Are you sure that the spreaders are the named varieties? The usual menace is Lamiastrum galeobdolon.(Used to be Lamium galeobdolon).

Did you clip the plants back after flowering? That will tidy them up. They do need some maintenance to promote bushy growth and fresh foliage. Otherwise I'd just pull it from where you don't want it rather than eradicating it and throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I would plead for a reprieve until you've tried trimming and pulling. They really are good plants although not perhaps if you want a very buttoned up garden.

The silver leaves don't like a lot of sun so put those ones in shady, dry spots. I agree with flora that you should give them a reprieve and work on figuring out what maintenance they need for where they are and/or figure out a better spot for them. I use them in dry shade situations. They make a nice groundcover that doesn't choke out other plants.

This area is up against the northwest side of the house, in the rain shadow of the roof overhang. So it's dry, has poor soil, and is generally shady. Tough conditions that need tough plants. Lamium fits the bill nicely.

If you do need to remove it, I don't find it too hard to remove.

I too have found them invasive. I have planted many of the named varieties and lived to regret it. They sprawl and spread everywhere. I also found them appearing in gardens where they have never been planted, and assume that they also reseed.
I removed them by careful weeding. It is not as daunting or time consuming as it looks at first, but keep your eye on the patch. In my experience, they will continue to appear several years after removal, so be vigilant.
Lamiastrum also grows here, planted by a previous owner. It does not spread as much as the lamium, but I have not been able to eradicate it, either.
Curious how plants behave in different spots. My gardens are surrounded by forest, and I began to hate lamium once it decided to spread into the forest, smothering my trilliums and jack-in-the-pulpits. Vinca is also a menace, with similar growth patterns. I have been to forests where the only undergrowth remaining was vinca. Beautiful, but none of the native wildflowers or ferns survived and trees were unable to reseed themselves to perpetuate the forest.

I've never had an issue with lamium either - I have found it very easy to remove by either pulling or weeding out. I tend to use it mostly in dry shade areas where it is very well suited and perhaps that limits its aggressive qualities. It IS in the mint family so enthusiastic spreading should be expected. And it is not really recommended for a full sun location so perhaps that's why it is looking so straggly. I often shear them back in late winter to tidy up and remove any winter dieback.

Lamiastrum is another can of worms altogether. In fact, it is on our local noxious weeds list and IME is virtually impossible to eradicate completely.

yes they are named varietys..I have them in shade, semi shade and sun...they explode in sun but look very ratty in summer after the first flush.. some of the smaller daylilys look buried. In my shade locations they seem more controlled happily covering the bare ground under the hostas..the aurea does not seem to be a thug but the checkers is.

this past year with rain most of the summer, the many lamiums in my shade garden and part sun areas really did get ahead of me. However, I wouldn't be without this groundcover,rabbits don't touch it and I pull it out if it gets too thick.

What are your feelings on the Roots and Rhizomes catalog? Pictures look beautiful, but that's no guarantee. Mary

Possible? Gee, I think it's impossible to keep them alive!

I've planted some varieties for three to five years running and can't get them to grow. I finally gave up on them, sadly.

I am not a fan of lamium, either. Or sure, they're cute when just planted, but later in the season they turn into a ratty, sprawly mess - at least they did for me, anyway. Eh, at least they were easy to pull...

I find Purple Dragon to be a little aggressive but not horrible. I do have to keep it in check but its not hard. I also have Pink Nancy and it hardly does anything. I wish it were a little more aggressive.
