help me select an electric string trimmer please

I'd love to have a gas model, but I'm just not strong enough to operate it. Use a B&D edger which does a good enough job but takes forever - I have hundreds of feet to edge - and Bermuda grass which invades flower beds overnight.

Reading reviews online have me considering Greenworks 21212 but I've never heard of this mfg. Consumer Reports has reviewed the electric trimmers, but I no longer subscribe so can't access their ratings.

Turning to y'all, hoping you've had good service and will recommend to me.

Visit this site at the address below. It has some interesting info on electric trimmers. I know your "Pain" with gas trimmers. Initially (1970s) I felt electric was all I wanted for home use until dragging the cords and damp weather changed my mind. Hopefully, this info will help you. Possibly the new 4-cycle trimmer might be easier to start and manage. I have no research or personal experience. loger

Some heads are fully auto but most are semi auto. Fully auto tend to be a little finicky at times, at little dirt or poorly installed line can mess them up. Like ccecim brought up, look at the bottom of your head and see if there is a center cup that depresses. If it does you have a semi auto head that requires being bumped while at at least half throttle, preferribly at full throttle to extend line. Keep in mind that semi auto's also need to be bumped before the line gets to short. Their operation works on the weight of the extended line and centrifugal force to pull the line out. If line gets to short before being bumped out, their is not enough weight in the extended line to pull line out when the bump cup is depressed and releasing the stop dogs. Each bump will release an inch or so, may require several bumps to pull it all the way out.

Straight shaft yes. You may also want to consider bike handles and a hang harness. These are usually only used with a hard blade for better control but in your case I think it will help with the ole back. Take a little time to strap on the harness but it has a quick connect to the shaft so if you need to put it down to do something else it is easy to do. Just leave the harness on for when you come back to the trimmer. When the trimmer shaft connection is placed right it will just hand there perfectly balanced, then you use the bike handles to control it. The long straight shaft will get to the ground without you needing to bend over when it is all set up right.

I bought a Troy-Bilt strairt shaft weedeater and brush trimmer combined. I used this for five years without any problems,starting or otherwise. . Last year it would not start. So I bought another Troy-Bilt of the same model.They both are 4 cycle engines. I had some trouble starting the new one so I took all the gas I was using out of it (87 octane) and switch to (91 octane),Now it starts great and runs smooth. I also have two macholic 2 cycle chain saws that had the same starting problems..I switched to the 91 octane gas with the same oil mixture and now they both start fine.

I am suddenly out of sync with the “Boards” and try to get info in when I can. This is a concern and I have questioned my “Drs” since age 70 (at 72 now) I had a good 36 year career and my few absences allowed me to receive credit for 40 years of service at 57 years of age. My memory is starting to challenge me. I have met fellows less than 70 that did not know their age. I have spotted friends walking and knew they were off course and got them home. I stopped “Traveling and Fishing” when I realized was getting confused or forgetting simple matters. I walk 2 miles 5 week days and work projects and maintenance 2-3 days 2-3 hrs a week. That is down from walking 4 miles 5 days and working or volunteering all day My First 10 Years Of Retirement. “I Might J Just Be Tired” LOL! The Arc welder is up and running w/o finding a reason. After trying a different AC source and another AC Welder I knew mine should work and it did. The “Rods that would arc and stick, Started Continuing To Arc”. I can only say “It Was A Bug”! My rods were stored in a double wall Military Shell Container. Downsizing they are sealed in smaller sealed container, with like new flux. I’ll hope to find some answers with my issues or I’ll get off the 3 Mechanical Boards “Before 90”!.

The address did not appear with a line under it which usually means you have to copy and paste it in your Go To window. Try that, it works, I just opened it. Otherwise, run a search on Consumer Report On Electric Grass Trimmers. I hope this works because the info is too large to copy and paste. loger

Loger, I can't access Consumer Reports as I'm not a subscriber. Will go to the library to see it. Man, this place needs trimming big time - fescue growing a couple of inches a day.

Copy and past or type this last line into your search web window and select search. I believe you will find plenty info. Better still, you need to search your community for a personal user's opinion and demo. OR! Rent one for your job and personal opinion. I feel the ads on the cordless trimmers will be hard to pass. Be Strong! Keep your goal of POWER in mind.
