Need a rose...lets make it an even 70!!

OK...My Hawkeye Belle has got to go. After 4 amazing years...the last 2 years have been disastrous. She got weaker instead of stronger. She is at a prized place in the yard so I want to select a great rose for this spot.

Here is what I already have, and I would prefer not to duplicate. Any Ideas??

Total Roses = 69 on .18 acres.

One more....needs to stay under 5 feet and have a good bush form since it will stand alone. Plenty of sun...especially Western/evening sun. I prefer good rebloom for this spot as well.

Hey, Ronda, I recently got Enchantress, a dark red Tea that is on the smaller side supposedly. I also like The Fawn which is small, healthy (even here) and blooms a lot with pretty medium pink flowers. I was going to say Sally Holmes, but then I saw your height requirement. Mine is new, still in a pot. I love the huge white single flowers in clusters, the yellow buds and the very clean leaves. Hamp just posted a photo of his on the Gallery - gorgeous!

Adding the planned front porch and moving the entrance to the right some will make a huge difference. Selecting a more inviting paint color/trim color will do wonders for the home. I would do everything possible to dress up the garage door. It is really the only focal point on the front of your home. Yardvaark(9A) had a great visual about extending you pavers over to the entryway. You could include a small bench with potted florals, a pot for the garden hose ect. up against the right side of the garage.

I agree, I've seen lots of '70s kitchens, and that doesn't look the part to me. Actually, though I'm pretty far from the decorator type (more the practical type), I think it's mostly pretty nice as is. The backsplash doesn't do anything for me, but it's not obnoxious either. That could go either way. I really like those cabinets a lot, and agree that some modest (not too bold) pulls would spruce them up. For goodness sake, don't paint them, you'll ruin them (IMO). Unlike (probably) most here, I don't object at all to your counters, though I can't tell how worn them might be. If they're in good shape, I'd leave them alone. I see nothing at all wrong with the refrigerator either. I just can't bring myself to replace one that works fine. When it quits working and the repair is too expensive, that's the time to regroup. I'm also not a fan of features like ice and water in the doors -- that's just more stuff to break. And spare us these bloody "smart" appliances. Ugh. I don't know about the windows. Where there are no close neighbors, I like them with no blinds or curtains at all. I love natural light and outdoor views. They make kitchen chores easier, IMO. Hmm, a skylight or two might be nice, or sun pipes. I like the light well enough, but suspect it's probably nowhere near adequate in terms of total lumens. I'd try to match it with a few more of similar style. Can lights are still popular, but I've never liked them where the ceilings are high. They're OK with low ceilings, where surface luminaires can make things feel too closed in. You need an annoyingly large number of them regardless. I'm a big fan of indirect (bounce off ceiling) light for its evenness. Pendants that cast some light upward are good things. I can't tell if there's enough room, maybe not, but you might consider supplemental LED or even high CRI T5 fluorescent strips atop the cabinets. Definitely put LED lights under the cabinets, if you don't already have them. I might change the flooring. That's ceramic tile, isn't it? Ceramic looks nice and lasts and lasts, but just about anything you drop on a ceramic tile floor breaks. I'd go for something a bit darker to anchor the room, but not too dark. Again, though, I'm not a decorator. I am frugal, though. I want anything I do to a house that isn't basic maintenance to return the investment -- or better -- in resale value.

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions! I read some amazing ideas! I am still not completely sure on the color I want, but my favorite ideas and things I will most likely consider and do is installing an iron railing by the entryway, replacing the light fixtures, removing the concrete basket, adding stone siding somewhere to the front, and painting the trim and maybe garage doors a different color than the house. I kind of like keeping the original garage doors, but wouldn't mind considering replacing them with modern doors. Adding larger windows around the entryway and above the garage is also a great idea, but that would probably cost us a fortune lol. Does anyone have an idea on where on the house to install stone siding? I really like that idea. Stone with cedar and metal railings would really create some depth and make the house look even more contemporary.

I used a combination of cloth and disposable diapers for my children, disposables when I was away from home so I didn't have to haul the smelly wet diapers around with me. That was in the 1980's. At that time disposable diapers had a lot of fragrance and my kids skin used to react to the perfume with nasty rashes resembling diaper rash. That was why I mostly used cloth with no plastic pants (except overnight). I changed them as soon as they were wet which meant a load of diapers to wash just about every day. No more rashes that way. Young mothers these days do not have to worry about fragrance in the disposables - that is no longer done. And some trendy stay-at-home mothers have gone back to cloth, much fancier cloth diapers than the ones I used to have. I do think that disposable diapers are an environmental nightmare in the landfill, but oh, the convenience!

I have Carefree Wonder. It was my first rose. She blooms just great, even with some afternoon shade.

Oh, you need a Jean Bach Sisley!!

Other thoughts on bloom machines would be Ulrich Brunner Fils, Gruss an Coburg, Marie Daly, and the medium sized teas Homere, Rubens and Marie d'Orleans (all those teas are on my own wish list).

How oh how do you not spray?!! Lucky. Even my Knockout will show some blackspot if I don't spray.

After having Hawkeye Belle there it makes me want something with a bit tighter center than Jean Bach Sisley has.

Odyssey....I just did a lot of research with others from my area as to what did well. I do have some spotting but nothing that defoliates can stay here. So far I have had luck with most roses. I did battle canker this year as we had so much cold and rain.

Other suggestions?

Alister Stella Grey, altho he can get rather large. Or Excellenz von Shubert. Glorious scent. On another noisette. How do you like Moulton. Ijust got it from Ashdown.

I'm only about 45 minutes from you and tried to no-spray with "no-spray roses" and had no rose garden. Just goes to show how thing can change in just a few miles! Mme. Alfred Carriere is the worst for BS for me and noisettes are
supposed to be SC originals. Go figure.

Bucks do seem to fit your bill--what about Aunt Honey?

The pro to Earth Song is that it has more frangrance than Country Dancer. Other than that....does anyone that has both think there is much difference? I would like a strongly fragrant rose for this spot if I can get it.

Moulton did not impress me in its first full year. Not nearly as bushy as Blush Noisette...but again, its early. I also dont detect a fragrance but know from my BN that fragrance comes in time with some noisettes. Mine is planted very close to Penelope and the blooms are almost identical, especially from a distance. I am not in love with this rose....yet. We will see....

Earth Song has more fragrance than Country Dancer, but it's not strongly fragrant. ES has a little more form, more interesting color (to me), better plant habit, a fast, heavy repeat, and ironclad resistance to spot diseases and canker. It can also be kept at 5 x 4, or bigger if you want. It's not the sexiest rose I grow, but the first one I'd replant if starting over.

I have to support a vote for The Fawn which I liked so much last year I bought another one. A GREAT little rose and you have to love those cheery pink blossoms.

A new one from last year that is also small but so gorgeous is Mevrouw Nathalie Naples. It was just wonderful last year with very good re bloom. Not quite as good as The Fawn but still good. If you're interested Ronda I'll find my pictures from last year of it.

Fist one that popped into my mind was the Buck, Prairie Harvest..tight center, good disease resistance and excellent fragrance. All in all, one great rose here.

Ronda, you don't list Perle d'Or or Madame Joseph Schwarz. Since Duchesse du Brabant does so well for you, I wondered if you'd like MJS. PdO has great bloom form, I think and I love it.

One that's not an antique that I'm really liking is France Info that I got from Roses Unlimited. Really smelly, disease resistant yellow rose from Delbard. It is really pretty. I really like Prairie Harvest too...
