I didn't make this huge.....it's about 52X64 at this point and will be going to a friend's daughter who is deployed to Haiti for a year. I think her 2 little boys will cuddle in it until she gets back. I plan to use a wider than normal dark blue/navy with white stars for binding. I'll post another picture when it's fully completed. I added the checkerboard red and white squares to make it longer (they were left over from the Twister Heart). Even though this is scrappy, it's controlled scrappy and I like it. I can't do haphazard scrappy yet..........I still like to be in control. :-)

Fun quilt, Sharon.

I'm like you; I haven't tried a true scrappy quilt yet either. One of these days... I keep collecting websites and photos, and some day I'll give it a try. I'm just way too structured. I just think that things will always come out better if I'm controlling them.

I really like this many trips around the world...looks great. I've done two or maybe three now, standard trips around the world and while making the trip end up ripping and resewing to get the overall effect on the top. After doing my last one, I said to self-never again...and now you present me with an alternative that is really nice. Controlled scrappy works with this design, anything too scrappy and the effect would be lost.

My grandfather, grandmother and aunt are buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier California. I always enjoy going there. They are buried right under a large tree at the top of a hill so sitting is very peaceful,the wind comes up the hill and is very cool. The highlight of the trip there is of course the rose gardens, they are so beautiful. I really enjoy going there, the best time to go is in april when everything is in bloom. I have also visted the beautiful Mausoleum of Christian Heritage at Forest Lawn Memorial in Covina Hills, which if you are familiar with this area of southern california it is not to far from Rose Hills. They also have some of the world's greatest religious art and the Mausoleum of Christian Heritage to view mosaic recreations of the greatest scenes from Michelangelo's immortal Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings and beautifully crafted stained glass windows. The front of the mausoleum has a beautiful mosaic it is the world's largest religious mosaic, the Life of Christ Mosaic, so visiting cemeteries is not a morbid thing at all, I think. Carrie

B&W printer recommendation?

Your best bet is to take those negatives into a darkroom, the R2400 is your second best bet. If you don't have darkroom equipment, people are just about giving it away these days. I bought three enlarging lenses in the last four months. Each lens new would have cost over $250.00 and I didn't pay more than $20.00 for any one of them. My reason for the darkroom suggestion is this: Photography has always been somewhat paradoxical in its position in the art world. A silver print (B&W) made in the darkroom and properly processed has the longest life expectancy of any known art media -- a stainless steel sculpture might compete. At the same time color photographs hold the position on the opposite end of that scale. It wasn't until the 1970s that color photographs were even tolerated in art museums (Sarkowski bought some Eggleston prints for MOMA). The right inkjet materials are an improvement over old chemical based color, but in comparison to darkroom silver prints inkjet prints are still ephemeral. A B&W print from the R2400 is still made with inks that will fade. Darkroom not a reasonable option, then the R2400 makes really superb B&W prints. I use that printer. I have a friend who just bought the newest Canon (also designed to do B&W) and she is raving about it, so based on her recommendation I'd endorse that option as well. P.S. it is possible to beat a decent B&W print from a "color designed" printer. There are three ways to go. One: Give up on expecting neutral B&W and add a color tint to the image; make a brown and white print and use the color inks. Be happy. Two: Get a custom profile for the printer and software that will allow you to edit that profile (not necessarily cheap) and then painstakingly adjust the profile (could require expert help). Three: There are companies (see link below) that make special inks. Lyson's quad black inks make really nice B&W prints. The problem is you have to take the color inks out of the printer and it becomes a B&W only printer. That could be an option however -- buy a used printer like an Epson 1280 and dedicate it to B&W only. This would cost less than the new R2400. Have you considered taking your own? Grab your camera and find some cool building around your area. Then have them made to your exact specifications? Just a thought. Other than art.com or poster.com (same place I swear) I don't know a good source for them.

