My trip to S and W greenhouse

Today was the most perfect day ! 82 degrees and just pretty clouds in the sky. After church I drove an hour to White House tn to visit S and W greenhouse. I was not expecting to see everything in bloom already !! It was heavenly. There was a sea of roses and annuals and hanging baskets just everywhere.
Here are some shots of the greenhouses .

This was the greenhouse filled with roses already sold to suppliers. The lovely lady working today ( the owners mom ) said 300 of them were reserved for the Kentucky derby !

Here are a row of tree roses they had ! I wish they had been my taste , all great floribundas but I prefer a weepy look . They were a steal at 34$ a piece.

I made friends with this lovely hen ! :)

Here's my cart all loaded up. It was hard to restrain myself !! I picked up 2 climbing Colette's , a pearly gate , James Galway , princess Alexandra of something slipping my mind and the last boscobel they had !! What a find ! I don't know if I want it because it's hard to find but I snatched it right up! :)

I was sad they were out of teasing Georgia , one I had loved before but I'm sure it'll pop up somewhere. I did buy 2 Clem's too . One called andromeda and classic jackmanii.

Here they are on my porch . I will pot them up later today .

Here is the obligatory dog photo ! Henry is 4 months old cavalier King Charles spaniel . And diesel is a 5 year old english bulldog . :)

Ok first of all your dogs are ADORABLE! I have been yearning for a cavie for years, he's precious. And congrats on all your great finds! It's always fun to come home with new plants. I am so glad you had a great day! I think you are going to love the Austin's you chose today. Happy planting and lots of puppy kisses!

Wonderful pictures, lilyfinch! I spent part of yesterday at the Antique Rose emporium in Brenham, TX. It was a glorious day, and many of the roses beginning to bloom. Came home with 3: Rosette Delizy, La Reine, a Chrystler Imperial my DH picked out. ( Honestly! I could have bought CI from Walmart!:)

Ditto. I've ordered from them 4 or 5 times, always with top-notch plants. Everything I got was always budded to Dr. Huey rootstock. That's not a complaint; just some people (including myself sometimes) are looking for a particular rootstock or own-root. That would be the only reason I could see someone wanting to look elsewhere. If you're happy with Dr. Huey, which is afterall the standard rootstock in the western U.S., S&W is a great choice. Mike

I order almost every yr from them. I am running out of room, but I lost quite a few roses this past season, so am looking to either replace or get something else. Their prices are the most reasonable, and shipping is also very reasonable. I plan to order CORETTA SCOTT KING, SUGAR MOON, and FIRED UP. Still debating if I want to replace two that died on me... BARBRA STREISAND and FIREFIGHTER (HACIENDA). Regan's is a great source also, but even for me being here in the same state, the shipping is a LOT more. I do want to order JULIO IGLESIAS, as they are the only source for a grafted one. But to make that shipping cost worthwhile, I would prefer to add a couple more roses. Just not sure what I really want yet. (Truth be told, I shouldn't be ordering anything at all!!) LOL

I did very little WSing this season except for the tomatoes and a few flats for planters. However, I'm doing some spring and summer sowing o fill in as needed--but without any sense of urgency--it's more whim-like. This year we want to do some work on the back fence which is longest length of the garden so I did no sowing for that and as perennials need be moved those mostly went into other beds where I might put seedlings. There was no great need for a mighty green wave of seedlings. Fortunately, I live where flats of petunias aren't too pricey, so I am having fun doing mix and match with colors and stripes. They're going into the tub tomatoes as edging to cascade down the sides. I've got some annuals that I WSed and those are for planters. I've still got half a flat of white alyssum to plant out. I just sowed a flat of Panarama Mix Monarda which looked so pretty in the packet that I bought two ;-) Of course, two years from now (if they germinate well) I'll be vexing them for their stoloniferous invasions, but at least the butterflies will be happy. It's finally warmed up, it was a drizzy and damp spring up to now--good for transplanting--but bad for achy bones. Sigh. T

Thanks, everyone. It was fun to watch the design come together and so easy to do. I think keeping the colors in the same order when sewing the strips together is helpful to make it look better. Marsha, Bonnie liked the red and white checkerboard, too. :-) Calliope, There are a few military personnel in Haiti from various countries. I think Abbi said there were 9 from the U.S. and they are stationed at the Embassy compound and is for goodwill. She plans to visit every orphanage/school that she can while there. Someone has already sponsored getting 50 indestructible basketballs delivered to her and the first set is on the way to her. Donna, I didn't start with squares but with six 2 1/2" X 18" (FQ) strips which ended up as a 12 1/2" unfinished block. Four across, five down. But, you can use squares if you want to. *grin* SharonG/FL

Thank you !! Any chance to share my dogs I'll take ! Boncrow , cavies are just wonderful and if my husband would let me I'd get a female ! Henry is seriously the most affectionate thing ever. I worried he'd get that separation anxiety you read about , but he's fine. He just loves to love on everyone! Diesel is great but indifferent.. Lol prefers my husband .
Kristy , I would love to visit ARE!! How wonderful. Funny how if my dh says he likes something , I want to buy it just to get him interested.

It really was a fun visit and I may have to go back for more Clem's and a couple roses that I wasn't sure of . Totally worth the drive!!

What a beautiful place!!! I don't think I could have restrained myself at all and would have gotten into some serious financial trouble in a place like that, lol. Your puppy kidz are both cuties too!

I love the idea that all over the country people are getting out to these fantastic nurseries. Tennessee is so beautiful, especially at this time of year.

Looks like you had a good day at the nursery.

Love Henry too. My friends male cav was named Henry too. He passed a couple of years a go but was a trip as well. He had a lots of ribbons from Crufts too

I have heard cavies are affectionate and have the nickname of love bugs. I will also buy a rose or plant that my hubbie picks out lol, if he shows a interest I'll get it. He loves to deadhead my roses too, he keeps a pairs of pruning scissors on the patio table so he can snip of a dead bloom at any given moment. If you go back let us know what you come home with! I can't wait to hear how your boscobel does for you.

As soon as boscobel opens I'll be sure to post pics !! I am glad my dh dosnt like to touch the roses , I love to do that myself . One time he wacked down a row of limelight hydrangeas about 7 years ago and that was the last thing I asked him to do ! Lol he humors me and looks at blooms and smells them . And dosnt care if I spend a small fortune on my garden stuff. We can live off hot dogs and Mac n. Cheese ! :) I'd rather have plants .
Seil , you would have loved it there! I know you grow lots of floribundas and they had a ton ! I fell in love with a few , one called jump for joy , white licorice was gorgeous and this one called Anna's promise . I don't even like oranges but maybe my heart is changing ! Lol
