'Gruss an Aachen' and 'Pink Gruss' have the most perfect shrub habit, low, full and leafy, and they bloom like crazy. Here they need spraying, but I understand some growers in central areas consider them resistant.

'Mystic Beauty' is almost indistinguishable from SdlM, but that's a feature, not a bug! You might look at the related white 'Kronprinzessin Viktoria,' rose-pink 'Capitaine Dyel de Graville,' and lp 'Mme. Cornelissen' (listed as Edith de Murat by Roses Unlimited).

Consider also 'Prospero,' a really delightful rose that will stay short. In my experience, it is fairly disease resistant. I can't help with the teas and chinas

I have heard fantastic things about Gruss and Pink Gruss, I am glad you have such positive things to say, they sound like the shape and size I would want (and pink gruss is nearly thornless which is a big plus!)

I love SDLM, so I understand what you mean about that being a good feature of Mystic Beauty! BUT I already have SDLM and Kron. Viktoria right by the front door, and these would be pretty much next to them, so I would like a bit of variety if I can :)

How tall is the Capitaine? I Love the colors and have heard great things, but I thought it was a large. And I think Edith De Murat is a bit tall being 4' and maybe larger.

Prospero is very lovely, and I do not have any roses with that color and shape in my garden. The only red/redish roses I have are carefree spirit and thomas affleck. That may be a great option :)

Again, "Edith de Murat" as sold by RU is actually an SDLM sport mislabeled. I don't think you have to worry about any of those getting too big in Tennessee. They don't make long shoots. These roses can build to 4' in the Deep South if they aren't pruned, but mine are all under 3' so far. 'Souv. de St. Anne's' is a bit more vigorous than the others, judging from the first year's growth last yea..

I just got Napoleon, a China from Rose Petals Nursery (Florida) and it has fantastic, unbelievable fragrance. I also got pink Gruss an Aachen,Capitaine Dyle de Graville and Leveson-- Gower from them. All are in very well- rooted one gallon pots and the price was unbeatable. I am glad that I found this nursery.

Ceterum, I actually ordered a SDLM, my Thomas Affleck, and Mrs. Dudley Cross from them this spring :) They are a very wonderful nursery no doubt about that!

But I am still wondering the size of the Capitaine Dyel, and Napoleon may stay shorter in my area, but can get to 5' so I don't think I want to take that chance. and Leveson gets to be 4'+ so that would be too large for my specific use. But hey, if Napoleon has that amazing of a fragrance, I may have to find another spot for it in my garden! Thanks for the enabling!!! My poor husband has no clue what he's in for lol :)

I'm just starting out with the dwarf white polyanthas. (I thought these might be a good substitute for the white noisettes which I don't have room for.) I see you have 'Clotilde Soupert' on your list, but you may also want to check out 'White Pet' and some of the other dwarf poly's.

Of course, living in TN as you do, are rows of dwarf gardenias out of the question? They're the quintessential southern plant, and people do hedges of them here. Are they winter hardy where you are? They bloom heavily in spring and fall with the odd flowers through the summer, and when not in bloom, their foliage is beautiful, deep green and glossy.

'Capitaine Dyel' grows like a typical SdlM sport, branchy and as wide as tall.

Natalie, Rose Petals Nursery also has a really sweet small red single polyantha called Anda that I have fallen in love with. I'm growing it in a pot since the end of February. Can't vouch for BS resistance but the ladies at RPN say it does pretty well here - which is saying something, I think. It's not an OGR, was introduced in 1980 by Lens.

I also got Rita Sammons, a darker pink sport of Cecile Brunner. Etoile de Mai is a yellow small poly. Borderer is kind of coral and stays pretty short I think. Lauren is purple. Sweet Chariot is a miniature with good fragrance, they say. Martha Gonzales is a small found China. Mary Guthrie is a poly out of Australia I got from RU. It's a single that's a very bold deeper pink.

I don't know how much your climate would mitigate their size, but Perle d'Or and Lady Ann Kidwell are really lovely. They don't get really huge here, but apparently they're larger than I thought. But they're polys.

