Tree Rose Question

Hi all,

I havent been here since last year and it's nice to be back. I have a question about a tree rose I just received from Jackson and Perkins. It is Our Lady of Guadalupe and it doesnt seem to be grafted! How can this be? I see no bud union on it. Are they making non-grafted tree roses now? I was a bit disappointed in it as it has 3 spindly canes on it. Not the thick ones I'm used to seeing. Any ideas?

Welcome back! Take a look where the three spindly canes come out of the trunk. That's where it's budded. Dr. Huey whips are rooted, then the tops are budded with the desired rose. While it's possible to develop quite a few large, vigorous roses into one piece trees, Our Lady isn't one of them. She just doesn't generate the thickness nor strength and length of wood required. Yours is budded, right where Our Lady comes out of the trunk. Kim

Tare, you probably knew this, but a tree rose will have to be tipped and buried for winter, or else potted and moved to shelter. The lowest temperature for exposed floribundas would likely be between 5 and 10 F.

Thanks everyone. I have other roses with underplantings that look great but these are soooo tall I thought they might look better in the ground. I thought I probably would need to stake these babies. So anxious to see them blooming. I have a couple baby blanket tree roses in the ground and they do great. Have had them for about 5 yrs now. Didn't do so well with two Lady of Guadalupe though in pots. Had a strange spring that year with temps up and down so kept bringing them in and out of the carport and they both finally died. grrr....hated that!! May I ask what you stake them with caldonbeck? Most tree roses are roses grafted onto a standard, so the graft is about 4' up in the air. The graft likely cannot survive freezing temps for any length of time without permanent damage. This is why they say to bury the tree rose or bring it inside. I have a tree rose in a container that I bring inside to a dark cold cellar in the fall (it goes dormant) and bring it out again in the spring. What is the specific name of the tree rose that you're thinking of? There is a tree rose that came out recently that is called 'Polar Joy'. It is not grafted, but a single rose trained to a standard. The rose itself is extremely hardy, and it can be planted in the ground and left there all winter. Unless you are able to purchase Polar Joy, plan on bringing your tree rose inside or buried for the winter.

Well, first, there were two yellow miniatures sold as Golden Sunblaze. If the tag has the code name on it (something like MEIcupag), it will let you know which of the two it might be. The first one sold under that name was Ralph Moore's Rise'n Shine. Meilland didn't have any minis of their own breeding when the miniature boom started, so they licensed other peoples' minis to be sold under their trade names. Once they had bred their own, they substituted them for the trade names. So, yours could be either rose. In Zone 5b, both will be quite a bit smaller than they will in warmer, longer seasons, but I would think either could grow to about an 18" X 18" head on top of the 24" trunk. Perhaps if they aren't pruned hard each year and don't suffer significant winter damage or die back, they may grow larger. Congratulations on your bargain! Kim

I'm in a cold climate, also looking to get some rose trees this year! I've never had them before, but I have overwintered roses for a couple of years in my attached, unheated garage though. If we plant them in the ground, we run the risk of the grafts (and there are two in a rose tree - the root, trunk, and top are all different varieties) failing. Some people plant and winter protect - depending on the varieties you might be able to do that. Someone else here posted their method for winter protecting trees - a cylinder of chicken wire filled with leaves. My plan is to leave them in pots (big pots) and overwinter them in the garage. To overwinter roses inside it's important to keep them cold but not much below freezing, to keep them dormant, keep it dark where they are (again, keep them dormant), and don't let them completely dry out. One cup of water or so every 3-4 weeks is what most of us do. Are you in zone 7? What varieties are you planning to get?

I looked closely, but I could not see any bud graft. I will look again tonight! Unless it's so smooth it has blended with the trunk? Yes, my rose trees are in pots so I can move them in winter..........

Can you post a picture of the graft area? I have to agree with Kim that it would be grafted. I have heard of people creating their own tree roses on own root plants by pruning them in some manner but it's rare and I've never heard of them being for sale.

I wouldn't worry about the three puny canes. OLoG is a pretty bushy plant and it should fill out nicely for you. Give it some time to mature.

I bought two this year for pots either side of a gate. They are from David Austin directly. They have grafted a long standard cane onto an established rootstock, then they have been budded at the top with 4 buds spread all round, from the top bud to the 4th is about 6" down the cane - each has sprouted 3 stems so there are 12 coming out of the various buds at the top. They are (relatively) newly budded, you can still see the flaps in the bark from the T buds. If yours are like that, you will see no gnarly union at the top, they look just like they are its own buds. I was very impressed with them, seen them with one maybe two buds usually not this many!! My only issue with them so far is that they don't seem to have disbudded the standard cane that well, there are a few buds swelling - easy to pinch out though. I think one bud with three shoots, like a normal grafted rose would look kind of uneven at first, presume they will come right after a while. The only thing with mine though was that they were bare roots collected from the nursery, I always wonder if they are a little less vicious with the pruning when they are collected. These just looked like nicely pruned roses!!

Yes, that's how mine looks. I looked closely again last night and cant see any bud graft. The branches look like they are coming directly out of the trunk! Weird. I dont have a way to post pics unfortunately. After checking some pics, OLOG's canes do look like that, so I guess it's what it's supposed to be. Will find out soon!