NervousNancy... Our pendants and DR chandelier are Murray Feiss and I purchased them at EXPO Design Center (owned by HD). There are 2 finishes...ours are in Antique Pewter. There's also a Grecian Bronze (similar to ORB, I think). The DR chandelier isn't very big b/c our DR is small. They do have larger chandeliers, if you're interested in those as well. P1095AP - 1-Light Morningside F2050/5AP - 5-Light Morningside Our faucet is the Kohler VinnataÂ® Kitchen Sink Faucet (K-690) in Vibrant Brushed Nickel with the handle on the right. The handle location is adjustable: it can be on the left, right, or middle...it's up to you. The nice thing about being adjustable is that if you don't have enough room behind the faucet for the handle to work properly, you just mount it in the front. We bought it at FaucetDirect.com. There are 8 finishes and it comes in 2 sizes (main sink, the one we have, and prep version (K-691), which is a couple of inches smaller). We love our location as well! Actually, we're on a 3-acre lot w/a street on the other side of the berm in the back then a horse farm/farm under agricultural preservation. We do have neighbors...across the street from the front yard and on either side of us...you just can't see them from our back windows! Plus, we planted a double row of evergreens on one side to block the NW wind that also blocks our view of that house (to the right). Our neighbors on the other side planted a row of pear trees so we didn't feel we could plant evergreens there. But, they're farther away so it's not a big deal...plus we have nice neighbors! Looking at the pictures again, I just realized that those are the pics taken before I cleaned the granite! So, it still has the granite dust on them from the work they did when installing the sink side. (The other side is not done yet, the granite is just placed on the counters, not aligned or secured. We're waiting for a replacement for the cabinet they damaged when they began the install on that wall.) Good luck on your choices & welcome!

I love it!!
The 'many trips' pattern is a good one. Like V, I have made a few standard 'trip' quilts but never did one like this. I like totally scrappy quilts, but I think this pattern looks better as a controlled scrappy.

They will love it, very patriotic! The only way I can do random scrappy is if the blocks are offset by a similar color through out the pattern. It's not totally scrappy then is it lol!!!

Amazingly nice! Love it. I didn't know we had troops in Haiti. Are they still trying to rebuild after the disaster? I'm an army brat......my father saw three wars and I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around mothers being deployed for anything but short stints. It's hard enough when it happens to fathers.

This is the prettiest Many Trips I have seen -- because of the controlled colorway you chose. Very nice & sweet gift to help her little guys while she is gone.

Bonnie Hunter is able to archive her QuiltCam episodes now - You Tube. I am trying to watch them as I get a chance -- I learn some little trick every time I watch her. I recommend it whenever you have a few minutes. She is making me *think* more about scrappy. I am still working on the string blocks from a workshop I took from her last year. I don't have the huge amt of scraps she does (and many of You - You know who you are! :~).

A Big Thanks to this young Mother and her Family for all they are sacrificing for us!

Thanks, everyone. It was fun to watch the design come together and so easy to do. I think keeping the colors in the same order when sewing the strips together is helpful to make it look better.

Calliope, There are a few military personnel in Haiti from various countries. I think Abbi said there were 9 from the U.S. and they are stationed at the Embassy compound and is for goodwill. She plans to visit every orphanage/school that she can while there. Someone has already sponsored getting 50 indestructible basketballs delivered to her and the first set is on the way to her.

Donna, I didn't start with squares but with six 2 1/2" X 18" (FQ) strips which ended up as a 12 1/2" unfinished block. Four across, five down. But, you can use squares if you want to. *grin*

Not sure I can think of it as scrappy but like it a LOT! I too have done a few trips around the world but like this pattern better and the checkerboards are perfect addition. I think I will keep them in mind for a project I have in the works.
Your friend will be thrilled. Good job as always. TFS

Jayne, I'm getting a different idea of what scrappy really is. It doesn't always mean many fabrics with no rhyme or reason.....which would be Scrappy Chaos. Scrappy now means (at least to me) I'm using bits and pieces that were leftovers from another project.....but I do prefer Controlled Scrappy. I can do a Crumby Chaos block, but I sure do not like the appearance of a full quilt of them. I have to put an Hourglass or some other block in between them.

Anita, I've put a link to an Irish Chain so you can see the difference. There's a lot of blank area in the Irish Chains that are ideal to showcase quilting.

Thank you, LindaB. I think when you get right down to it, we all want a say in how we put our quilts together and what color/fabric goes where. :-)
