Sturgeon Memorial Rose Gardens Photos

This past weekend, my family and I were in Florida for a funeral, and decided to take a drive around the cemetery (I know that may sound odd, but I just find them peaceful and beautiful). I was so excited when I found an All America Rose Display Garden in the middle of the cemetery! It was a pleasant surprise on a sad day �� Plus, my own roses back in Tennessee have been dormant for about a month now, and it was nice to see so many blooms!
The garden is called the ��Sturgeon Memorial Rose Garden,�� and is located at the Moss-Feaster funeral home and cemetery in Largo, FL. They have a collection of over 400 roses, and truly is a beautiful setting! Here are some of the pictures (sorry there��s so many, but I couldn��t narrow them down!)

Good Sunday afternoon to you all! THANK YOU for your enthusiastic comments! I do so enjoy growing so many different types of plants, and wanted to show off some of them. (However, ROSES are my FAVORITES by far!) I am glad that you all appreciated seeing some of them. I will be posting more soon, as my picture vault runneth over! Phyl, this was my first year growing Razzmatazz...I have always grown the single coneflowers and they did so well I decided to try this one...so far, so good. That bloom pictured is representative of what they look like...I was pleased with mine. Its still young, though, so I hope it will be as nice next year. Leslie, My Nicole stays around 3 1/2 feet, but remember I am in zone 4 and it does get some winterkill every year. In a warm climate I believe it grows much taller. I understand that there is some confusion in that this rose goes by several other names: Tabris, Hannah Gordon & Raspberry Ice...or that actually these are all seperate roses bred by Kordes but are nearly identical, so if you are looking for this rose you may find it under any of those names and they all resemble one another. I like how this rose blooms in sprays of 3 - 10, so the plant always seems covered in blooms. I will post another photo of her in a new post soon. Regards to all, Celeste

Thank you people for your suggestions. Peace will be of course a natural inclusion, I adore her. And of the other roses mentioned, I already have some of them growing in my main beds so I at least know how the will peform here. I like the sound of Sacred Heart too. I have the site already picked out so I will be able to see into it from my kitchen and sewing room windows and because there is nothing there yet but the cockie's cage and a bit of builders rubble there is plenty of room to start. Charlie's cage is pretty ugly, but I have worked out how to flank it with a couple of Climbing Seduction. (When she flowers, the beautiful wavy petals always remind me of the graceful longer ballet frocks.) I have to include him, he has been in our family for over 30 years. I have a lovely old birdbath to include that came from their original Little Girl's garden in Donnybrook; little birds are such a joy to me. (We don't have sparrows, starlings, or blackbirds here in the west (yet). The plan is that when the garden is finished, it will be screened by a shrubbery on three sides, to help create a secret garden effect. The suggestion of the little cherubs is one that I had already been looking at. Must be true what they say about great minds etc etc.... I rarely visit the gallery, so I'm glad you posted the photos here. Although I visit the Largo area from time to time, I was unaware of this garden. It was interesting to see all those rebar stakes -- necessary additions to any garden that's planted with roses on Fortuniana.

Next time you're in the area you should visit, its really well maintained.

My mother was asking why my roses aren't staked back in TN and I was explaining to her about rootstock. It was different, they all kind of look like mini tree roses!

I was just going to say that some of the roses looked like trees. Thank you for posting these! They're really beautiful! The dedication on the plaque really made me smile. If only we could all do that. :)

You like those Fl. roses?? In a private garden with daily care, roses on fortuniana root stock look much cleaner. Some of those roses have been around for a few (?) years. When staking my fortuniana roses I always use brown or black "panty hose". While living in Fl., I went over there twice. Really nice display of a good variety of different roses. I use to hear people say you can't grow good roses in Florida ALL the time. Yeah, right. You should see this garden in early April :)

Thanks for posting these pics...I've been out there several times, but it is a bit of a drive for me.... I sure don't like those bright blue ties, seems that they are overdone, the rebar can be closer and 'invisible' ties would look better, but it's a sign that someone is caring for the roses and maintaining them, the last time I was there they were quite sad looking and lots of empty spaces so it's good to see they are now cared for and to be congratulated for this.....sally

It's actually only the second rose garden I've been to (First was the Univ of TN Gardens) and this one had much more variety. I just wasn't expecting the garden to be there. It was a nice surprise! I'm glad to hear that they are improving it from what you've seen is the past, Sally :)
