English Primroses or Double Primroses

I am looking for horticultural information on double primroses like Dawn Ansell or Granny Graham. I believe they may also be called English primroses. I know some of the varieties are heirlooms. Does any one know where I can find out more about the history and horticultural background of these primroses? I already tried the American Primrose Society and they did not have a description of the doubles.

Hi Anne, Forest Farm Nursery has both of these and I'm sure would be happy to share with you cultural and any historical information that they have.

Hi Anne, I can't help you with the history of these English primroses, Primula vulgaris but here are a few descriptions,
April Rose...more a deep cherry pink, amost red double
Cream Petticoats...a mutation of petticoats creamy white double ruffled flowers.
Dawn Ansell...Ivory white with a touch of cream, also called Jack in the Pulpit
Granny Graham...a clear violet with a flush of blue double
Ken Dearman..a.tangerine orange with a touch of gold
Lillian Harvey...a clear rose pink double
Marie Crousse... a large flowered double lilac with a white picottee edge
Miss Indigo...a double royal purple/white edge
Petticoat...double ruffled white
Quakers Bonnet...pastel violet double
Red Giant...double red
Rosetta Red...rose red double
Roy Cope...red double
Sue Jervis...a soft shell pink double
Sunshine Susie...a double golden yellow with orange highlights
Val Horncastle a double with pastel sulphur yellow flowers
Two more that I know of, Sapphire and Evonne both bluish doubles

I'm not sure about seed-starting, there are lots of people who do though. I divide my primroses by just digging up the clump, eyeballing where the various rosettes come together and using a sharp trowel or knife to cut them apart from one another. Most rosettes will turn into a happy new plant pretty easily if you keep them well watered. I generally do this in the Fall, but we have nice wet winters that don't get too cold. It might be different timing in other zones.

I have white and yellow primroses. I got them from a friend about fifteen years ago. Being in zone 9 I don't get many hard frosts and I do get a lot of rain (July av. 1140mm- winter). My soil is acid - it grows rhododendrons and Japanese maples very easily. I mulch with mixed leaves and old cow manure plus compost each autumn. Mine tolerate a dappled light and some sun. What my friend did (and I do sometimes) was to break up her clumps and replant the fresh young growth - in a new location. I know this also works for Polyanthus. They last for longer when I do this, and the McMillan primiolas. I find this is more important for the coloured prims than for the white ones. Over summer the clumps can dry back to a very miserable 'rhizome' and look near death, but they start to recover in autumn after some steady rain, similar to the deciduous primulas. If yours have faded back it might be worth digging up a clump, splitting it, and potting up the rooted portions in anticipation of the autumn refreshment. Congratulations on keeping them going in such hard conditions.

Can anybody tell me if I can grow Sue Jervis in zone 4? Has anybody done the English doubles successfully in this zone?
