shot up, with multiple buds. I do have some light black spot low down but then stupidly planted them (3) too close together, I will fix that next year. Based on this small experience I would buy more Easy Elegance tomorrow, if I could. PS. My front soil is horrible rocky clay that was amended a bit with organics, nevertheless the roses are happily sharing space with a Japanese spirea and some other shrubs. Easy care bushes!...See MoreCarefree vs Knock outs? Carpet rose question
Comments (2)I am not sure the question? Are you asking if the carpet roses are as good as Knockout? Or are you asking is Carefree Sunshine as good as Knockout? If you are asking about carpet roses, the answer in the south would (for me) would be far different from Knockout. Carpet roses tend to have cercepspora, anthracnose, blackspot, botrytis blight, grow in a strange way like half-bush and half-creeper, wanna-be-climber, but ground halfcover. Knockout grows like a shrub, no disease, no deadheading. If you are asking about Carefree Sunshine versus Knockout, then that is different. Carefree Sunshine is as healthy and carefree as Knockout. The yellow roses just keep coming day after day and though I have never seen any blackspot or other diseases with them, they have a more natural look than Knockout, in that their foliage is so apple green (as opposed to the dark emerald of Knockout) and blends perfectly with the sweet little yellow sunshiny flowers with the pretty reddish-orange eyelashes....See Morekarl_bapst_rosenut
