Question about Rose Trees

This may be a dumb question - but do you plant rose trees in the ground or keep them potted? If you're in a colder climate and you keep them potted, what do you do with them in the winter? I have been looking at some tree roses and would love to get one or two, but I'm not sure what I would do with them in the winter if they have to stay potted.... Thank you!

I'm in a cold climate, also looking to get some rose trees this year! I've never had them before, but I have overwintered roses for a couple of years in my attached, unheated garage though.

If we plant them in the ground, we run the risk of the grafts (and there are two in a rose tree - the root, trunk, and top are all different varieties) failing. Some people plant and winter protect - depending on the varieties you might be able to do that. Someone else here posted their method for winter protecting trees - a cylinder of chicken wire filled with leaves.

My plan is to leave them in pots (big pots) and overwinter them in the garage. To overwinter roses inside it's important to keep them cold but not much below freezing, to keep them dormant, keep it dark where they are (again, keep them dormant), and don't let them completely dry out. One cup of water or so every 3-4 weeks is what most of us do.

Are you in zone 7? What varieties are you planning to get?

I have had tree roses a couple of times. It's tough. I kept mine in my shed over winter. They last two or three years but eventually fail. The most important graft is the top one and that's the hardest one to protect. I wrapped mine in burlap. You need to get the pot up off the concrete too. And make sure you water it every month all winter long!

You are a zone warmer than me, three, so you might have better luck.

Or you can leave the soil hilled up over the canes after planting and let Mom Nature wash it off. The new canes and leaveswill grow through the hill of soil. To protect the bud union during unexpected (in your area) bitter cold, plant the graft 2-4 inches below the soil surface then hill the soil over the canes above that. I'm one who advises planting as soon as you can work the soil. Your dormant rose will stay dormant in the cold ground until the sun warms the soil, promoting roots and leaf out. Better to store it there than potted in a garage. Even though it's cold, water it well. This settles the soil and prevents the canes from drying out. I soak mine in diluted fish emulsion, then pour it in the hole and on the bush when I plant. Although the wax is suppose to prevent the canes from losing moisture, it's often colored green to make the bush look fresh and blemish free. Either way it'll melt off in the sun as the weather warms. You'll probably have some dieback due to harvest damage. A grade 1 1/2 is suppose to have at least two canes 3/8 inch in diameter or larger. It can have more. Because you bought yours so early it sounds as if you may have gotten a pretty nice grade 1 1/2, depending on how the roots look. Most bagged roses I've ever got had roots no more than a couple of inches long. That's one reason it's a 1 1/2 grade and hidden in a bag.

Thanks for answering so quickly. I'm about to go out and get a few more roses planted. I want to get that island finished so I can get the pine bark down before we get much more hot and humid. Evert year I tell myself I'll have the pine barking done by March. Ha! The smoke sure is a killer though. If the wind shifts I'll have to quit. It doesn't look like they have the fires in Waldo under control yet, and sometimes we're getting smoke from that massive fire in Georgia. Yesterday I was outside working and about 5:00 p.m. the wind shifted slightly and it was like having volcanic ash in the air. By the time I picked up all my gardening stuff I had a horrible headache from it. We need rain!!!!

I can't think of anything that would get more black spot than Angel Face! If you can find it I'd recommend Love Song. It had very good health for me last season and bloomed it's head off!

Hi all thanks for the advice, I have had the tree for about 20 years, I had ten fruit tree altogether, gradually most of them have died mainly due to not having the time necessary to take care of them after I planted them.(Was young and gee, we have 5 acres we can plant stuff!!) The apple tree was supposed to be a dwarf, but I didn't keep up on the trimming and it got big. I try to garden organically so did not like to spray, went through the bouts of sticky traps, and even reluctantly tried "organic Horticultural spray". This is a burned look on the tips of all the branches it sort of looks like fire blight. But mainly, I have read of the close relationship between many fruit trees and roses and didn't know if this could infect the new roses.(Just planted 21!) ac91tz6 - I hadn't chosen a variety yet. I was just trying to think of the logistics of it. I don't have a garage. I do have a shed. It gets almost as cold in the shed as it does outside though. I'm not sure, maybe I'll buy one in the Spring and just give it a try.
