Sacramento City Cemetery sale

I am curious who went to the Open Garden Sale yesterday and what you got. My very nice husband went down with his Mom who also grows roses and was there by about 9:15 a.m. I tried to prepare him for the madness but he said everyone at the sale was crazy! He declared that all rose growers are nuts after his experience at the sale. He would find a rose he liked and turn to his Mother to confer with her and when he turned around it would be gone of course:) I don't think I prepared him well enough for the experience of that event.

He found for me four roses that I know very little if anything about namely:

1. Perle D'or

2. Madame Plantier

3. Mevrouw Natalie Nypels

4. Lupe's Buttons

Did anyone else go?

Kate, I LOVE my Perle d' Or. It is one of the very first roses sold to me. I say that because I basically dumped myself at a rose vendor and said sell me some roses. I keep meaning to split mine, it is so huge.
I also grow Mevroux Nathalie Nypels, for my daughter's name. It seems like a disease resistant little beauty. I so wish I could have been there to go with you, like I need more roses. Am waiting on a Mdme. Plantier. Don't know anything about Lupe's Buttons. You did good Kate and kept your restraint up!

Thanks Carla! Just checking out the Jackson and Perkins sale online right now:) I'm so out of room it is just ridiculous but might buy from J&P for presents if possible.

Appreciate your feedback on those roses. I have my new rose bed almost ready now for planting and am just waiting for the weather to warm up.

It wouldn't be Gloire de Dijon because no one propagated that one (we don't have it in the cemetery or our own gardens), but no it was not a stupid suggestion. I thought it could possibly be Jacques Porcher, but I think the bloom is too full. Deron, could you get some more photos this year and include the foilage? It would be helpful to know if it the foilage is tea vs hybrid-tea like. Janelle

A wonderful day. We sold all of the roses, and a lot of t-shirts, aprons and other merchandise, too. The garden and weather cooperated. It was in the mid-seventies. The Teas and Chinas are at peak, and the banksiae are still looking good. We saw friends old and new - got to say hi to many of them. Fred Boutin came!!!! (Rose collector and botanist extraordinaire, whose roses are the foundation of our garden.) It was so nice to be able to ask questions about the roses in the collection, and to show him some new, intriguing treasures. Jolene Adams, soon to be American Rose Society President, was there. So were Gregg Lowery and Ron Robertson. We were so honored by their presence, but everybody who came, novice and expert alike, contributed to the happiness and success of the day. At least eight or ten members of this forum were there, many of whom helped out. We had volunteers from the Bay Area, southern Cal and Nevada. Things went very well because so many people helped out. I'm pooped. Went back to bed this morning and took a nap this afternoon, and probably will go to bed early. It was worth it, however! Anita

Each Open Garden is different, with a varying mix of friends, weather and blooms. We're moderately early in the bloom this year, so some of the banksiae and most teas should still be blooming, and the later flowers will be starting. Weather forecast is good - mid-seventies, partly cloudy, little chance of rain as of today, with no storms this week to knock things off supports or damage blooms. We've made some changes, probably most are subtle - new supports, new sign, roses planted along the front fence, other roses added or deleted, a lot of progress controlling weeds. We're even fixing some of the tumbled-down brickwork. The roses are in better shape than ever, I think, although some have problems. Last year was the last time Da Kernel was at our garden. We will miss him terribly. This year, other stalwart friends won't make it, but others will be here for the first time. We have some new, enthusiastic volunteers who have infused our garden with fresh energy. Gardeners get to enjoy the cycle of life in the garden, as the roses wake up in spring, grow to maturity or decline, and set hips and sleep in the winter - but we see the same cycle in the people who come to be part of it. We'll treasure everyone who comes, miss those who can't, and look forward to folks like Ann and Jeff and Sue and others coming another year. Anita

I was there yesterday and was one of the many at the tables waiting for 9:30 for the sale to begin..

This is what I came out with,

Barbaras Pasture Rose(the reason I went)-HP
E. Veyrat Hermanos-Tea
I gave up a Reve d'Or to a very nice Lady and she in turn gave me a Crepuscule.

It was such a nice day and a good crowd. Many huge mature roses in bloom.

Did anyone take more pictures? I would love to see the cemetary some day. I know they put in a lot of hard work.

Daun thanks for that great picture. I'm promising myself that next year I will be more with it by this point in springtime so I can go and get some pictures.

Bunches of us got photos. It might be easiest if we put them all up on the Cemetery's site. I'll look at that, when I get the rest of the way home.
Kate -- you got that gorgeous Lupe's Buttons? I AM SO GLAD!
It was sitting sort of in front of me, and I couldn't imagine anyone not snarfing it up.
I'm happy to hear you got a GramHat, too! We could have sold 20, if we'd had 'em.
Was your husband there for the opening? That was so much fun, with people lined up waiting for 9:30, and my husband monitoring his ever-accurate watch. --G--

I made the mistake of getting there at 10am rather than 9:30. No more Old Town Novato, dang. A couple of others I was interested in were also already gone. I did get the Baretta St. Bourbon I was hoping for--who knows, it may be one of the rare bourbons that do OK in my yard---Cramoisi Sup., and the Forest Ranch Pom Pom I coveted. Unfortunately the FRPP is a potted sucker and, after the long, hot car ride home, already looking a little queasy.
My fingers are crossed.

Colleen, keep FRPP out of that hot sun, and keep it cool with good moisture, and I bet it will be fine.
That heat WAS killer, wasn't it???

Hey Jeri.

So you had fun on Saturday? My husband brought me home the book/catalog from the day and I definitely recognized the Jeri Jennings design style as soon as he got it out:) I enjoyed reading it very much. Love the map.

Yes isn't Lupe's Buttons cool? My husband was there at the very beginning and awfully proud of himself for picking that one up particularly. I was a little worried once I started looking at the roses in that LB had a lot of yellow leaves, many aphids, a couple of leaves that had been woven together in some kind of a web, a budworm munching its way out of a big bud and some icky black beetles on it! God love my husband who just saw that it was loaded with buds and grabbed it! Now that I have had a few days to clean it up it seems much better.

The other roses are babies but I'm very hopeful. Next year I am going no matter what. The Grandmother's Hat was for my MIL. I can't wait to see how it does for her. I remember you talking about what a great rose it is sometime back.

Kate, I darned near roasted to death, but it was a wonderful whirlwind of a day, and I wouldn't have missed it.

So your husband was there for our Miniature Le Mans start?
We all had so much fun. The ONLY person I got to say "Hey" to was Dawn. But it was a wonderful crowd.
