Some primrose questions

I have one variety of primrose happily established. This I have divided many times. This one is a very vigorous expander and its leaves persist all winter. They look tatty by spring but they are still alive. I assume this one is a Polyanthus. It was a division from someoneÂs garden so thatÂs all I know.

But often I have bought others in the spring and those have not lived. I donÂt know what the difference is. Visually they looked like my other one and were labeled Polyanthus.

I planted them near the older primroses since those seemed to be happy there. I wonder if some varieties are hardier than others. Is there a non-hardy Polyanthus? How can I tell?

Second question: I obtained some Drumstick primroses and Primula Japonica is a swap last year. I planted them in the same area, since I knew that worked, moist soil. The foliage died down last fall, not like my "old" primrose. When do the leaves for those emerge?
