The second and third one were both labeled as "April Dawn" and I have read that there can be a lot of variation in the flower color. I don't know if it was labeled wrong at the nursery or if it's just one of the variations. Maybe next year if both plants have a lot of flowers I will see how they compare. This is only the second year for both and they only had a few blooms each.

With all due respect to your Dad, bush beans are not a cool weather crop. They are a summer crop. In your zone that would probably mean direct seeding in June. Planted too early - before the soil temps are at least 60 degrees - just leads to seed rot, not germination. And that 60 degree soil temp is the minimum required, 65-75 is listed as the ideal on all germination websites. yea wait ... first i think of soil compaction.. you simply standing and working in your beds.. i know OH has a lot of heavy clay.. and tromping around your beds early .... MIGHT lead to cement later in the summer ... next.. it would depend on how far you want to divide .. and the potential for heave.. as the ground goes in and out of thaw ... if you are simply halving a giant piece.. you can probably get away with it.. but if you were dividing down to single plants.. you might find them all above the surface in a few weeks ... i too am anxious to get out there.. but there is plenty to do .. cleaning up a lot of stuff.. before i spend too much time actually walking in the beds .. or making cement ... actually.. the first thing i had to do when i moved here with a 3 year old.. was build a sandbox.. so the kid would stop digging up everything i just planted .. lol ... make any sense?? you know.. what it really comes down to ... i dont trust mother nature ... she will mess with you gratuitously .. i still expect her to throw winter at me, with a vengeance .... it may not happen ... probably not ... but i trust her as far as i can throw her. .. ken ps: i though you were a guilt momma.. lol ... and i was wondering what you were guilty about.. lol ...

Agree with Peter. Window light isn't an effective light source for seedlings. Even a full blown greenhouse uses supplemental lighting for seedlings. Sunlight this time of year lacks the needed spectrum and degree of intensity needed and the windows reduce it even more. Plus there aren't enough hours of sunlight. So your plants start out with 1 strike against them. A simple fluorescent shop light 1.5-2" above the plants for 16 hours a day solves that problem. Check out the FAQs about lightening on the Growing from Seed forum here. Second, homemade seed starting mixes seldom work well. Not because of the lack of nutrients - young seedlings have all they need until after they develop a couple sets of true leaves - but because the drain poorly and the young roots rot. Buy a bag of commercial seed starting mix that are already pH balanced and made to drain well. Eliminate those two problems and your odds of success will improve greatly. Dave

I think you'll enjoy them. Actually one of the easiest shrubs to take care of for me and pretty rewarding too.

April Rose opened is first bud yesterday--our very first Camellia to bloom! We are 8 miles South of the Elizabeth Park Rose garden in Hartford. It was planted on the North side of a ranch house, where it gets quite a bit of light, though only a little bit of direct sun in the morning. We have a couple other plants, but none of them grew as well, most likely due insufficient light, which we worked on over the winter, by clearing brush and trees.

Early blooming seems to be throughout the east and south, also with folks in England.

Yes. They are pretty much finished now. The next showing will be my fall-blooming 'Snow Flurry'. It's not the best for flower form, and not too long lasting, but it's covered with literally hundreds of white blooms every fall (late Oct. - Dec. here) and very cold-hardy as well.

Very nice formal flowers! I have Snow Flurry and it is one of my favorites! I love the weeping habit. You are right, when it blooms it really is a "flurry" of flowers.
