Need help with my Honda GCV160 Engine.

Need help with my Gxv160 engine. Identification numbers are GJ03 2064084 SFL1.

I bought this mower and when it started it revved high for a few seconds and then settled. I carried out a full service to the mower and cleaned the carb, checked the govenor linkages / springs ( checked for stretched springs, binding linkages etc) I found nothing wrong here. So I split the engine to inspect the internal govenor. The splines on the plastic gear were excessively worn on one side of the gear, I replaced the entire assembly including the counterweights With a new part.

I reassembled the machine and it ran more or less just as bad as previously. Not holding revs and automatically changes it's high revving speed (even though I have the limiting screw all the way against the linkage to limit the top speed)

I split the engine again to find that there is already excessive wear on the splines of the new govenor gear. It hasn't even ran an hour.

Please help. Also I realise there are two shim washers (one thicker than the other) that sit on the govenor plunger shaft. Could someone please affirm which order they are meant to go. I currently have the thicker washer sitting up against the sump casing where the govenor is secured to the sump. (if that makes sense)

Well can't say about the obvious wear problem but sounds to me like you need to set the "static" governor setting. Loosen the clamp holding governor arm to shaft which comes out the side of the engine. Rotate the carb throttle shaft to wide open, turn the governor shaft coming out the side of the engine as far clockwise as it will go and re-tighten clamp. Sorry, I really dislike these engines.

Yes, the gasket or spacer if equipped could cause the leak. A spray of carb spray focused in that area while it is running may confirm it. (It will pick up speed)You also have to be sure that you didn't flip a gasket on re-assembly. You have to be sure on the main jet holes being clean. That is the reason for the tag wire. After soaking , I always re-clean with spray carb clean to fully dislodge the gunk removed with the solution. Your fuel needs to be fresh and the rest of the fuel system clean as well. Fuel cap must vent also.

Do you ever tilt the mower up on one side or hang it up to save space? If you do, you may be raising the exhaust side which will let oil contaminate the air filter. Gas usually gets into the oil when the carburetor continues to allow fuel in after shutting off the mower. The carb floods and gas gets into the oil. Any time you pick up one side of the mower, it has to be the carb side. That's why they always put the oil fill tube on the side opposite the carb, so you can drain the old oil without causing a problem. If your pleated air filter is oily, the engine may not run, or it may run 'rich', which will produce carbon and cause the oil to smell like gas. The Honda carb also has a drain plug bolt, so you don't have to remove the fuel bowl to flush it out. The oily air filter might be why its not running. Maybe you are the only one who knows how it got oily.

If you had oil in it then the governor is not working or hung up. You need to see if it is moving freely. Hard to diagnose without seeing it. But a un adjuster governors do many strange things. I would also suggest that you remove the shroud and gas tank. Only 3 nuts and look to see if the flywheel is hitting the magneto. Remove the spark wire first. Also see if the flywheel has any slop sideways. Also look to see if the flywheel bolt may have come loose. This engine has a heavier flywheel.

You could be right on the parts engine due to what else you've seen in regards to the oil and noises. However, if in fact what is happening is fuel is continuing to seep into the engine when sitting, once that is corrected- all may be fine. Here's what I would do. Verify that the fuel shut off valve actually works. Run up the machine, shut the valve off and when it dies- change the oil again. Refill with oil and for good measure just remove the spark plug and walk away to ensure the fuel has evaporated. Re install the plug, turn on the valve and crank it up. Now what do you have? Here's the way I see it. On occasion, you will find one of these that fuel slightly seeps past the float valve. This in itself could be giving you the symptoms you describe. If your test run as described above goes well, that is what has been happening. If not, I suppose that it is possible that enough wear is present, enough carbon is above the piston to make a difference etc.

Should there be a shim washer that my camshaft sits on to when I install it into the engine? Only reason I ask is that the cam gear that runs alongside the crank gear isn't sitting flush/level by a few mm. I think this may be my problem as my govenor gear won't be meshing properly to the cam gear If the cam gear is sitting lower than it should into the engine? Any help would be great
