Found rose from Raleigh Cemetery~ could this be Memorial rose? Th

Hi all, 1 or 2 years ago, 2 I think I went to the Raleigh Cemetery. It is in a terrible state. However, it was wonderful to explore the graves. I had some wonderful pictures that I can not seem to locate. While there I got a cutting of what appeared to be a rose, it was not in bloom, but looked rose like to me. I brought them home and potted them up. They rooted very easily. They grew and did not bloom the first year, but are blooming now. The foliage is very apple green, not shiny at all. The flowers are very very scented, but I am not sure what the scent is. (Not great with smells) Not particulary thorny, blooms in clusters. It just seems like a little wild rose or? Any ideas? Seems like a groundcover type... which is why I thought maybe the Memorial Rose. Truly I have no idea, but I will enjoy it whatever it is! Please see the thumbnails and the link for more details.

I think you've got a variety of Rosa multiflora.
The scent is wonderful. Check
Blooms in clusters. Check
Apple green foliage. Check
More leaves per compound leaf than almost any other rose. Check
Deeply fringed stipules at the base of the leaf. Check.

Double check, if the anthers turn brown before the petals start to fade.

There is a variation on multiflora out there that is much shorter and well behaved. It's a natural variation. I had it in the garden and got rig of it, thinking I could get some that was down by the ferry landing. Only the Fisheries and Wildlife folks bulldozed it to increase a parking area. (Roses ARE wildlife, too.)

If the next growth it puts out (almost before the blooms are over) is really vigorous, you have the barn eater multiflora which needs to be sited carefully in home yards.

Thank you Ann for the quick response! I will watch as the blooms fade to observe the anthers... as well as the new growth. Fiddlesticks... I was hoping it was something "special" but it is cute just like it is. If it is vigorous, I will have to keep it in a pot.. I have no room for a barn eater!

Hi - What era is your cemetery? Is it still active? I volunteer in the Sacramento City Cemetery, active in 1850-1915. We try to focus on roses from that era. Georgia Drennan wrote about "Everblooming Roses" to be planted in southern cemeteries in 1910. I think she was in New Orleans. I would be tempted to follow her suggestions, to a large degree. The book is not readily available, although you can purchase a CD of it through Heritage Rose Foundation. I ran a copy of the section about the cemeteries, and if you (or anyone else) would like for me to copy and mail it, I'd be glad to do so. It may be possible to scan it in, too, but my scanner isn't great. Drennan's point was that you should plant roses that are repeat-blooming, rather than ones that bloom once, such as Mme Plantier or wichurana, which was touted as the "Memorial Rose" and planted widely as a ground-covering rose. She lists a lot of this forum's favorites. I wouldn't go for Lavender Lassie because it's way too modern. Some of the HMs may fit your time period. You probably would be wise to start with a definition of "antique" rose, as it pertains to your site. Lamarque was really popular back then, but Mme Alfred Carriere is wonderful, so I'm not recommending that you grow Lamarque instead. I'm not so sure about pink climbers - if Maman Cochet works for you, that's a good choice. How does New Dawn do in your area? It's 1930, so again, may not be "antique" enough. Cornelia is 1925. Lady Waterlow is a very popular rose in our cemetery, and is 1902. However, don't know how it would perform in the south. For your large spot, another thought would be a banksiae. We often find them in our old cemeteries, grown in a heap, with the added advantage of no prickles. Fortune's Double Yellow is a prickly beast, if you ever need to trim it. Some of the teas get very big, if you let them build on themselves. Blush Noisette would be lovely, too - we have one that is ten feet around and seven feet tall, and the constant bloom and lovely fragrance is a great advantage. We find it in old cemeteries everywhere, along with "St. Leonard's" and others. As for the height - I'm assuming it's a rail fence - the one in Wooster's Roses of Legend and Romance garden has two heights of fence. The bigger one is about 4 1/2 feet high, with four rails, and goes along the garden perimeter. Interior fences have three rails, about 3 1/2 feet high. Here are some photos to help you visualize. Scattering ashes in the Sacramento cemetery is not allowed, even if mixed in with the mulch! The Sacramento cemetery has a lovely stone marked "Alice." It's in the plot with Blanche de Belgique, and tugs at my heart because my gardening grandma's name was Alice. She's buried in a Victorian-era cemetery in Hamilton, OH, with beautiful pink granite upright markers, but there are nothing but shrubs and trees throughout the cemetery. Not a flowering plant in sight. She'd have loved having roses at her grave. Stockton Rural Cemetery is still actively burying people, and has quite a few roses there, so it may be a northern California option. The cemetery in Santa Rosa is planning to replant old roses, working with Gregg Lowery - he and Phillip had collected roses there years ago, mapping out where they got them, and now there is a chance to reinstate them. There's also a "green burial" option, such as offered in Mill Valley at Fernwood - no roses, but a more natural approach. I read a book called "Stiff" by Mary Roach - not for the weak of stomach! - and it described an initiative to compost bodies in Sweden. It has a certain gardener's appeal, doesn't it? As for myself, I plan to have my ashes taken to Fletcher, OH, where I will join my folks and grandparents, in a little rural cemetery near a covered bridge. I'm with Connie - I want my remains in a spot, even if no relative ever visits it. I go to the cemetery every time I come back to Ohio, not to preview my future resting place, but to pay my respects to my mother and dad. You like those Fl. roses?? In a private garden with daily care, roses on fortuniana root stock look much cleaner. Some of those roses have been around for a few (?) years. When staking my fortuniana roses I always use brown or black "panty hose". While living in Fl., I went over there twice. Really nice display of a good variety of different roses. I use to hear people say you can't grow good roses in Florida ALL the time. Yeah, right. You should see this garden in early April :)

