Lilyfinch, I got sweet Francis last year from them and she’s done well for me. She’s a good bloomer and pretty healthy in my no spray garden.

Yes she’s got moderate fragrance. Not super strong but certainly there.

@SoFL Rose z10 I got GS this year, and she immediately started to put out buds(just like your experience). The bloom are cup shaped, delicate looking. It's got a unique fragrance that I love. Thank you! I got her after seeing your pictures :)

I am in zone 6a and I ordered her. I must be crazy thinking she would like winters! How did she handle last year’s Texas snow storm (February…. I happened to be in Dallas the day it all went nuts!)

I ordered Sweet Francis for Spring, I wonder if I should have added Gypsy Sue, the photos are incredibly lovely . Usually photos can't begin to capture all the beauty, Gypsy Sue may have to wander into my garden.

The Rose Geek channel has a recent video showcasing her roses. She agrees Gypsy Sue is an Evelyn look alike.. Gypsy Sue is quite beautiful in the video, and at HMF there is a very good review.

That rose is one of the closest I have ever seen to fit the style of my little cottage garden . It evokes a calm feeling of peaceful beauty.

Antique Rose Emporium sent an email notification Gypsy Sue is back in stock. It is such a long hot trip across the US I don't think she would do well in shipping so I'll wait. Seeing those photos again reminded me how absolutely beautiful she is.

@berrypiez6b To make sure you get your GS, you should order now. ARE isn't shipping now, but they resume shipping this Fall, so you don't have to worry about the current heat wave. I've made Summer orders from them, then received them in September. I *think* they might even let you specify next Spring for shipping, but I'd check with them to make sure.

Mine is doing surpringly well in part shade. Growing tall, very little black spot, and strongly fragrant. I looked today and the new buds/blooms are pure white and smaller though? A completely different form also. So strange.

Funny thing about my Gypsy Sue

She grew wild and huge very fast. She quickly outgrew the pot I put her in and sent out these looong octopus canes. I gave her a hard prune at the end of the summer (we do that here to keep them in check, aka summer pruning) and she did NOT like that. She had some wonderful strong canes before but ever since I pruned her she only sent out spindly new growth (very spindly) and had no blooms for like a year.

Now this spring she started sending out more octopus canes with large numbers of buds at the end of each long cane (like 10-20buds/blooms). She no longer resembles anything like the rose in the pics I first posted with one big fat bloom per short stem. Im not sure what to do with her now. Im not crazy about her octopus canes but I’m afraid to cut her back. For now she’s staying all octy because I tell ya, she really did not like being cut back.

I may cut her back next winter when the cooler weather comes, but she seems to do most of her growing in the hottest part of the year so that may not work either. In the cooler months (temps in the 60s&70s) she didn’t do much at all and thats when my roses usually grow the most. So yeah, not sure what to do about Sue.

@berrypiez6b I’m not the greatest at identifying different fragrances but when i smelled her the first time I thought of Jude the Obscure who smells lemony to me. she has a bit more of a lighter, rosey smell also that sets her apart from Jude. It smells wonderful!

As for the white, I’m not sure if you can count on that? From what I’ve seen the blooms are mostly a pale apricot color that fades to cream. these new ones are almost pure white which is very different. I think they all originate from the same cane. I’ll keep an eye on this. 😋

LauraLG Z5b-NwPA Oh that does sound like a wonderful fragrance to match her looks. Thanks for the description. I had Jude many years ago, it smelled like a pink grapefruit, one of my best roses.

Gorgeous LauraLG, - I was just watching a RoseGeek video last night about her roses , which ones get black spot and which ones don't. If I remember right she said in the video out of quite a lot of roses, Gypsy Sue was really impressing her.

@berrypiez6b I’ll have to watch her video. Gypsy Sue has had just the tiniest bit of black spot for me, but she’s in part shade so I blame that. I also realized recently that it has very few thorns. it reminds me of Heritage who is sparsely thorned. I really love this rose!

I have had exactly two blooms on mine so far but it has been so hot this season any rose that produces a flower at all seems remarkable. She is pretty new, in full hot sun. I have put her in her next to Star of the Republic which is a favorite of mine but also not blooming at the moment. Gypsy Sue's first flower, produced when it was still cool, was graceful and peachy, a bit smaller than SotR, slightly pinker. The second flower produced recently, was pure white, also graceful, and lasted about 2 100 degree days before a clean petal drop. So far I don't love or hate it, but I do feel is is not doing badly for its conditions and hope it sticks around. If a pastel rose is going to turn white in heat (which mostly they do) I prefer a pure white to a dirty cream and I like a clean petal drop. Otherwise in wait and see mode.

starmade thanks for filling in more information, there is so little written about the ARE roses. I went out on a limb to buy Sweet Francis not knowing what to expect.. Star of the Republic has been a question in my mind too. Mr Shoup considers it the best of the Pioneer series.

I'm getting excited about these roses, it feels like we have found hidden treasure...

Gypsy Sue, sadly lost her to RRD after 1yr of planting..but in VA zone 7, bloomed right away and kept blooming so there was always a bloom on the plant which grows longish canes. The bloom looks exactly the same as th pic, reminds me of a smaller Evelyn rose. Bloom has a charm all of its own, very dainty, delicate fragrance.. I would love get her again but not until RRD pressure lessens off.

111plisa su What a heartbreak, that's terrible you lost your Gypsy Sue. I hope you have remaining roses that were not infected. Thanks for telling us about your Gypsy Sue's nature, she sounds like such a sweet rose.

My taste has changed so much through the years, the showy flamboyant roses don't interest me anymore as much as a tranquil garden where my eyes and heart can rest. My neighbor loved Evelyn before I took out all the grafted roses. I'll tell her about a more constant blooming substitute.

Gypsy Sue is such a gorgeous rose. I captured a split colored bloom today so I’m thinking that both the pure white and apricot colors are normal expectations? Perhaps the heat washes the color out? Regardless, she always looks and smells incredible.

Sweet Francis has a slender peach colored bud about to open, I'll write more about it as she develops so there will be a bit more knowledge out on another little known ARE rose.

Bumping this thread for an update. how are everyones Gypsy Sue roses this spring? What size are the blooms?

My Gypsy Sue hasn’t bloomed yet (we still have a few weeks before the spring flush) but she’s fully leafed out. She was tip hardy this year and is looking like a climber. I live this rose!

I bought Gypsy Sue last year and only had a few blooms. First two blooms last year completely balled from rain. She made it through winter with no problems, but I am in Central Texas where it does not go below 15F. She has arching growth, but does not appear to be a climber. I have her in a pot and I also grow some climbers in pots, and Gypsy Sue is not tall enough to be a climber. The arching growth flowers from every leaf joint like a pegged rose. First Spring flush was amazing! I need to see if I have photos. The flowers were full of petals, excellent form, self-cleaning, and the fragrance reminds me of Abraham Darby. Even handled rain just fine. She needs to be deadheaded or will produce hips from every flower. There was a small second flush where the flowers were not as full, but I also forgot to give her fertilizer. We just had a lot of rain (2.5" in 7 days) and humidity to the point that I refer to this weather as a Florida Simulator. Many of my roses have defoliated from blackspot, including Gypsy Sue, but she is putting out lots of new leaves like nothing ever happened. She is nearly thornless, too. I absolutely lover her!

Edit: I rarely spray and am inconsistent with fertilizing, but she is still great. I bought her in the Fall, so I cannot comment on summer yet.

I am also in Central Texas so that is great to hear. I also think its great it sets hips. Would love to learn more about hybridizing and maybe some day try it for myself as a backyard experimenter. Would love to see photos.
