If you Google "mistletoe control" a bunch comes up. I wouldn't destroy the tree by cutting out large or multiple branches trying to remove the parasite, that would be counterproductive.

Mistletoe will not kill your tree. Cutting off all branches with mistletoe on it is overreacting.

Mistletoe can definitely kill its host. This fact is reported on practically every article you'll find on the subject. Some trees do live for years with this parasite, but often suffer from loss of vigor and are more susceptible to drought, other pests, and disease.

Pruning is usually the most effective way to control mistletoe and prevent its spread, but as Bboy points out, cutting out large or multiple branches can be counterproductive. In cases where the tree is heavily infested, tree removal (and replacement with a less susceptible species) may be the best option. Chemical control can sometimes help but is often ineffective at least in the long run. Getting rid of your neighbor's heavily infested tree could go a long way in preventing or reducing further spread if other trees in the area are not also infested. If you find a really good solution, please report back.

Spreads by berries do there has to be a source of berries nearby for your trees to become afflicted. Of course, if bird-dispersed "nearby" can be miles. But the point is having a tree next door of in the neighborhood loaded with it would indeed seem to greatly increase the potential for a chronic problem with your plantings.

We have Phoradendron flavescens. Naturalists know if American Mistletoe is abundant there is likely a healthy population of the beautiful Great Purple Hairstreak.
On the DelMarVa peninsula the favored host is Red Maple. For some reason some Red Maples seem to be favored over others. Mistletoe is often 50-60'in the air. Perhaps it cannot tolerate shade during the growing season.
Harvesting would have to be done with a rifle. At least here, little or no damage to the host is observed.
Rather than rush to eradicate this remarkable plant why not think about its unique life cycle. No part of the plant ever touches the ground. It is truly extra-terrestrial. Druids believed that if the European counterpart fell to earth it lost its powers.
I don't know where stash-hdy lives, but around here Mistletoe is not a problem.

Parts of California it is quite thick and ugly on oak trees.

Where I live Water Oak is notorious for being a mistletoe magnet. Several trees next door are infested with it and I'm starting to find little patches of it in my trees. It's odd how some trees are more susceptible than others, even within the same genus.

Mistletoe isn't an automatic death sentence, but it's not something you want on your tree if you have the choice. If my neighbor had a tree heavily infected with mistletoe and I didn't see any other sources in the vicinity, I'd be tempted to ask if the tree could be removed.

In Florida, where mistletoe is very common on the live oaks, I saw advertising all over the place for 'Mistletoe Removal' as though they could remove mistletoe selectively without cutting off an entire branch or cutting down the tree.
You might Google 'Mistletoe Removal in Florida' or something like that and see where it leads you - maybe somebody in your area knows the technique.

My guess is that the Florida mistletoe removal people, whose ads you saw, will either remove the limb at least a foot below where the mistletoe is located (hopefully using proper thinning cuts) or they don't know what they are doing and the mistletoe will grow back with a vengeance after they remove the mistletoe foliage. They might be able to remove the foliage and then cover the area to prevent light from reaching the area to keep the mistletoe from growing back, but I don't know how effective that would be and it would probably require them to make a return trip to remove the shields.
