Honda F500 Replacement Engine

I have a Honda F500 Rototiller that I have had since the early 70's and it finally "died" on me. I am having problems finding anyone (local small engine stores) that can advise me on a replacement motor. I have found one place that can still order the individual parts - but I need to replace the entire engine. Any suggestions or advise?

Honda does not supply complete replacement engines for their products. Their general purpose engines have SAE bolt patterns and pto's to match American equipment. You should be able to adapt with a pulley and drilling new mount holes if necessary.

Egr valve can stick open and cause motor to stall. Old cars used vacuum to operate egr valve. Newer cars have electric solenoid operated egr valves. Not sure what ur car has but all can stick. Not to say ur ignition issue is main problem or just 1 of ur issues.

Bill From America via Fixya has told me something that I thought about last night, and that it could be the blade that is causing the problem. I had to drag it because the grass was so long and wet and although the mower is a huge flymo with wheels, I had to drag it because I couldn't get it through the grass. He said maybe a small stone has got lodged between the frame and the huge disk at the bottom, which is a possibility. I asked a lawnmower shop yesterday regarding the engine seizing and he was surprised if that is what has happened. He shook his head and said no and to take it in. I will give the blade a shot and then I shall have to put the next plan into action. As I had changed the oil I would have thought that even with petrol in it, there would be sufficient lubrication for the engine not to seize but I don't know. I cannot believe that a simple problem like fuel leakage can cause so much damage. Definitely a design fault. I would have thought there would be an automatic shut off valve if too much petrol was being forced through the carb, and then of course the engine would stall . I will endeavor to get the blade off and see. Prior to this happening I had only used it for about ten minutes. I left it for fifteen when It wouldn't start and it still pulled smoothly and then of course post carb it won't pull but in between the pull and getting the carb off, I dragged it and maybe that is the problem.

Well can't say about the obvious wear problem but sounds to me like you need to set the "static" governor setting. Loosen the clamp holding governor arm to shaft which comes out the side of the engine. Rotate the carb throttle shaft to wide open, turn the governor shaft coming out the side of the engine as far clockwise as it will go and re-tighten clamp. Sorry, I really dislike these engines. I've got the F500 with a GX160 Honda motor. The mounting plate on the tiller is slotted, newer engine is slid mostly forward in the slots shimmed up about 3/16" with a pair of washers at each mounting bolt-4 places. May have to experiment with belt length. This is definitely a different motor than original complete with solid state ignition.REJ2.

Canguy, Honda does provide replacement engines for their products. Not sure where you got that idea. The original engine on this old machine may indeed no longer be available as a complete engine but only due to being out of production for so long.

Hmm, I will check into that. I have never seen one or a catalogue listing for the all metric engines.

Engines for their equipment has to be bought through service dealers for the equipment. I don't know that you will find the list unless you are a Honda power equipment dealer. There are some engine such as used in the little EU generaters that only have parts. These engines are tied to the gen side in a pretty much a dedicated manner but engines that can be removed as a complete unit independent of the rest of the equipment are available.

As suggested, the old tiller engine was probably a flathead and those are dead as well as some older OHV's.
