Tree rose questions

Hi,

I have a small rose garden which is doing quite well and have thought of adding a tree rose. I've seen people on TV talk about them. Here's what I don't get - if it is hardy to zone 4 (I am in zone 6) why do I have to bring it in in the winter? They also suggest tipping it on its side and covering it with mulch. Doesn't that mean it is not hardy to my zone?

How has everyone else fared with tree roses and what is the easiest way to handle it over winter? I'd rather not keep it in a pot during the summer, if possible.

Most tree roses are roses grafted onto a standard, so the graft is about 4' up in the air. The graft likely cannot survive freezing temps for any length of time without permanent damage. This is why they say to bury the tree rose or bring it inside. I have a tree rose in a container that I bring inside to a dark cold cellar in the fall (it goes dormant) and bring it out again in the spring.

What is the specific name of the tree rose that you're thinking of? There is a tree rose that came out recently that is called 'Polar Joy'. It is not grafted, but a single rose trained to a standard. The rose itself is extremely hardy, and it can be planted in the ground and left there all winter. Unless you are able to purchase Polar Joy, plan on bringing your tree rose inside or buried for the winter.

In your zone a pot would definitely be the easiest way. I have 3 in pots that I bring into my garage or shed. I used to have 4 but I lost one this past winter and I am zone 8. I usually start moving them in and out ass it starts to warm up and they start leafing out. The one I lost was a rescue from lowe's so it wasn't in the best shape anyway. The rest are doing fine.

THIS is 'Dr. Huey.' He is a very vigorous once-blooming rambler of impressive proportions. In his spring bloom, he will cover himself with an extraordinary mass of dark red flowers, centered by bright golden stamens. Not necessarily. You did not identify what "not growing well" means, how far apart they all are, how old and what type/variety of hydrangea and rhododendron you have so, there could be many other reasons. Just an example... consider sunlight: Rose of Sharon (RoS) may be in full sun; some hydrangeas/rhododendrons may not like the full sun growing conditions. But, I do hear you. I would not try to grow plants too close to RoS because the RoS may eventually encroach on them: RoS reproduces with new shoots coming up from the ground right next to itself so, if left unchecked, the plant can quickly get out of control in your garden. RoS can also reseed abundantly so, be ready to remove additional plants appearing in unwanted areas near or far away. A metal barrier in between them might minimize the underground roots problem. Pruning of the new shoots and deadheading of spent flowers can also help. There are seedless varieties of RoS out there like Orchid Satin.

I'm in a cold climate, also looking to get some rose trees this year! I've never had them before, but I have overwintered roses for a couple of years in my attached, unheated garage though. If we plant them in the ground, we run the risk of the grafts (and there are two in a rose tree - the root, trunk, and top are all different varieties) failing. Some people plant and winter protect - depending on the varieties you might be able to do that. Someone else here posted their method for winter protecting trees - a cylinder of chicken wire filled with leaves. My plan is to leave them in pots (big pots) and overwinter them in the garage. To overwinter roses inside it's important to keep them cold but not much below freezing, to keep them dormant, keep it dark where they are (again, keep them dormant), and don't let them completely dry out. One cup of water or so every 3-4 weeks is what most of us do. Are you in zone 7? What varieties are you planning to get?

It should be against the law to sell tree roses in cold growing zones due to the reasons mentioned above. In cold zones they are nothing more than an expensive annual unless you bring them into an unheated garage or shed for the winter.
I have Polar Joy which is suppose to be hardy to minus 30 degrees. I tried one in the ground and it died the first winter. The replacement was planted in a very large tree pot. I've had it for three years now. I keep it in an unheated greenhouse for the winter where temps at night get down to that of outdoors. I guess keeping it out of the drying winds is all that's necessary as I can think of no other reason it survives.
If you can't pot it and bring it into an unheated shed or garage for the winter, save your money.

Thank you for the explanations and good advice. I see what you mean about the graft being so high in the air. I never thought of it that way. I think I'll pass then. The garden I want it for is quite a distance (and a couple hills away) from where I would be able to store it. I'll just plant a regular rose and put up a free standing arbor or something. Thanks! :-)
