Francis Dubreuil blooming
Comments (29)Hi, maryhelen. Did you have a particular reason for thinking this might be an antique or DA rose? If it was newly purchased 30 years ago, it's probably more likely to be a hybrid tea - it does look modern to me, although I'm not an expert. If, on the other hand, it came from someone's garden, do you know approximately how long it had been growing there? Perhaps if you were to start a new thread and include some history and as much additional info as possible: detailed photos and descriptions of overall size, habit (upright, sprawling, climbing, etc.), stems/prickles, leaves, bud and fully-opened bloom, and description of scent if any - it would help to narrow things down a bit. There are a lot of red roses! The general 'Roses' forum may possibly be a better bet for ID'ing a modern rose, but there is quite a bit of a grey area between the 2 forums for the older HTs, etc., and quite a few people hop between the two. Good luck with your quest. Comtesse :¬)...See MoreMlle Franziska Kreuger and Francis Dubreuil
Comments (10)About pruning FD, you perhaps had better take it easy, even though it is an old HT as MichaelG says. I say this because my three year old plant has been slow to grow and because the pattern seems to be that it builds up over time. Mine finally put out a couple of canes last fall, bloomed on them this spring, and now has started to put out side shoots from those canes, thus filling in the plant. FD does have lovely color and fragrance, but I'm not convinced it's the best rose of its type around (though I can't put forward another, as I don't know the red fragrant HT types well). Of course, mine doesn't get pampered, to put it mildly. I want to try 'Oklahoma'. I do think that by the end of this year my 'Francis Dubreuil' may be quite a respectable rose. Comments (10)Well, out here, Francis (Barcelona, HT) had mildew problems. Baron Girod de l'Ain had mildew problems AND rusted. If you're going to try Barcelona, it can be a weakling on its own roots, but is reportedly pretty vigorous budded. I have been tempted to try see if Burlington Rose Nursery buds it. Comments (15)Thanks , Beth & Masha ! Masha , second picture is virused virdiflora variety 'Doll's Minuet' , which was originaly pink/pale red colour. Virus transormed it to this beautiful purple/red/white combo. Yes, true rembrandts can infect other tulips . 'Couleur Cardinal' is originaly solid red. Here is a picture of fully open virused parrot tulip. Before it became infected vith virus it was dull pink with green specks....See Morejackie_o
