Do you know of a biodegradable landscape fabric- type product?
Comments (24)I've been shopping around myself for biodegradable landscape fabric mainly for my container vegetable plants. Here's what I found at Lowes store: "Organic Garden Fabric" by Greenscape. This is 100% biodegradable & listed in the "Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI)." The Lowes website page link for this organic fabric: http://www.lowes.com/pd_376726-23132-208322_0_?productId=3606428&Ntt=weed+fabric&pl=1ätURL=%2Fpl__0_s%3FNtt%3Dweed%2Bfabric&facetInfo= I also like their "Burlap" roll (by Greenscape too). As an alternative to using a Capillary Watering Mat, I plan on trying this Burlap as a wicking or water mat to feed my container plants. The Burlap is also sold at Lowes store, here's the link below: http://www.lowes.com/pd_119195-23132-606120_0__?catalogId=10051&productId=3454566&UserSearch=burlap+roll&Ntt=burlap+roll&N=0amp;langId=-1&storeId=10151&rpp=24 Here's some information of what Burlap is --which is made from the Jute plant. Comments (3)I purchase my landscape fabric from Imperial Builders and Supply in Apopka, FL. They describe it under the Greenhouse Supplies and Equipment Catalog section. It is listed as ground cover. They give enough of a description so that you might find a close supplier if it would be to far to ship. The white fabric is used by some of the rose growers....See MoreDo I need landscape fabric under rock
Comments (7)Personally I would avoid that fabric completely. It will shred over time and you'll be dealing with lots of scraps of it hither and yon. That area is pretty flat. What I would do is solarize the soil.....wet the ground first, then lay down clear plastic, I use 2 mil thick, HD/Lowes/Ace sell it in a big box, like saran wrap. Mine is 10'wide x 100'. Lay 2x4's or bricks or something along the ends to hold it down. Leave in place for a good 2 months. You are coming up to the best time to do this as it works best with high temps. I'll post a link: Rodale Press: Organic Gardening Volume 60:3 - soil-solarization The only down side to soil solarization is it kills everything in the soil. A non-chemical destroyer of weeds and pests. From you 'after' pics, it does not look like you are planning to garden in that area so that may be okay. An alternative if you don't want to wait for the sun to do the work is, of course chemical application. We also have a complete gravel yard, quarter minus gravel, and before spreading the 12 tons of gravel to a depth of 3", I spayed Ground Clear [claims nothing will grow for one year, I've seen it at CostCo] on the entire yard except spots where I planned to plant something. It's worked great. iandy is right, eventually weeds will pop through, wind blown or bird drop, but that is manageable with a small spray bottle of Round-Up. HTH and GL with your vision....it looks very nice....See MoreUsing lots of landscape fabric to stop weeds …
Comments (0)I just bought a whole bunch of landscape fabric. I was so impressed with how well my garlic are progressing because of it. I’m going to duplicate what I did: basically dig up the ground with a shovel and rake in smooth with aged chicken manure, lots of it. Then later fabric over and pin it down. Then cut slits with a razor knife where I want to plant my pepper and other seedlings. I’m also going to spread aged chicken manure all around my citrus, peach and nectarine, grapes, and Keewee‘s, then lay a small chunk around the trunk. I’m hoping this will allow the manure to get absorbed overtime, and stop weeds, and preserve some moisture from evaporating. I’ll take it all off at the end of season to let it breathe. In my area weeds grow so aggressively that I won’t bother planting vegetables again if I can’t do this. Only concern I have is the mole infestation will be given some cover. However, they’re already damaging a lot and I can’t do anything about it so far, so makes no difference....See Morehosenemesis
