Should I be worried about my Junipers?

I planted 5 Old Gold Junipers a month ago. I have been giving each of them a gallon of water a week and we are just into the freezing nights now. They are starting to look rather yellow on the tips and I wonder if this is normal for an evergreen transplanted in the fall? We have had no rain so possibly they need more water.

They are guaranteed for a year, but I sure don't want to start all over next year.

stop watering...

the worst thing that you can do .. is freeze the roots into an ice cube ....

do NOT water again.. unless your finger.. inserted to about 3 inches.. indicates that the soil is dry .... in my z5.. i suspect that might be mid may, next year ...

add mulch around the plant if you didn't prior.. and you can still find some in z4 ...

almost all the junipers turn color in fall and winter ... to some extent or another... i don't see why you should be concerned the old GOLD is turning yellow .. lol ... though i have no specific knowledge of that plant.. it sure sounds normal to me ....

with temps in the 30' to 50's by day .. and 20 to 40's at night.. you will have little color change other than that which is normal for this time of year .... your only threat is late next spring.. after thaw and spring showers leave... and the soil starts to dry in summer ... i would only be concerned with one color.. brown ... and you wont see that until the heat of summer, next year ...

watering is an art.. not a science .... one gallon per week means nothing ... you water when the soil needs water... and that is a function of water holding capacity... drainage.. rain... etc ... no guessing allowed.. insert finger ...

all that said ... junipers are pretty hard to kill .. presuming you started with healthy stock .... and presuming the most minor of care ... you will be beating them back with a stick in a year or two ...

have a good holiday... i am sure you have many other things that you need to worry about... i doubt the junipers should be high on the list ....

Old Gold (and other golden-toned) Junipers planted this late in the season will turn a bit gold at the edges.

They will also go somewhat golden next spring. That is part of their charm.

As Ken says, the color to beware of is brown. But, as he also said, Junipers are pretty tough.

I'd give the watering a rest. Junipers don't particularly like to be overwatered.

Overwatering probably wouldn't kill them, but it might slow down their growth substantially.

Mistletoe can definitely kill its host. This fact is reported on practically every article you'll find on the subject. Some trees do live for years with this parasite, but often suffer from loss of vigor and are more susceptible to drought, other pests, and disease. Pruning is usually the most effective way to control mistletoe and prevent its spread, but as Bboy points out, cutting out large or multiple branches can be counterproductive. In cases where the tree is heavily infested, tree removal (and replacement with a less susceptible species) may be the best option. Chemical control can sometimes help but is often ineffective at least in the long run. Getting rid of your neighbor's heavily infested tree could go a long way in preventing or reducing further spread if other trees in the area are not also infested. If you find a really good solution, please report back.

Should I be worried about roots in my sewer line?

I don't reccomend sceduled maintainance of sewer line,mechanical or chemical. Without doubt both work but only prolong the misery if indeed there are large roots. Chemicals are also envioromentaly irresponsible. I do have a suggestion that might save money and take maintainance off the table. Since you are digging up part of the line anyhow,get an estimate for "relining"the intire line from house to city. It's a proceecure where each end is dug up and a seamless linner pulled into place effectivly sealing the system.

They look great. Whatever you are doing, keep doing it. Maybe they are different species? There is at least one other very similar species but it stays a perfect globe--with time obesa gets taller than wide. Can't remember the species name, have seen it at shows.

I'm not familiar with Oakley climate- is it more bay or more-say- Concord like? They like all the heat they can get,but hate frosts at that size. Its already sending out growth,so what you should do is just wait a little longer and in April or May find a spot that gets all day sun,has good water drainage,and I would recommend mixing in some perlite with the soil you dig up- LIBERALLY- with perlite,maybe some compost ( mild) and if you can,a hot wall nearby will help. I wouldn't worry about the foliage- its just been roughed up going from wholesaler to Lowe's,to you,inside,outside,etc. They can be grown in large pots. But,in ground is what you really want..a tree you can pick real fruit from. Container growing is nice if you have ten different tree's..something like that. But one plant? Just remember my law- PROTECT FROM 32F FOR THE FIRST THREE YEARS. After that they can take a light frost or short 32 in stride.
