Mantis decision; 2-cycle or Honda 4 cycle?

I am going to buy a Mantis Tiller. I have the option of a Honda 4-cycle or Echo(Kioritz)engine. Since both engines are essentially the best in class I am wondering which way to go.

I own an Echo Trimmer and could use my two-cycle mix for the tiller. Other than wearing earplugs and ticking off my neighbors, the noise isn't an issue.

I keep seeing comments referring to the power and durability of the Honda engines and that they are easy to start.

So which way should I go? Does a 2-cycle have more real power(torque) in the operating range?

A 2-cycle engine makes sense for a chain saw, where you have to hold the weight of the thing while you are using it. Since a tiller rests on the ground and the weight of the engine actually helps it dig in, in my opinion it doesn't make sense to use a 2-cycle engine on a tiller, even a lightweight one like a Mantis.

Someone said something somewhere else on this forum that made me think that 4-cycle Honda engines were no longer available on the Mantis tillers. Perhaps that was a misunderstanding on my part.

If you have trouble getting a Mantis with a 4-cycle Honda engine, you might consider a Honda FG110 tiller or possibly even a Red Ox tiller.

Apparently, Honda has not been able to supply enough engines. We are running into problems with other Honda equiopped products.
The new 2 cycle Mantis has a new muffler which is very quiet, probably more so than the Honda. It might have to be de-carboned more often though.
The Honda is a very nice motor but it only holds 100ml of oil. The oil must be changed every ten hours of operation or the engine won't live. We have seen a few pooched from lack of maintenance. Check the air filter frequently on either one.

The Robin is still the lightest 4-cycle trimmer I know of, and it's really a nice unit. My friend has one and I envy it. You can find it for just under $300 (Makita makes a rebadged version of the same trimmer). But in the $220 range, there a lot of quality 2-cycle models. A lot of the newer ones come with small catalytic converters, and I would expect them to be a little quieter, and of course they meet the newest emissions requirements. Husqvarna and Shindaiwa come to mind, but are certainly not the only ones. My experience with Echo and my recently-acquired RedMax are very positive. The RedMax doesn't need a converter to stay green - it uses a unique stratified charge induction process to more thoroughly scavenge the chamber after the power stroke. It's also suprisingly quiet to me. There is also Tanaka, Kawasaki, Stihl, and some others that I'm sure I'm forgetting. All of these brands should be stupid-easy to start, BTW. My Redmax will start within three pulls when cold, and when it starts I just close the choke while it continues running and I'm on my way. Hot starts are immediate on the first pull without even touching the throttle, every single time. It's extremely user friendly that way. I would expect the same for the others, too. Finally, I strongly suggest using Mobil T2 Racing 2-cycle oil in whatever you buy. I just discovered this stuff, and it's unbelievable: no smoke, very little smell, and it's going to give excellent lubrication. Others here agree. You will not lust for a 4-cycle nearly as much if you use this oil!

It would be cool to have one of those Toro commercials with the 'V' engine, but $350 would be more like it. The 'V' was the predecessor to the 'E' (Duraforce) and had squared-off cooling fins, iron cylinder liner and full roller bearings. It was assembled mostly with 'Tri-Round' thread-forming screws that tended to vibrate loose. The lower crank bearing tends to get excessive wear, making for too much end play in the crank which puts the rod journal and wrist pin bearings in a bind. It's possible that a well-maintained 'V'-engined mower may not have this problem. I think many have the same problem mine (1994 10201) did - the muffler cover bolts loosened and backed out until they started to be hit by the blade, which would exert a lot of force on the lower bearing, possibly pulling the crank down over time. This also caused the bolts to wallow in the threads of the muffler plate which ruined that too. The shroud base mounting screws also loosened and the base legs eventually cracked. If I had been diligent with checking all fasteners on the mower at least before, once during, and after the season, I may have avoided all the problems I had with it. I had never had a mower before that required such attention, so I didn't start doing that until after I had to practically rebuild the mower.