Hi all. Isn't the internet wonderful: connecting rose people from around the world? : ) Playinmud, from what I can see, your rose looks like "Louise Yeadaker"! The photos of Duet on HMF don't look like the "Ubel's Pink", but photos elsewhere do. Regarding "Duet's" fragrance, several years ago while visiting gardens in CA, I made a notation in my journal which read, " Duet - fragrance YUCK." I remember nothing else about the rose aside from the fact that I detected an unpleasant smell. I don't find "Uebel's Pink" to be unpleasant, but must say, that chemical/burnt sweet smell could have caught me off-guard several years ago. Who knows? I'm at least a week from my first bloom of "Radiance." One sniff and we'll be able to ID "UP" as "Radiance", or not. Thanks again for your help. Jen.

If it was Raleigh City Cemetery you visited (as opposed to Oakwood), you were a brave woman.

I nervously checked around Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville on Friday, hoping the folks I could see in the woods would stay put. They did; but, unfortunately, I also saw that, despite horrendous monument desecration at Cross Creek, there had been mower-mania there for quite some time, and there were no signs of roses.

Hmm, not sure if it is the same or not. The Raleigh Cemetery is deserted, woody, overgrown, but not too scary the last time I was there. Of course I had my husband with me... I have not heard of Oakwood, I will google it. It is too bad no roses in Cross Creek, need to google that one to. Glad you stayed safe! No mowers whatsoever where I was. I did get a few iris, and daffodil bulbs along with the rose..

Two different Raleighs IF I've got my memory turned on before my second cuppa this a.m.

About the Memorial Rose. It's R. wichurana and it's a ground hugger with unbelievably healthy deep green foliage (That close to the ground, you'd think it was Black Spot central.) I bought mine, as I don't think I've ever overlooked it in a southern cemetery.
From what NERoseman has said, it's fairly common in New England cemeteries.
My wichurana blooms later than multiflora and is followed by cute small red hips.

Yes, that is right,I am in Memphis. Ann, I did want to mention that I just checked the anthers and they are dark..as the petals are fading. So, it must be the Rosa Multiflora, now to watch the new growth.. hoping it is not to vigorous..

jennbenn: I agree with Ann-- it looks like multiflora. Wichurana has smaller, very glossy thick leaves.

Thank you all! It was just a stab in the dark, but good to know~ I kind of worked long and hard to get multiflora, but what can you do??

You will smile to yourself every time you are asked about multiflora because so many, many of us have saved a multiflora or a Dr. Huey just in hopes that it would be something special. (Yes, we grew our multiflora to the size of a haystack and I really loved the scent in spring.)
And then you'll feel a lot more reassured of your ability to propagate all the thousands of roses descended from R. multiflora.
You may even find something you'd like to cleft graft onto that multiflora later this year.

Ha! What fun! Glad you were in the "good" Raleigh Cemetery and not the scary one here. That's beautiful foliage on your rose - I'll keep a watch for some here.
