Comments (13)I have been asked so many times over the years, "What is the BEST _____?" Fill in the blank with "thing-to-build?", "time-to-cut?", and so on. I would like to dispel the notion that the "BEST" matters much. The answer is often that there are several, or many, bests and usually quite a bit of leeway. There is no need to obsess about absolute perfection. Better to look for what works well. It would be as if someone said "What is the best clothing to wear?" and intended to wear only that for the rest of their life. So many different plants a yard can "wear" and many would look good. Also, with the walk material, there are choices in both brick, pavers and concrete that would work well. Personally, with your house, I would keep it traditional -- like red brick or pavers in the standard brick shape -- and avoid styles that look modern or fakishly rustic. Get samples large enough to create something that can be seen from a distance, and appraise it. Since I had to invent the foreground it's understandable that the walk might not work as shown. It's just to give ideas. One would adjust as reality demands. A note about trellises: If placed in front of a wall, one would provide enough separation so that there was space between the wall and the plant. That way, it's never a problem with the siding. Also, I've never seen a ready made trellis that was worth a flip. It's something that must be custom made, though it's generally not a difficult proposition for someone with modest carpentry talent. The large dome-shaped shrub near the wall could be many thing. I'm not sure if it grows in your zone, but while I drew it, the plant that came to mind was Viburnum carlesii ... producer of one of the most delicious scents known....See MoreMy dear brother brought me a load of gravel today ...
Comments (15)joyful, that's one good thing about the corn being picked--it's much safer to back out of the driveway now. susanjf_gw, we have great neighbors, and I'm sure they'd share if I asked for corn, or stalks for decoration, but it's field corn for their livestock, not good for 'roastneers'. schoolhouse, that's exactly right, but in reverse--today as I was passing one of the neighboring farms, I realized that it was gone. No house, no barns, no equipment--the land has been leveled and seeded. I'd noticed that someone was cleaning up the place, assumed it was the grandson of the owners, who could no longer care for the land. I'd heard that they'd moved out of state to live with their daughter. The old farmer was such a character and a fixture in the neighborhood. His other property, where he ran his cattle, joins our place, and I can't count the number of times we've chased the cattle out of our garden and yard. I'd call to let him know that they were out, and then help him chase them back through the fence. It's sad that he's gone, and so strange to realize that all traces of him and his wife are now gone from the land. Oh, the gravel pile is now gone, too--DD and SIL finished spreading it for me. :)...See MoreCreate walkways or pathways around my rose beds
Comments (11)One idea that comes to mind would be to model your ‘paths’ after the streets of Paris or Washington DC. That is, where the Roundabouts are you would place a stone in the center. You could even have stones that are not flat, just pleasing to the eye in shape and/or color, with a path around them. To stop the small stones from sinking you can first put down a layer of sand that you have mixed with cement. Just a little cement will go a long ways so don’t get carried away. After laying the sand mix down make sure you tamp and smooth it down real good. Place you small stones of top of the sand. The moisture over time will cause the sand to harden into a strong layer that will repel the stones from sinking. Around the trunks of the crape myrtles trees you could design stars, circles, etc with the small stones....See MoreNeed help landscaping around the front of my house
Comments (6)As the bed is quite tight to the house, shrubs will need to hang over the front of the wall in order to have room enough to develop a proper size. Hanging over will look fine, though. At the left corner, a groundcover or low trailing shrub could look nice. Below the windows the shrubs should be something easy to keep at 3' ht. The heavenly bamboo is not going to look nice below the window. It would be best if you find another location for it where it could grow to natural size. It would be better to have dome shaped shrubs below the windows. Seasonal color could go at either side of the stoop and whatever you have growing at the right side now could be used to fill in the leftover spaces....See Morelindac
