Sacramento City Cemetery Open Garden Report

Before DH and I crash for the night, a brief report on Open Garden at the Historic Sacramento City Cemetery's rose garden.

The Cemetery's roses are on the early end of the top of the flush for a spectacular spring, which is to say that there was a ton of bloom everywhere, but the banksias are still blooming strong. Can't ask more than that.

We had a great crowd of garden visitors, and it was an appealing mix of experienced folks and first-timers which was great fun.

We had a great team at the sales table, and we sold EVERY SINGLE ROSE WE HAD.

I've never done that!!!

We learned, along the way, a LOT about agricultural inspection and quarrantines, and I can't say enough good things about THOSE folks.

It was a wonderful day.

Kudos to the garden volunteers. The garden was stunning yesterday, in the most perfect condition. The event was so well organized. Even the weather was as if on order. I love this garden and appreciate so much what has been accomplished here.

As Gregg Lowery of Vintage Gardens said at the Great Rosarians of the World Conference at the Huntington in January - the Sacramento's City Cemetery is one of the most beautiful rose gardens in the world.

We are so fortunate to have such a gem in California. Thanks to all of the volunteers.

Now, now Anita. One doesn't go at midnight to meet ghost in the Sacramento Cemetery. One goes at noon. Surely, you've met them? No? There are at least two according to my good friend who's accompanied me up there on several occasions. He was the one who pointed out to me that we had now met the same woman on each of our three visits, in precisely the same spot, dressed in precisely the same clothing, and that on each occasion she said the same thing upon surprising us: "I'm not a ghost." Of course, as my friend points out, that's exactly what she is. Then there's the lady, dressed in business attire, always the same business attire, who walks down the path under the Philips and Rix rose arch... but never emerges that very short distance on the other side... At least that what my friend says... I'm always too busy taking photos to pay attention to "supernatural" type stuff. MichaelAT

Sacramento City Cemetery Open Garden-Parking?

The main cemetery gate is at Broadway and 10th St. We prefer that people coming to the event not drive into the cemetery. If you are driving east on Broadway, there is a parking lot opposite the cemetery where you can park. You can also park along 10th St, or one of the side streets. There is also a Target parking lot just a little further east, at the corner of Broadway and Riverside. We plan to have someone at the gate directing traffic. Should not be a problem (easy for me to say, who will be there at 8 am setting up). The rose sale will begin at 930. My first tour will be at 10 - there will also be a tour on an electric cart at that time, for people who have trouble walking the paths, and a history-focused tour. Lots of activities, lots of roses, lots of rose lovers. Weather is supposed to be mid-80s and sunny - wear a hat, bring sunscreen, drink water! Anita

The rose garden is beautiful and full of blooms. Please come by and visit Saturday morning before it gets above 80 :). Free. No admission price; however donations gladly accepted.

Hi - I am the volunteer who is the curator of the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden. The roses are still there, although we have trimmed them much more than we did in early days of the garden in order to try to convince City staff that it's possible to achieve a balance between the monuments and roses. The danger of losing the supports and structures is still there, as is possible further direction to cut back or take out plants - but so far so good. Don't blame the city on any roses that have been removed from our garden to date - it's all been our doing. We have taken some out that were in the wrong place or that were not doing well. We've been propagating replacements and planted about 25 "new" (to us) roses and moved a few around. We are also working to propagate some more replacements, such as Jackie's Schmidt Buff Giant, which we took out because it developed disease. She gave us cuttings from her plant at home and we are hopeful that we can get a strong new one in the ground next fall. We have about a dozen talented, dedicated volunteers so things are going pretty well.

Speaking as one of the volunteers, I have to say that I think we had as much fun as the visitors. As someone said to me, "Rose people are really NICE people!"
It was a pleasure to help such pleasant and happy folks.

A wonderful day. We sold all of the roses, and a lot of t-shirts, aprons and other merchandise, too.

The garden and weather cooperated. It was in the mid-seventies. The Teas and Chinas are at peak, and the banksiae are still looking good. We saw friends old and new - got to say hi to many of them.

Fred Boutin came!!!! (Rose collector and botanist extraordinaire, whose roses are the foundation of our garden.) It was so nice to be able to ask questions about the roses in the collection, and to show him some new, intriguing treasures. Jolene Adams, soon to be American Rose Society President, was there. So were Gregg Lowery and Ron Robertson. We were so honored by their presence, but everybody who came, novice and expert alike, contributed to the happiness and success of the day.

At least eight or ten members of this forum were there, many of whom helped out. We had volunteers from the Bay Area, southern Cal and Nevada. Things went very well because so many people helped out.

I'm pooped. Went back to bed this morning and took a nap this afternoon, and probably will go to bed early. It was worth it, however!
