Baron Girod de l'Ain is the most winter hardy of them, and a bit more fuzzy when it comes to rootstock. I shall have to grow the both. I have planted the baron twice, both times he died before he had a chance to establish.
Well, out here, Francis (Barcelona, HT) had mildew problems.
Baron Girod de l'Ain had mildew problems AND rusted.
If you're going to try Barcelona, it can be a weakling on its own roots, but is reportedly pretty vigorous budded. I have been tempted to try see if Burlington Rose Nursery buds it.
Diseases aside, FD has stronger fragrance and reblooms better for me. The Baron has more unusual blooms and needs more attention to pruning/training. Mine is grafted on multiflora. I view my Baron more as a curiosity rose, but it is a keeper for me. Cant' choose one, sorry:-)
It's hard to argue against the experts, but here the Baron often has no frost damage after winter, and FD allways has. I don't know if that's the case every where. I wonder how long FD lives in zone 4b?
I am growing Barcelona on it's own roots and it is not vigorous. It was blackspot prone for me (growing in ground) and the beautiful, dark blooms are quickly cooked in TX sun. I love the fragrance and grow it in a large pot so I can move to a half sun location. I still wouldn't be without it.
My ownroot Barcelona has plenty of vigor--6' tall with lots of branching and nearly constant bloom. It is cane-hardy to 6 F (coldest we've had in recent years). It's true that flowers don't last in hot sun, but otherwise this has been an excellent rose for me..