The trans was starting to go bad in my Honda HRB216TDA, and it only cut up to 3", so I sold it. I already had a 10550, and I bought a 10684 4-cycle. I think he's being illogical about the Lawn-Boy. At his age, and with a free mower, what the heck does he care that somebody else had trouble with them? In my experience, people do have trouble with LBs because they're idiots. I'll never forget my next-door neighbor who had a new Gold model with 'F' engine back in '94 when we moved here. It smoked bad, and I later figured he had been mixing the fuel with too much oil. Well, he coked-up the exhaust ports, and in the process of trying to get to them took the mower completely apart. The mower was never assembled again. He took it to the shop in a box and got a new 4-cycle. There have been many other stories like this with LBs, so everybody thinks they're 'troublesome'. One thing for sure, if he takes it, make sure he's got a special gas can for it. Old people forget things. What was I saying?

First trial. Wouldn't start, confusion about the choke, when done read the manual again, says to start with choke closed on a cold start, open on a warm start. Forgot to turn the switch to on duh. Whatever. I had turned the blades to till and set out to enlarge and reshape a small patch I had done with a tractor. I did have to break up some sod on the edges. But no matter where I was in there, it likes to bounce, does a number on your arms, hope I get used to that, I did put on hiking boots and took my watch off. One hand is still shaking an hour later. It is easy to miss spots, but overall I am pleased, got the manual out, read it again, and now all I don't quite understand is messing with the throttle, air filter, will get into that later. Think I understand how to do the oil now. It is a pain to clean it. I didn't want to hose it or soak the tines in a bucket, so took them off, pulled off all the stuck grass and dirt, washed down with a scrubbie and old cloth; it's in the back hall air drying. I don't think that detangle tool would do much for me, easier to just take the tines off, time will tell. I'm hoping it will be a little easier in cultivate mode in an area that is dug and planted. Next I will try the edger to neaten what I did today. I don't think I would try to break up very much sod ever again, and I don't think it would be safe to use on the terrace the way it bounces. But I can see what it will do from the sidewalk and find a way to get the rest done. The bottom line is that I could not have hand dug and gotten the soil so fine, would have taken a lot more time and energy to do that, never could have broken up the soil that well. It does run quietly, is a real little work horse. Thank you for giving me the courage and info. A lot of that is in one of the manuals. The arbor is dis-assembled and stored in the garage, had to move on without it for now.

I own a Mantis with the 2 cycle Echo engine and wouldn't have it any other way. It is powerful, and requires almost no maintenance.

I still need to change the oil annually in my generator, snowblower, pressure washer, motorcycles, ugh!!!

I have the 2-cycle Mantis and it is one impressive piece of machinery. Strong as can be, starts easily and runs well. It's built by Echo. I also have two other machines that run on 50:1 mix so I don't mind keeping a can of it around.

One thing about the 2-cycle though, it does give of quite a bit of vibrations. Never tried the Hona version but I'd assume it would be somewhat smoother.

I live near the Mantis factory and bought it there. When I was looking, I asked about the 4-cycle Honda and was told that it's a good engine but parts, if necessary, are hard to come by. Odds are you won't need parts but if you do...

If you call to buy from Mantis direcly, ask if there are any reconditioned units available. They are pretty much as good as new and carry the same 2 year warranty and 1 year satisfaction guarantee as every other Mantis.

I'm an avid fan of the Mantis, having had and used extensively the 2-cycle Echo powered one for the past 5 years. They're great. No way would I part with it. (my wife would shoot me if I did! ~grin~)

This thing has been totally reliable, with only an occasional air filter and plug change. I've done some jobs for a neighbor, and he finally decided he needed a "mini-tiller", too. Unfortunately, he got talked into the Honda brand...he's so sorry now...they don't do the same job. The patented tine design of the Mantis, plus the Echo performance make all the difference in the world. Contrary to a comment made above, you don't need extra weight to have these little guys do their job. You'll be amazed at what you can do....including tearing up sod in previously un-tilled areas like a flower bed, or whatever. I do own and use a big tiller for the major garden area, but still would never part with my Mantis. One option I would recommend you buy is the "kickstand". It's not expensive, and it's a real convenience.

Go for it. You'll be pleased.

I haven't used the two-stroke model, but just started using the honda equipped 4-stroke mantis this spring and its GREAT! Starts on the first pull every time and its so much easier not having to mix the fuel and it doesn't give that 2-stroke exhaust stench either. I have to agree that the extra weight is probably more beneficial to the operation of the machine. Helps it to dig better.

Hi,
I am trying to landscape my font yard. My front yard has not been having any worked done for several years. The soil is compacted so much, it is like rock solid. Can I use Mantis 2-cycle to loose these kind of soil? My friend told me to use at least 4 o 5 horse power rototiller.
