My Mlle. Krueger is young but she is staking her claim in real estate. I think she can get large, she's 3' wide already. My FD is not mature enough to tell yet.

In the ground for about 4 years, MFK is about 4-feet wide (at minimum). I have FD in pots, so I cannot be sure, but I got one for my housekeeper and she said it's "real wide, wider than you..." I have no idea how wide she thinks I am but probably wide.

Thanks. It sounds like she stays a bit more compact in size than some of the other teas.

LOL, Sandy, I assume you are referring to MFK or FD, and not my housekeeper. MFK is glorious in eary spring and fall and has the most wonderful colors, like a spectrum of tinies wrapped up into a global beauty of salmon. FD is generous Marlot which suffers sadly in hot afternoon sun. Thus I keep it on the east side for morning sun and afternoon shade. It retains its color and bloom much longer. (Grinning here!). The housekeeper is a wonderful color of latte, stately and holding her own without wrinkles with little care. I love her. She is my momma now that mine has departed.

Patricia, you are a delight! I'll be sure to plant Francis on the east side near a walkway (so I can smell his wonderful perfume). I'm assuming he stays smallish. Normally I plant my teas at least 7 feet apart. Do you think he can be planted on a 5 1/2 ft. center if the other bushes are smaller types also? I'm going to plant Devoniensis (bush, not climber) and see what it does. It's not doing much in a pot. I don't think it likes being in a pot. I thought it would be pretty next to Francis.

I need to wait until MFK blooms again to see where I should plant her.

I think 5 feet would be quite adequate for Francis.

Sandy, Francis is not a tea, but an old hybrid tea, and not particularly vigorous. It does have a spreading habit, but doesn't mind pruning.

Patricia, if you're pasty today, take a nip of chelated iron from the toolshed.

About pruning FD, you perhaps had better take it easy, even though it is an old HT as MichaelG says. I say this because my three year old plant has been slow to grow and because the pattern seems to be that it builds up over time. Mine finally put out a couple of canes last fall, bloomed on them this spring, and now has started to put out side shoots from those canes, thus filling in the plant. FD does have lovely color and fragrance, but I'm not convinced it's the best rose of its type around (though I can't put forward another, as I don't know the red fragrant HT types well). Of course, mine doesn't get pampered, to put it mildly. I want to try 'Oklahoma'. I do think that by the end of this year my 'Francis Dubreuil' may be quite a respectable rose.

I'm guessing Francis is a weak grower, though mine from Chamblees has taken off in its' pot. I may grow it in a pot for awhile and then get it grafted on fortuniana. We'll see. I do pamper most of my roses, so maybe that would make a difference. They get plenty of food and water, though I can be sporadic in my spray schedules. It's not a chore I enjoy. Usually I get more serious about spraying if we have a very rainy season. This year we NEED rain. Lots of wildfires.
