Antique Rose Emporium arrivals

While dealing with a disasterous shipment from Hortico (as we've been discussing in another thread and not Hortico's fault by any means), I also received another of my spring orders, this time from Antique Rose Emporium. The roses arrived beaifully packaged and healthy as always in their 3g containers. Their shipping may be higher than many other nurseries, but for the size of the plants, its well worth the additional cost. Take a look :)

Oh Tammy, I do love antique rose emporium and those babies are lovely. We had our local society spring pruning at the veterans memorial last weekend and while trimming back knockouts I was asking other old rose lovers what their favorites are in our area (Chattanooga) and smiths parish was one of them! Hope they all do well for you. :)

Lisa, I don't doubt that quite a bit of the fog is related you your illness, but I'll bet some of it is just normal. I find that if I try to hard to remember something, the neurons go on strike and refuse to fire, but if I can just relax and focus on something else for a bit, the neurons will sometimes put down their picket signs and go back to work somehow... I think a milk case/crate would be a good idea if you really want to get your babies planted. I'm assuming it isn't so hot yet that there will be heat stress + planting stress coming quickly after travel stress? I can't recall if you have hot summers, or fairly mild ones there... all the zone tells me is that your winters are not really winters... :>) Virginia

I always enjoy receiving shipments from ARE. Well packed boxes, good size plants. (My husband can tell when I've unboxed them on the front porch, as there are soil crumblies that get left behind. LOL) I especially like when they arrive with a bloom or two, but it seems like many times they have the foliage removed, which is fine. I think you'll like La Reine and Louise Odier!

It is like showing me two dresses and ask me which I like ? I like both and since I can't pick one most likely I will get both. Look at both the roses.. different styles, different cut ( bloom) , different colour and most likely different scent. SoFl, I feel as if I am getting into the same boat. I have room but it is matter of time that I will door be out of space. My husband is already asking me. 40 is not enough..Geezs, Jin. I want French roses, possibly a few Islanders, Antique ( mostly ) and also DA ( mostly ). Any perfumes made of roses like Nahema is on my want list. Then , I want big blooms which are big roses. I have a long , long lists lastly climbing roses which I also have a list. Trying to cut half my list by is not working :( Cori Ann, you are killing me too....your roses are beautiful. Gypsy Sue from Antique Rose Emporium

I bought Gypsy Sue last year and only had a few blooms. First two blooms last year completely balled from rain. She made it through winter with no problems, but I am in Central Texas where it does not go below 15F. She has arching growth, but does not appear to be a climber. I have her in a pot and I also grow some climbers in pots, and Gypsy Sue is not tall enough to be a climber. The arching growth flowers from every leaf joint like a pegged rose. First Spring flush was amazing! I need to see if I have photos. The flowers were full of petals, excellent form, self-cleaning, and the fragrance reminds me of Abraham Darby. Even handled rain just fine. She needs to be deadheaded or will produce hips from every flower. There was a small second flush where the flowers were not as full, but I also forgot to give her fertilizer. We just had a lot of rain (2.5" in 7 days) and humidity to the point that I refer to this weather as a Florida Simulator. Many of my roses have defoliated from blackspot, including Gypsy Sue, but she is putting out lots of new leaves like nothing ever happened. She is nearly thornless, too. I absolutely lover her! Edit: I rarely spray and am inconsistent with fertilizing, but she is still great. I bought her in the Fall, so I cannot comment on summer yet.

Wow, those are fine looking roses.
And that's a cute pug-butt :)

I'm hoping to get there this spring when the ramblers are blooming (May?). Haven't been in probably 15 yrs. Even then, the display gardens were gorgeous.

I'm glad they look so good. I had a shipment from them once that took a ride to the east coast by mistake and then it was found and sent to CA. They were all fine and they were so great about hunting them down when they were lost. I would buy from there any time. It costs me more in shipping but the plants are always very good.
