Saw other posts about Mantis Tillers. I've had one for about 5 years. It's a piece of garbage. It tills the soil ok if you can get it to start. I've done everything right for maintenance with it but it doesn't matter. I take it to the lawn and garden shop for a tune up every year-it still won't start more than once. If you get it to start and use it a while-then shut it off and try to start it again forget it. I'm sorry I wasted my money on it.

Sandiegojc, sorry to hear of your bad experience with Mantis. Generally, they are reliable machines. If you have the 2-cycle engine (the one that requires you to mix oil into the gasoline), I suggest that you remove the muffler and scrape away all the build-up, then re-install the muffler. That build-up is a fairly common problem with 2-cycle engines, and clearing it away frequently fixes the problem.

My Electric mantis starts right up, don't smoke, and real quiet. Only have to take the tines off every now and then and clean-up the shafts. It has three speeds, but I hardly ever get it out of first gear. Has far more torque than those nasty gas models. Runs just fine off 100 foot extension cord.... I had real old two stroke model with the echo engine and I got tired of doing the same things you did. So I got ride of it on #raigs listers. had lots of calls and had no problem dumping it for the electric Jim Dandy....

I have never tried to repair a plastic gas tank, but I bought an old 1981 Troy Bilt that someone has tried repairing the tank with silicone and it is coming loose. I have no idea how long ago the repair was made but I will be trying to repair it in the future with something else. I have had pretty good luck using E600, Goo or maybe goop, I have also used a product called "through the roof". But none of these repairs have been made on a gas can. I often use some type of webbing like fiberglass or dental floss embedded in the glue. I have a plastic mirror mount on my pickup that was broken several years ago and it is still holding. The E6000 and goo or goop both can be found at walmart, the through the roof product I buy at ace hardware.

Had same issue found it was cheaper to replace carb found one on Amazon for $20-$25 wish I would have done this before trying to rebuild.

Could your fuel filter, found at the end of the tube in the fuel tank (that's where mine is) be clogged and need replacement? You could try pulling the hose out of the tank with some forceps or needlenose pliers, remove the filter, put the hose back into the tank, and pump the bulb to see if it draws fuel into the carb. If that works, contact Mantis for a new filter. Don't till without a filter cause you can get dirt in the tank and clog up the carb.

I got my 2 cycle Mantis in 1999 for $200 and I still use it regularly. I never empty the gas or do recommended maintenance and it continues to run fine. It takes a few times to start but once it's running, it stays running and then starts immediately if I turn it off for a while. I put in gas additive to prevent gumming. I replaced the gas primer pump that cracked and got new air filters and replaced the lost pins to hold the tines. The pull starter rope just broke and I replaced it with rope I had. The spring from the starting puller popped out and I bent it trying to wind it so I am buying a new one. I am sorry others have bad luck with theirs. I am grateful mine works this well, and am impressed with the strength of the tines.

I inherited a 2 stroke Mantis. It is about 10 years old and runs fine. It is great in my raised beds. I run it just like my old saw. Blip the throttle and run it wide open

2 cycle Mantis use the 21cc engine made famous by Echo. It has been the work horse for years in commercial environment. Reliability is beyond compare. If you have problem, chances are high that you don't know what you are doing. Particularly if you had it serviced many times.

When you cold start, prime the bulb 7 to 8 times, close the choke all the way, don't touch the throttle and just pull. When it starts, quickly open the choke all the way, don't even touch the throttle. You monkey with the throttle while trying to start it, the engine can get into a stubborn mode and you are going to have a hell of a time starting it. Just follow my instruction.
When you stop the engine and want to start again while it is hot, don't prime, don't throttle, just pull and it will start in one pull.

I forgot to mention, sometimes when you pull, it tries to start but stop. In this case, open the choke all the way and pull, it almost always starts on the next pull. Remember never touch the throttle throughout the whole process. You touch the throttle, that's when you get into big problem. The engine never start on the first or second pull, usually like 4 to 5 pulls, never beyond. The method I described in starting works for Honda, Echo, Maruyama, Shindaiwa that I have. I never have to alter from this all these years.

Remember, don't touch the throttle.