Old Grey Cemetery Noisette is a found rose from Knoxville. Mine has never been sprayed, seems healthy as a horse and with slight winter dieback at the ends of canes is right at 3-4' tall. It blooms well and self deadheads because the petals are so tight that it hasn't yet set an open pollinated hip for me (I keep up hope that it will.) Mine is five years old; the one in the cemetery is probably over a hundred and it has gotten five feet tall there.

Bellegallica, I don't think I can do Dwarf Gardenias, I believe they only grow in zones 9 & 10, and I am 6b/7a. My husband is from New Orleans so if we could do Gardenias, I'm sure he would find a place for one :)

Sherryocala, that pretty little rose looks just like my carefree spirit! I've got 3 in my front yard not too far from this new rose bed, so I don't think I want more single red's in there too. I do love your pictures, I have been so happy with my singles lately! I have looked at Borderer, and I really like Rita Simmons, but If I go the polyantha route, I will probably stick with Clothilde.

Ann, you always have great advice :) This noisette looks very pretty, definitely something to ask Pat at RU about, since they carry it :)

Clotilde Soupert - 1-1/2 years in the ground she's a stout 3' tall so far. Great plant here!
Ducher - don't have but I've seen photos from Hamp in Mississippi that look at least 6' tall and wide - maybe bigger
Mystic Beauty - supposed to stay relatively short hear but can get wide I've heard (see Hamp's pics in the photo gallery (his username is Old Blush)

Hermosa - mine are in their 3rd spring and planted 3 together about 2' apart a la David Austin. They have basically become "one bush" now about 3' tall. I assume they won't get a lot bigger.
Gruss an Aachen - VERY tiny. My last one still in the ground (3rd spring) is maybe a foot and a half tall and wide. I moved 3 others to pots - also small but doing better this year. If they get big, it must take eons!

Hmm. My Grusses didn't take long to make respectable small shrubs. One that is 2 yrs from a 1-gallon start is probably 30" x 30".

In Huntsville, south of Nashville just a bit, I had very good luck with Faith Whittlesey, a cream colored tea rose. I found it to be very disease resistant and it bloomed very well; a very pretty small-ish shrub about 2-3 feet at 1 1/2 years. It should stay small, from what I have read. from Roses Unlimited

I have Old Grey Cemetery Noisette; it has a beautiful bloom and is very disease resistant as well.

If you'd consider something a little larger, you might like Natchitoches Noisette.

Gruss an Aachen stays 3-4 feet if you don't plant it in too much shade. I rooted one from the mother plant and planted between (my intention was: in front of) the gardenias on the north side of the property and to my surprise that plant reached out to 5'. I love Grussie.

Christophers Marlowe - mine is about 4'high and a bit wider in full sun but I am not in Florida, only in coastal NC.

I second MichaelG's opinion that Prospero is a great, great rose an stays small.

How about Pearl d'Or or Arethusa? They might get bigger 6 or 7 years later but you can shear them back after each blooming cycle to the size you like. I will do that with Napoleon if it does want to grow to 5' - but I guess 5' is the Florida size.

Clotilde Soupert - I have her (2 actually) for 6 years, no leaf spot problems, blooms all summer but balls terribly in wet weather or in high humidity. Stays in 4' range. I hear it does much better in TN. It or she is sinfully fragrant.

Mystic Beauty - I just got this plant, too new to evaluate.

Ducher - I don't grow it but heard that it could get much bigger.

My first Capitaine Dyel and Leveson-- Gower were babies not well developed one gallon plants and I planted them in a very exposed site - they didn't make it through the first winter. I will plant the new ones in the more protected backyard although these plants are far better than the plants I had before. In any case I have no idea how big they could be when they become mature plants but it is not going to happen overnight:-(((

Cutting grass gets old. Go for more roses. I like all of your choices. I would add Marie Gonzales, Maggie, Cecile Brunner, Pink Buttons, Caldwell Pink, Marie Pavie, Marie Daly, Pat Austin, Jefferson Rose and Belinda's Dream.
