Mother of Pearl - New Growth? RRD?

Mother of Pearl is extremely vigorous in my garden. I have never seen a rose grow so fast! But I do not remember what its new growth looks like and there are no good pictures on HMF. I am worried about RRD, as I took out two infected ramblers in that area. Mother of Pearl had no signs of infection last Fall so I wonder if it could wake up in the Spring completely infected?

It is now covered in new red/purple growth, all over. (I am not sure how much "tea" this rose has in its lineage). The rampant growth may be caused by the extraordinary high temperatures this week. But there are numerous leaf axils (at the ends of canes) with two leaf rosettes instead of one. I didn't even get a chance to prune it this year.

I'd appreciate descriptions of this rose.
(BTW - No herbicide use)

Maureen, is there anyway you can post a picture of that growth? I know there are a lot of pictures of RRD growth on line that you can compare it too but if we could see it we'd be better able to give you our opinions.

You said you were monitoring last fall. If you are seeing the same type of growth all over the plant now, it's probably healthy. I doubt that the whole plant could be suddenly infected with RRD.

I removed my MoP last summer because of RRD. I remember the RRD growth was red, but I don't remember whether the normal new growth is red. Probably it is. Someone else will know.

Multiple buds at a site sounds a bit suspicious--I don't think my MoP did that, but it is normal on many varieties. So keep an eye on it, but don't do anything rash.

It would be smart for all of us to make notes on the color of normal new growth for all our varieties.

Mother of Pearl is just a wonderful rose. I hope yours is OK.

It would be highly unusual or nearly impossible for RRD to first appear on two basal shoots. Infection always occurs above ground where a mite has landed. Usually they infect a latent growth bud in a leaf axil, leading to a sick lateral shoot. Occasionally, it might start in the growth tip of one basal shoot. Basal breaks on 'Prairie Sunrise' are kind of odd-looking anyway. Incidentally, it's one of Buck's best roses, with a very large, fragrant flower.

I volunteer in a public garden where we have lost dozens of bushes to RRD. Ann nicely gave you all the points that indicate the bush is infected, and I agree with her. At our garden, we dig up bushes like this and work over the whole area to get as much of the root as we can find. If we think mites may be present we spray with super hold hairspray to try and immobilize them. Then we put the whole rose in a contractor bag (supersize heavy duty trash bag) and seal it with stretch tie or duct tape. These "body bags"-- as we call them-- are then taken immediately to a covered dumpster which sits in a paved service area. We are finding that the replacement roses are often infected within the first year, often with the infection showing at the base of the plant. Whether this means the infection is coming from the roots or whether the area is just subject to swirling winds (downdrafts) we cannot be certain. Zoo staff are sick of purchasing replacements, so slowly but surely there are fewer and fewer roses in this garden. Now we have a 5 X 60 foot bed of lantana in front, and a 6 X 120 foot hedge of variegated holly where there used to be a hedge of red and pink KnockOuts. Two more island beds are slated for removal this year and I'm sick about it.

It is very sad. Every time I try to answer one of these I feel sick. Like the year that I lost the most roses to rrd. I tend to feel the same way about other peoples roses as I do my own. Rather fearful of making a mistake which I have done. Would almost never suggest taking out the entire plant. I have saved several of my roses of that I'm positive. In your little roses case it appeared that it may have been infected at the same time as your other rose. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to say this. In spring when pruning I do my best to watch each rose for any signs of unusual growth from previous season. When the rose start regrowing If rrd shows I completely remove the rose. During the season I remove any unusual growth as soon as I see it. If it comes back the rose is cut to the ground while bagging as I go. This is where I do it different than most. If there is the slightest I not positive about moment I don't dig it out yet. An example of why is the new growth that came up on my South Africa. It was that rrd red, super rubbery. long scrappy leaves, one to three sets of laterals coming from every nook. The only thing symptom that wasn't present was hyper thorny. So I cut it back and waited she grew back up healthy as can be. I'm a long way from being an expert on anything actually. But I figure that once the rose is completely cut down I have eliminated the mites (except for those which may have fallen off). I suspect that doesn't happen all that often. They are busy going about their business and I have never yet had it spread to a neighboring rose. If the rose was systemically infected it will come up sick and needs removed completely. I figure I'm safe in doing this or hope so because I'm on it like a mother bear protecting cubs. In other words I'm always keeping an eye on them.

Seil - Do you grow this rose? I have tried to find pictures / descriptions of its new growth but have been unsuccessful.

When a rose has not yet shown the obvious - witches broom, hyperthorny canes - it is difficult to get a definitive diagnosis. I have removed three ramblers (two definitely with RRD) and am keeping close tabs on two hybrid musks and another rambler. perhaps I am getting paranoid ...

Hi Michael - we must have cross-posted. I am sorry to hear you lost your MoP - I bought mine upon your recommendation! Truthfully, it is too modern-looking for my tastes, but I planned to have lots of cut flowers to give away.

I think extreme weather causes odd things to happen. It is 88 degrees here! Hot weather and RRD make me very unhappy!

Right now the quick heat has made lots of foliage redder than it has been in previous years. It should start transitioning to green with the cooler weather this weekend.

Some things beyond color you may want to check: leaf margins. Are the teeth regular or are they somewhat random? Are the stipules overgrown? is there any spiraling of the new growth as if one side of a stem is growing faster than the other?

Re axil breaks: two at one site don't bother me a lot, three or (much worse) more than three do bother me and make me watch them really closely.

86 here today: I expect to see sunburn on the new growth both leaves and canes.

Great picture by Dan, but it does vary. For example, RRD growth on multiflora and some garden varieties is green or yellowish green.

Michael's right.
The hyperthorniness doesn't always happen. The red and magenta colors aren't all that predictable esp at mid summer.
What Dan has shown is advanced and not the beginnings of an infection.

Which leads me to wonder if the underground roots supporting that stem have had comparable breaks at their axils on the root?

Maureen, I just got my replacement plant from RU, and I'm sorry to tell you that the new growth is pale tannish-russetish rather than red,

Is it hyperthorny? A different prickle pattern is an indicator.

Also it is most unusual for RRD to appear simultaneously all over an entire plant, esp. one which was healthy the previous season.

Michael- Thanks for the info. I am still not sure about mine as it's now turning green and loading itself with buds. I am still wondering if the weather led to any of these "symptoms"
