Electric Wiring on my Milwaukee Grinder Question

I have a Milwaukee Grinder 9" which recently started only working for a minute then shuts down for a day or two. The brushes are fine and so is the motor. It's am not getting any power to the brushes. I called Milwaukee Tools and they told me its the soft start module and told me to 'by pass" it.

My questions is how do I connect the wires to do that?

A 9in. grinder has a pretty hefty motor. I find it hard
to believe that Milwaukee would tell you to 'by-pass'
the soft start module. The initial current draw on
that motor might trip your breaker, (if you're lucky).
Why not replace the module?

The techical support at Milwaukee disagrees with you. They said they do it all the time at their repair department. They also said it will NOT hurt the motor or my house.

It's a $35 part on a grinder which I only use to sharpen my mower blades with. Then I am not sure(and Milwaukee Tool isn't either) that is the exact problem. The brushes are not getting any electric power when I engage the power trigger.

I can send it into them for repair and it would cost about $100 including shipping to repair it if the module is the problem. A new grinder is about $180. If it is the motor, the it will cost just as much to repair then replace.

My name is Patrick Perry I own ‘A Worm’s Tale’ in Jacksonville Florida, Coos Bay Oregon, Cedar City Utah, Vancouver British Columbia and other locations. We are the largest producer of organic worm castings in the world. I live in Salt Lake City, but I evaluate each location every year. I have been using WWGrinder, TroyBilt, Craftsman, MTD and other chipper shredders for over 30 years. I prefer the basic WWGrinder design that has been coppied by others. I currently have over 20 machines that work well. I like extra heavy made flails with the exit screens these machines use for reducing the size of materials. After shredding, we sift using an expensive 1/8” trommel and reshred the larger materials. A worms mouth is 1/40 of an inch, so we regrind all shredded materials after they pass through a 1/8” screen. We also have at least 10 commercial grinders; we prefer burr grinders. We stock parts and know who manufactures parts for all these shredders. We usually buy hundreds of flails, chipper knives and have 10 screens of one size custom made at a time (1.5”, .75”, .25”, 125”); they usually cost $150 each. At each location we have mechanics that overhaul and maintain our shredders. We also have HUGE custom built chipper shredders that output material smaller than 1/8” If you need advice, parts or want to sell a working or broken machine, we buy and sell them after reconditioning. Most of the chipper shredders with exit screens are no longer made in the USA. The Chinese replacements are cheaply made with inferior steel and parts; they do not work very well; parts and exact engines become unavailable very quickly. Most people throw them away when they break. We keep a bone yard of obsolete machines for parts if you want to discard one and help others to repair their machines. If I can find a descent price for switch's, I need 3. I will repair the grinder, and sell it in a garage sale, just lazy and haven't looked for a supplier yet. Bottom line I would discourage you from spending that much to repair yours. I priced our part numbers on a 20 year old chainsaw from sears, (a better saw would cost $100, anyways the parts i could buy would have been $750,not in stock would be around $250. so after you figure the labor and all the BS I still couldn't get the saw to run for lack of parts, also those numbers doesn't take into account shipping which Sears charges like crazy. I can see how we evolved into a 'throw-away soceity"

Your message is very confusing. I think you want to know if you can use some junction boxes in the basement ceiling as a source of power for either some lights or some receptacles. You say there are conduits running from these boxes. If that is the case you might be in a region that requires everything to be in conduit. If that is the case then you can't use NM-B cables. Chicago is one of those areas. Depending on what those circuits supply you could pull power from one of the boxes. You can't pull power if those circuits supply a bathroom, or the kitchen or dining area receptacles. Also depending on what else is on the ciruit. You don't want to overload the circuit with your new load.

ronnatalie...I don't think there is a ground (or ground wire) in the 3 wire run from panel to dryer. It's the old flexible metal type of casing around the 3 wires (2 lines, one neutral). The block on the dryer electrical connection is grounded to the dryer cabinet. weedmeister...I'm very sure Miele is already wired with a 4 wire cord and you can't make any modifications. I e-mailed them and they got back to me within hours (great service). They said and I quote: "Thank you for your interest in Miele products. It is NOT recommended that the appliance be hard wired and that the plug provided be altered or changed in any way. Please follow the electrical specifications that state the following: This appliance must be grounded. In the event of malfunction or breakdown, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. This appliance is equipped with a cord having an equipment grounding conductor and a grounding plug. Only insert the plug in an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. WARNING- Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician, service representative or personnel if you are in doubt as to whether the appliance is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the appliance. My best guess is that they jumper the module just to test
and see if that is the problem, but don't leave it like
that indefinitely. There is a reason that the engineers
required the module. Do you have power to the trigger switch?, (possible bad cord). They are 'guessing' it is
the soft start module, so I take that as meaning it is a
very common problem. I say either spring for the $35 module if you think you can replace it yourself, or junk
the whole thing and go out and get a 4 1/2 inch grinder.
I've got a cheapie that I bought for $15 brand new, 5 years
ago and still works fine for sharpening my blades.

Thanks for the advice,

I am going to take it to a friend who owns a electric motor repair shop and fixes these all the time, maybe he has a similar grinder "for parts" available.

I was thinking of getting a HF 9" grinder for $49 since I only use it to sharpen my blades. I have a 4 1/2" grinder and I can tell you there is a HUGE difference between the two grinders when it comes to sharpening blades. I have a mower deck that takes 3 blades and I also sharpen my sister's mower that takes 3 also. Therefore I sharpen a lot of blades. One day I was at John Deere and saw how sharp their shargened blades look so I asked how they got them so nice and sharp. They told me they used 9" grinder and once I started using a 9" grinder it made all the difference in the world. IMHO.....

Sounds like a plan. If nothing else, your friend should
be able to get the module for you at a discount, being
as he's in the business. Report back with your results
