Japanese maple was 3/4 skirted 2 years ago. Can I still graft?

I love this tree it is my jumbo banzai.
It is about 3" at the base and stands about 9'.
It is pruned to be very sparse.
A few years ago a landscaper skirted the base of it about three quarters of the way around. it is sent shield and there is bark about two thirds of the way around with some scarring. But there is still a dead spot
My question is can I still take material from one of the upper branches and graft in a repair if I cut back to the Old wound?
Could I just remove 3 inches of the trunk and graft it to itself?
When would I do this? I know this would've a good time of year to relocate the tree.
I would obviously have to support the thing and splint it.
I know it sounds crazy and kind of extreme but maybe even a plaster cast.

Unfortunately, I doubt many will see your post in this obscure photo sub-forum. Also, I am a little uncertain about some wording in your post, but I think I understand the general idea.

Trees can often cover over their wounds if they are growing vigorously and are in good health. You mentioned that your tree has been "pruned to be very sparse". That sounds like you are making it much harder for the tree to successfully recover. Starving the tree of food by limiting it's foliage and forcing it to overcome pruning wounds would certainly present obstacles to the tree's recovery.

It is unlikely that removing a section of trunk would be the way to go. A bridge graft might help, but is probably not worth the trouble. Again, what you need to do is to increase the tree's vigor, and the best way to do that might be to leave it alone for a while! And, yes, the plaster cast is a crazy (bad) idea.

i also dont understand your words... skirting is not a tree term ... and i surely dont understand .. if it happened years ago.. what difference it makes to taking new cutting ... it alive.. thats really all a cutting need be ...

the best suggestion.. is to post a pic on the DISCUSSION side of the forum.. which is very active... we can define the problem.. give you the proper terms... and set you on your way ...

Michelle2013, You should very good germination from seeds you get from Rinoa. I have. She is trying very hard to build a good reputation for quality plants and seeds. I believe she has done this already. It is a sad thing for people as you speak of buying all those seeds and getting so few to germinate. This is topic of conversation on a few groups that I frequent. The concern is not just germination rate, it is finding reputable sellers of seed that actually send you seeds from the pod parents that you carefully selected. I am sure most people realize that they are not going to get a clone of pod parents with seeds, but hopefully something similar in one characteristic. One person purchased 2000+ seeds of a few different hybrids and they got a few mixed colors and all the rest "Pink". Rick

The understock stays graftable much longer than the scion. I have re-grafted understock 2 months after the initial graft failed, and it worked fine. Grafting should be done when the understock is coming out of dormancy. I don't look for bud swell, I look for white root tips. Just lift the understock out of the pot and look for new, white root tips. This means the plant is coming out of dormancy. Also, be sure to cut the top few inches off the understock and allow it to bleed for 4 or 5 days before grafting. And don't water the understock. You want it to be relativly dry when you start grafting, or sap will bleed into the graft and ruin it. If you lift a potted understock it should feel relatively light in weight. A heavy pot means the soil is water-logged and the graft will bleed excessively. After grafting, keep the whole plant on the dry side. I give mine, which are in 4" pots, about 3 tablespoons of water twice a week. After the grafts have healed and the scions begin to sprout, you can increase watering, but not too much. Its still possible to drown the graft for a few more weeks. Once the leaves have really started to unfurl and the graft is looking more like a little tree, you can start regular watering. This may be a whole month after you see the first signs of growth. The grafts need to be in a protected, high humidity environment for a couple of months and then gradually weaned off the humidity. If you don't have a greenhouse, you can make little tents out of bamboo skewers ($1.00 for 100 at Wal Mart)and baggies that will do the trick. This works well for me. I also mist regularly and use a humidifier. Hope this helps!

There's a major mis-step in the process... Prior to doing the carpentry, the leaves on the scion need to be clipped off leaving about 1/4 - 1/2 inch of petiole. The understock can either keep its leaves or really it doesn't matter. It's common to chop a 3 foot tall understock down to one foot where no leaves are and graft your scion right to that. No problem there. It's more than ok to chop the understock way down so it isn't tall as well. The plants may be sealed with all of the above mentioned materials. (parafilm, bud stip, rubber band) The grafted plants need to be placed under a large tree so they receive minimal light. Perfect conditions are dappled light. Or you need to create this type of an environment. A camping tent will do the same work in a barn for example. The graft will only be successful if the petioles turn black, then fall off to expose a healthy bud that has pushed from below the petiole. Actually, summer grafting is 100% less work due to time involved. The new graft should be known to have been a success in approximately 10-14 days give or take a week. Also, do not water the understock prior to grafting. You want it almost dry but just a bit moist. Too much water and you have a dead scion. After the graft shows success, place it in full shade for the next two full years. And... when you place it into shade, give it one week of keeping the understock almost bone-dry again, but giving it just enough water to not allow it to die. This is MAJOR. After that week, you can water it as often as you like. Heavy amounts of water won't do any harm. You still won't know if the graft is successfull until the following spring. Careful overwintering surely plays its part in the process. Don't go over 50 degrees F and you'll have given them enough cold for any dormancy requirements. Grafting ends about August the first for Maples. (Mid July - Beginning of August) You can also graft Ginkgo the same above-mentioned way. I have my roses six feet apart but when I see so many roses look beautiful that intertwined with one another looks even more beautiful and compliments. I have Maggie and B.R.Cant. I left those 2 alone. Within 8 ft apart. But the rest, I start to put 1 or 2 within 6 feet and then realized what if...time will tell. Yes, temptations to buy more is bad. Limited space is another issue I have. And I know I messed up just matter of time. Unless, I redesign my backyard my chances are slim with limited funds. I rather do interior first maybe in time but I doubt it. Thinking of doing pots which I know nothing about is another research I need to do . Jin

Loggers and 'tree trimmers' around here use the term skirting to describe removing the lower branches of a tree usually in an even manner. It works on a lot of trees, especially conifers, but a Japanese maple? I think not, even though I see a Dutch bob cut on them all the time.
Here's how I treat most of my weeping Japanese maples. It comes out much more interesting to the eye.

Show us a picture, but from your description, I doubt it will work. Grafting is usually done on small diameter wood, finger size or smaller.
What caused the dead spot? A wound from cutting or sun scald from when it was 'skirted'? Unknown?
