Homelite 955V1 2-Stroke Engine Running Problem

Hi, I recently acquired an old Homelite 955V1 2-Stroke (2 cycle) chainsaw which does not look like it has been used very much..

It had been unused for many years.

When I got it off the previous owner it was running OK.

I used it continuesly for approx 5 hours with no problems.

I then left it for 2 weeks and when I started it it stopped after about 20 seconds, and then would not run again.

I took the carburettor apart and cleaned it out and the diaphram etc all looked OK.

I replaced the fuel lines with new.

There is a good spark but it still will not run.

If I remove the spark plug and put some petrol in it will run for a few seconds but then stops.

When starting it this way the fuel line filled up with petrol.

If the crankshaht oil seals needed replacing would it still start by putting petrol in the plug hole ?

I have little experience of 2-strke engines so any ideas what could be wrong would be much appreciated.

Good Info/History! I feel we are still missing something, BUT WHAT?

1. When it starts from a prime does it run with good power, then as out of fuel vs compression or spark (slow vs instant)?
2. Have you checked your fuel X age/trash/moisture/Stuff and lines/filter X restrictions at connection/compressions/bends?
3. While in the carb, did you check the Carb's H&L Adjs X clear and small screen X restrictions (w/compressed air or carb cleaner?
4. Your info sounds like restriction or contamination due to it being sudden vs a bearing IMO (Opinions?)
5. Do you use stabilizer in your fuel or a dose of carb cleaner on a schedule?
6. Last, should have been first, what were the over-all conditions from extended sitting (tank/carb/lines)?

Good Fire/Fuel/Compression are the basics to running. Good Luck! loger

The problem with diaphrams? It's really hard to tell if they are any good unless you see hole in them. So of use can guest by looking at them and again it just guest? The diaphram is the fuel pump. Gives the initial squirt of fuel for the saw to rev. and unseats the needle against the seat for fuel flow in conjunction with the vacuum of the pistion going up and down pulls fuel up to and through the carb.

Other problem You said you cleaned the carb. But didn't eleborate on how and what you did. Under the diaphrams there are welch plugs this provided a path to clean the three main jets. IF the saw will idle and won't rev up sometimes the mid and full throttle main jet has become blocked with something dirt, gum,or whatever. Most of use don't miss with the welch plugs due to special tool for installation being it's just hammer seal conformed to the opening in the housing.

Mostly likely the main jet is clogged. you can try to spray can carb. cleaner in ALL the little holes when you have the carb. apart, but that don't garrantee it will clean the main jets passages. Again assume you have checked the filter in tank all fuel line aren't cracked and you have got all the air out of the fuel system?

When a retailer refuses to sell you a lawnmower, there is very likely good reason. They are, after all, in business to sell, and they don't make any money when they lose a sale. He must have had previous experience with this engine failing in the field, due to oil starvation. On the other hand, folks have been mowing there lawns with 4-stroke, splash lubricated gas engines since around 1910, and 100 years is enough time for the manufacturers to figure out how to build an engine that will tolerate a 20 degree slope. In your situation, I would ask around, and make an effort to see what other people are using on sloped ground. Regardless of what mower you choose, keeping the oil level on the "maximum" line will help prevent oil starvation.

I finally got around to working on this mower again and took the carb off and cleaned everything out with carb cleaner and blew compressed air through all of the jets and orifices and made sure everything was clear. I put it back together and ran it with the blade disengaged and it ran great for about 30 seconds. Then it idled down for a second before speeding up uncontrollably to the point that it sounded like it was gonna blow up. I quickly reduced the throttle and engaged the blade to slow the engine down. Then I went to test it out and like before, after running for a little bit with a load on the engine, it dies. It will run as long as you want with the blade engaged and stationary, but if you try to mow with it it dies after only about 30 seconds of mowing. I also noticed that when the blade is engaged the engine speed is fine, but if you disengage the blade, it revs way up. I noticed that if I turn it off when the engine starts to rev way up, then restart it right away, it will run fine again for about 30 seconds, then rev way up again. I can repeat as many times as I want. As long as I turn it off, it will run fine upon restart, even if I do it right away. Any ideas? This post was edited by jjw2112 on Sat, May 31, 14 at 21:15

I have been debating between the two for a long time. I came to conclusion that the Mantis has the same proven gear box for years where Honda is new. Also I am using it mainly for de-thatching. The video I post below show how good the Mantis work, I just want to play it safe. I just order the Mantis with Honda engine with de-thatcher and aerator tines. Mantis have promotion. $449 for tiller, they kick in the kick stand, edger, free shipping, one year refund. Just can't refuse this. I mainly use it for de-thatching. If you have doubt of how well this little thing work for dethatching, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU7kUDcOhiU I choose Mantis over Honda FG110 because of the promotion and also the gear reduction ratio. Mantis is 42:1 vs Honda 35:1. Higher gear ratio of Mantis meaning the tines turn slower and have better torque. For de-thatching, slower turning should be better for the grass so it won't damage the grass as much. Also higher gear ratio means it won't labor the engine as much. I choose the Honda engine because the Echo is rated only at 0.9hp where as the Honda is 1.1hp. 0.9hp for the Echo engine is published by Mantis. Honda GX25 is rated 1.1hp in many documentation. I hate mixing oil. I have HC151 hedge trimmer with the same Echo engine, it is loud and harder to start. I have the Honda HHT31S trimmer and the engine is so quiet, the sound of the trim head spinning is as loud as the motor. You almost can get away without ear plug.( don't even think about it). I'll post my experience after I use it. It should be here in a week.

Have you checked or replaced the fuel lines with good tightly sealed lines at the carb and tank? Thinking it could be pulling air once it gets good and hot, below a fuel line tank entry (that should leak fuel possibly) or swelling line or seat to starve the trimmer. I experienced this timing matter with a swollen seat in a mower's carb. I guess they swell more as a water faucet's washer while running. A new seat solved the obvious problem that was noticed with the carb and float inverted and the float w/n level. I would think this is possible due to gasohol but how would you test this w/o a float w/o guessing?? loger

Replacing the small int carb screen was a challenge but learn to leave them in the many piece kits as the welch plugs. I tried to pay to have one replaced and the Shop said they are too simple to install with the correct punch or pencilÃ¯Â¿Â½s eraser. I d/n find that to be true but with a punch I finally installed it close enough (the old one cleaned). Seeing that the mechanics under the screen was clean was my objective.

The opposite from another mechanic was, "you do not replace it". This is when you have to be the Judge from your experiences. Which leads me to cleaning vs removing/replacing. It looks simple but I c/n find the touch. loger
