Will commercial, bagged garden soil work for my garden?

I dug a new vegetable garden in a sloping area of my backyard, creating rows across the slope approximately 12" deep, 12" wide, 5' long, and approx. 12" apart. I did not research anything first, and I filled it with commercially available garden soil. Will this work for growing vegetables? I just started a compost bin, so I don't have any composting material just yet. I planted some onions, which are coming up, and I have not planted anything else as of yet...but I do have some tomato plants that need transplanting soon. (I live outside of San Diego, so other than the cold front that we are currently enduring, we typically have mild winters.)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I don't even mind going back and digging more if necessary, but I do wish I would have done my research first, as I would like to grow organically, but the garden soil I used was Miracle Grow, and it wasn't their organic line. :(

Thanks!!
