Early roses (photos)

Here are a couple roses that are early bloomers (for us), taken today. The Fortune's Double Yellow is about 20' tall, climbing a plum tree. When we moved here 3 years ago that tree was in the middle of a thicket so dense I didn't realize the tree (or rose) was even there until I noticed a rose blooming at the top when looking that direction from the house (about 300' away). Anyway, we cleared out most of that junk, and since then the rose has cascaded almost all the way around the plum tree, and is quite spectacular this year.

The other rose, Austrian Copper (R. foetida bicolor) was one I planted 2 years ago, it was grafted (could not find one that wasn't grafted), so i planted it quite deep, and last year it looked like it went onto its own roots and started growing much better.

OMG, Ron, that is a sight for sore eyes!!! What a magnificent monster! And the Austrian Copper is the dantiest, most charming thing. Thank you for the visual treat!

Ron, Thank you they are gorgeous. I always wanted to grow these two particular roses, but of course they are not suitable for my climate. FDY is too tender for our winters (I tried)and R. foetida bicolor is super BS prone here, as I understand. Never tried it myself, but always wanted.

'Pretty Jessica" is a really lovely rose, with a strong old-rose/damask scent. It starts small, and stays small...and because of that, it probably isn't great in an area with really cold winters, but here it seems fine, so far. I planted two bands of PJ straight into the ground last June, and they stayed there all winter, and while small, they are both putting out a great deal of new growth. ONE bloom in a vase perfumed an entire room of my house. If these two do well this summer, I'll probably get more. BTW...that photograph of 'Cressida' is swoon-making.

April Rose opened is first bud yesterday--our very first Camellia to bloom! We are 8 miles South of the Elizabeth Park Rose garden in Hartford. It was planted on the North side of a ranch house, where it gets quite a bit of light, though only a little bit of direct sun in the morning. We have a couple other plants, but none of them grew as well, most likely due insufficient light, which we worked on over the winter, by clearing brush and trees.

Do You Grow Lilies? -with Photos of Early Growth Patterns

Linda, I tend to plant lilies in the middle of stuff. Single lilies will tend to multiply, so they aren't alone for long. What works for me is to plant them among companions that will be tall when the early blooming lilies are finishing up just standing there being green stalks with skinny leaves. Mexican bush sage is my very fav, and Pineapple sage works well, too. Right now I have yellow lilies among blackeyed susans -- Salvia leucanthemum following the BSEs because they don't last until fall. Acidanthera among the S. leucanthemum for fall bloom doesn't show up yet, shorter than the others. These lilies are at the opposite end of the 'fence' of found wood that I made to support some lanky trumpet lilies that are not blooming yet. Not a stunning composition, but shows what can go together, lilies, daylilies and echinacea. They need some salvias or other companions to come on up and hide the lilies in late summer and fall. For next year, I'm planning darker pink with echinacea and orange lilies among gaillardia. Other companions, too, but that's it for right this minute. I'm thinking about candlestick plants (senna) to hide lily foliage; have to see how my candlesticks from seed turn out this year. Right now they're only a few inches tall. Nell

Thank you Seil - Aloha is one of my older roses. The bush is really spread out and loaded with blooms. My late husband surprised me with it about 11 years ago, the lady at the nursery recommended it and he knew I liked pink roses. Hopefully I'll get the posting pictures thing figured out soon.

Thank you for sharing pictures of these beautiful roses. Fortune's Double Yellow is one I have always contemplated but never pulled the trigger.

The Austrian foetida copper is amazingly beautiful. Whoever said it is right, "those dang Calfornians," are so lucky to be able to grow anything.

Olga, I know what you mean. When I lived in Texas, I wanted the Austrian copper, too, so I tried it, it barely survived summer and then died (I didn't know about planting it deep, perhaps it would have lived longer that way). Its first year here it was a BS-magnet, but last year for some reason it stayed totally clean, and it's been clean this year as well so far, with only the occasional Aerated Compost Tea spray (the roses in the fields get more Tea sprays).

Jenn, I'll post more photos from time to time as ours start blooming, right now, only the occasional rose is blooming, but it's getting close!

Patricia, I used to think the same thing before I moved here! It's true, we can grow an incredible variety of plants, especially up in Northern California, but we have our own pests to put up with, seems like more kinds of pests here than I had in Florida or Texas. But, going more seriously organic has helped a lot, even with the near mono-culture in the fields. If you have space (maybe a small tree to climb up in), I do recommend that FDY, it does as well your way as it does in the west, assuming you don't get crazy cold in winter (we go to 15Â°F & 20Â°F here, and it's unharmed, but I've noticed plants are more cold-hardy here, even in wet winters, which I attribute to the fact that generally, when winter hits here, it stays, not like Texas where it was 18Â° one day, and 70Â° the next). When are you going to come out here? So many places you ought to see!
