Troy Bilt Horse... Part help!

Hey All!

FIrst off I would like to say I'm new to this forum but am already seeing a wealth of information I can use and a thank you in advance for all that info! I did a search for this topic and came up negative.

I have an OLD Troy Bilt Horse I bought on Craigslist for next to nothing because it didn't run. It's motor needs some help which I am working on, but the current kick in the pants is the tines. The tine holders were taken off and I am missing the bolts and the half-moon pieces that held them on. Any ideas on what the proper bolt size is? I talked to someone in parts at MTD with no help. Since I have no serial number they pretty much tossed me by the wayside. They also said the bolts were no longer available and they couldn't tell me the size...

So aside from walking into a hardware store with my tiller I am wondering what the proper size bolt is for this aplication? My bolts bolt from the end of the tine holder onto the center of the shaft, and a half moon piece of metal keeps it from turning freely.

Any ideas to what is the right size would be helpful. Also any ideas on where I can find the half moon pieces?

Karl, for your serial number look near the right-side wheel; it's probably painted over. The serial number will be something like 803 92 4

My 1986 Horse tine attachments are secured with 5 3/4" long 1/2"-20 hex head bolts. The bolt goes through a 1/2" lock washer, then a 1 3/4" flat washer, then into the tine holder. If you've got a 1/2"-20 bolt around, try it in the threads to see if that's the right size, then check your local hardware store for the proper length. I have no idea what the half-moon things are; they're not on my '86 model, and don't show up in the parts catalog.

Key-woodruff is right name for halfmoon pieces. most shops has assortment box of these keys you have to take shaft with you find right one. this want help much but part number on key is 1104436

Thanks Bill. The problem is, I pulled off the air filter cover, and underneath is a silver sticker for the model and serial number, but the sticker is blank where the engine serial number should be. Not sure if there is an alternate location for the engine serial#? Can't believe it's this difficult dating a Troy-Bilt Horse built in the late '90s, especially with the serial number of the actual unit.

Thanks baymee, I have changed the fuel line and filter already and still had the same problem, so basically you're suggesting that I should check the gas caps vent to see if it's blocked up.... And yes I can make it about 60-80 feet before it shuts off and then crank it right back up and do the same distance over again. I'll check the cap and hopefully that will solve it. If anybody else has any suggestions or advice on what to try, I'd greatly appreciate it. Oh, and I know there is to be 2 rods on the back of the governor plate and 1 of them is missing, I looked at a 12HP similar to mine and it shows that I am missing a rod, I just don't know which one.

If it's like my 6hp Horse, there is a slotted nut with a roll pin driven through it, right where the hi/lo lever pivots. remove the pin and tighten the nut to the next notch and try it there.

Some of the earlier models had a stud w/ 1/2 threaded rod threaded on both ends. that threaded into the tine shaft ,and then the tine holder was placed over the tine shaft which lined up with a woodruff key ....so it's a botled tapered,keyed fit ,once on they very seldom fell off,parts should be available for this unit ,

Now is the time to make sure your tine shaft and seals are not weeping oil either .....it's easier to replace them now,then waiting until all repairs are done ,and you find the seals are no good....my 2 pennies,Jim
