Troy bilt tiller assistance, tine seals,removal

Hi,

i am looking for assistance with a TB tiller about 30-35 years old, sorry no tags, 8 horse mode. The tine seal leaks. My question is does anyone have tricks for removing old seal on right side? It is a tapered shaft, with a brass gear which i cannot seem to get out or try to remove it if i don't have to. I could trash the old one since it's being replaced but was not to sure thats the way it's done.

Also, i would appreciate any tips or tricks for installing new seals. Can i gently tap them into place using something similar in size, shape, ect. or am i better of squeezing them on with clamps?

I bought my TB back in 1973 and have replaced the seals many times. Its been a long time since I last changed them but I think I drilled holes in them and pry'ed them out. I made the mistake of scratching the housing so now they always leak. I use double seals on each side. I install them by tapping them in with a piece of pipe that is the same diameter as the seal... I was having the very same dilemna with tine seal replacement on my 78 horse...solution: Drill 2 holes into the old seal with an 1/8th inch bit opposite one another. Make sure you holes are close to the outer edge leaving enough clearence for the width of your screw. Drill only thru the steel outer rim!!!! insert a 2+1/4th inch deck screw into each hole about 1/4 inch deep. Use a claw hammer or pry bar to lift the seal out alternating sides. Took me 5 minutes!

I have a set of each, standard and the hard faced ones. $178 seems way out of line for the standard, $200 about right for the hard faced ones. I would buy aftermarket without any reservation. The ones I've seen on e-bay appear to be fine, especially the red ones made by K-D. REJ2.

Unsure what make engine you have. Look for engine #s. The only makes that I know can be converted with anything other than those little point eliminator things, are the Briggs- and not all of those either. .030 is a good plug gap and points .020 . I assume it is a Kohler or Tecumseh.

My set of HARDENED tines from Troybuilt are still like new after 8 years of tilling two gardens total 1/4 acre. Before, I had gone through two sets of standard tines in that time. Don't know if "heavy duty" is the same.

TroyBilt went bankrupt a few years ago, and its assets were acquired by MTD. Present-day Troy Bilts are made by MTD. I understand that they are still supporting the old stuff. Go to the MTD web site and do a search. Also, if there is a local dealer who handles Troy Bilt, they should be able to help. Good luck.
