My FD set a bud in January and it only just opened. It is a little bluer than average, but the fragrance is unbelievably strong! I put it in a little bud vase and it is still fragrant, after two days... I miss smelling my roses so much.

My Imposter gave me this bloom with more petals than it usually has.

Here it is blooming with some freesias.

My bridal wreath spirea is just beginning to bloom. Spring is here indeed!

Love your Francis Dubreuil - gosh what a lovely color. Wish I could smell it!! Is it an old rose smell?

Thanks, Jana, also for the photos of your absolutely stunning ramblers, wow! Beales also had Paul's Himalayan Musk, what a beauty! I wish it repeated though. Does Excelsea repeat? Thanks, George. I bribed customs - just kidding! Well, we now live in Cambridge, England, and so do our roses. So this was only a short trip for us to London. Transporting the potted roses, including the two climbers, with taxis and trains was however a bit tricky. At King's Cross train station I very nearly scratched a few people by inadvertantly waving around the lanky Sir Paul Smith. Entering MacDo there to change our little one's diapers proved to be another challenge. Imagine surprise howls at the doorstep - but at least our baby didn't get scratched ;-). Should we come back to the US, we will have to leave our roses behind and start from scratch - again. Cheers, Andrea

The concern I have is the rush to assume that a found red Tea may be FD, while there are other "lost" red Teas. If you do an advanced search on HMF for red Teas, you'll find quite a few whose scant descriptions and few illustrations could also be possibilities. For example..... http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.60704 Or, perhaps this one, which was actually sold in Australia: http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.60962 Also, trace 'Papa Gontier' back a few generations and you'll see some other lost red Teas. I think we may be biased toward finding the true versions of roses whose names have been misapplied to others because we want to correct these errors. But those aren't the only possibilities. I have to use rocks in my pots too. I put 1 1/2 or 2 inch rocks in a circle around the plant unless they are big pots and then I put more. The rocks aren't touching and you can wiggle a finger in to check if they need water. In a few of my nicer pots, I have used smooth, dark rocks that I got at the dollar store and you don't even notice them once the hostas leaf out. In the garden I sometimes put rocks or sticks about 2 inches out from the center of the hosta to keep the squirrels from ripping up the crown when they dig, especially with the minis. Squirrels could move it, but they are basically lazy and if there are other places to dig they won't bother it.

Another fun comparison: Left: RU, Distant Thunder, Own Root, I’ve had it about 1 month. This plant had the thinnest stems of the three, also had smaller root ball than the K&M. Very healthy, put out a lot of new growth Middle: Wayside, Molineaux, Bare Root, Dr Huey, also had it about a month. By far the thickest stems, but of course being bare root had to grow new feeder roots. Good progress, there’s even a bud. Right: K&M, Buxom Beauty ,Fortuniana, just arrived today. Thicker stems than the RU rose, also had a very dense rootball. Was trimmed short significantly to fit in packing box so most of the mature foliage is gone, but lots of new growth remains, even 2 buds. I’m very happy with all three providers, and thankful that I’m able to get hard-to-find varities in mid summer in great health!

FD is just breathtaking ! I also miss smelling my roses ,
but we are still under snow blanket here .
But as they always do , various narcissus and my beloved
old rembrandt tulips will comfort me till then .

Carol, to my nose FD usually has a spicy tea fragrance, but this bloom smelled very old rose-like. It feels so great to smell a rose again:-)!

Iris_gal, my bulbs are growing too, except for some tulips which didn't set any buds yet (or at all...). I have Byzantine gladiolus coming up everywhere, apparently they multiply quite enthusiastically. I planted Peruvian daffodils for the first time this year, I can't wait to see what the blooms look like. My crocus are doing great too. What bulbs do you have?

Henrik, any pictures of rembrandt tulips? I love tulips too but they are hard to grow here because of lack of chill.

Henrik, you have to hover your mouse over the picture on photobucket, and a menu will appear underneath it. The third option is HTML code. Copy it from photobucket and paste into the text of the GW message. When you click Preview of your GW message, you should see the picture there. Hope it helps

Masha, I was impressed by The Imposter at the Barona Casino rose garden last August. It looked very pretty and fresh in the blistering heat. That has to be one of my main criteria, how well they hold up in the summer heat.

Lovely pictures as always.

Thank you, Ingrid. As you say, the Imposter is a useful landscaping rose, always in bloom and cheerful. I bought two on impulse, and haven't regretted it yet:-).

OMG! You guys! Looks like spring is on it's way! The roses are lovely Masha. I like that extra-petalled IMPOSTER. Very cool!!!

And Henrik, those Rembrandts are wonderful! Tulips do "ok" here, but not great after the first season. They only come up all whimpy, or only leaves. Bummer. I'd love to have them look as good as yours.

Good job posting pictures, Henrik! Wonderful tulips. I love Insulinde. Do they introduce viruses to get striped tulips? I know they did it to camellias to get mottled colors. Is your second picture Parrot also?

Masha , second picture is virused virdiflora variety
'Doll's Minuet' , which was originaly pink/pale red
colour. Virus transormed it to this beautiful purple/red/white combo. Yes, true rembrandts can infect
other tulips . 'Couleur Cardinal' is originaly solid red.
Here is a picture of fully open virused parrot tulip.Before
it became infected vith virus it was dull pink with green specks.
